This is cute.
But the life-affirming, instant-classic pop gem it was being hyped as? Not exactly.
It's alright, and pleasant to listen to, but it hasn't really lodged in my brain nor do I feel particuarly inclined to play it a lot, which is bad news for a song that's supposed to be mega-catchy.
What bothers me the most is that there is NO progression from Kiss. It's like all they cared about was getting another Call Me Maybe and so they've delivered what sounds like a Kiss album track. This won't be a hit (Top 40 at most), I hope we just get the album and that there's good songs on there.

Really underwhelmed by this. I catch myself humming the "I really x1000 like you" part in my head occasionally but it's in more of an obnoxious, pitiful way and less in a good, "wow I love this song" way... I guess that's somewhat what they were going for?
That being said, I didn't have ultra-high expectations to start. The 'Kiss' album was actually disappointing to me as well. She just feels really... uninspired all of the time.
I'm probably saying what has already been said/what is obvious but nonetheless..

The chorus of this song has a similar structure to Avril Lavigne's "What the Hell," which is what I consider to be one of the most underrated pop songs of, well... ever. More songs should follow suit.

What I can't really (really...) understand is not the lack of support for Carly, because I think the uninspired and bland comments are valid, but the amount of people who almost seem to be rooting for her to fail. It's like they are determined to be skeptical of any move she makes and won't be satisfied until she fails and is labeled as a one hit wonder. People are even dismissing the little success "I Really Like You" has generated already as only due to an effective and aggressive promotional campaign. What if people actually like her??!
Call Me Maybe, Good Time, etc and all of Kiss are sweet, poppy, adorable songs. She is probably the most inoffensive pop star ever. She doesn't pull any of the stunts that everyone claims they hate that Lady Gaga and Nicki did, and she doesn't mouth off on twitter. There was that blow job tape, but I don't think that really offended anyone.
My point is: what has this poor sweet girl done to generate such feelings? Even outside of Pulse, my friends bag on me for liking her and generally anyone over the age of 14 considers her a joke.
I don't get it.

Video premieres Friday, according to PlayIGA - also features Vine stars King Bach and Randy Mancuso (whoever they might be). TV sync in promo for Bravo's Newlyweds beginning tomorrow. The Bravo partnership also covers the video premiere. Press release says it's launching on BravoTV.com's "Daily Dish" at 10:15PM ET this Friday.

I like this and I don't even find the "Reallys" all that annoying. Perhaps because I wasn't expecting to like it because it took me awhile to get into "Call Me Maybe". The chorus reminds me of another song. I just can't figure out which one. Was there a short leak/teaser to this song? Maybe I'm thinking of that???

So I dreaded listening to this because of the title and because of the fact that I'm a fan of her last record. I still don't know if I love all those reallys, but its definitely something memorable about this song that would help it stand out. I'm curious/excited to see how this pans out.

Anyway, a question: to those of you who say there's one too many repetitions of "really" in the chorus, what were you expecting the rhythm to be instead? Six of them makes sense to me because it keeps the eighth-note rhythm steady through the entire two bars ("x I / really / really / really | really / really / really / like you" lol), so I'm just sort of curious what you think the composition should be instead. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Lol, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought it fitted perfectly. Anyways this song is actually very solid. I can see it becoming a novelty hit, not to the level of CMM, but at least a top 10? CRJ is such a sweetie I would love her to get a nice string of hits from this album Era. She just needs the right producers (Max and Luke would be really safe bets). I've only listened to this once a few days ago, but I can still remember exactly how it goes. Which is rare for me based off one listen. The hook is effective. Same here, that hook as repetitive as it is, gets stuck in your brain just from the first listen.

The cringeworthy element of repeating "really's"....yea sure it's catchy and memorable, but it's seen as a joke. Sure it can be a "hit", but so can other embarrassing songs. It's not gonna make her an established, "I'm here to stay" artist.
But whatever, she'll make money and be more well off than I am so kudos to her. All it really takes is a big song or two to live comfortably for the rest of your life.
That being said, Kiss was great, and a great gym playlist, so I will be looking forward to her bubblegum album.

Tying it to Call Me Maybe is an essential part of marketing new Carly Rae Jepsen music. A lot of music bubble people believe "This Kiss" and "Tonight I'm Getting Over You" are really good songs, but the market wasn't interested then and certainly wouldn't be interested in a new song that was "about as good as This Kiss." The market was craving a new Call Me Maybe. If you're her manager/public cheerleader, that's how you have to position this song - as the next Call Me Maybe. And while I get your point about setting expectations too high, the Call Me Maybe comparison conditions people to see this as a big deal. Call Me Maybe was a pop culture event, and Scooter wants people to see this song in that same light. I see your point. However, if you are to go to a circus expecting to see a giant, untamed lion and you get...a cat in a fuzzy fake mane...you are going to feel duped, similarly to what people in this thread are feeling. That being said, this has been stuck in my head all day and this is a f**king jam and a half. Jam city. <3333 I don't see any point he made other than "music bubble people" have no clue wtf going on but yaaaay glad you like this!!! its perfection like cotton candy

The "it's kind of a joke" is my FAVORITE critique of this song. Clearly someone missed out on college frat boys lip synching to "Call Me Maybe" with pure glee.'

I don't see her as the kind of artist that will ever get to that "established" hit maker point. Because the kinds of songs that are going to potentially hit for her are going to be the more light and fluffy ones like this one. Just look at Call Me Maybe and Good Time's performances in comparison to Tonight I'm Getting Over You.

I totally see why people would be rooting for to fail and show disinterest. She's inoffensive like you mentioned, and lacks any identity. I understand people are here for her, but personally I don't see the appeal. If I want fresh new pop, I gravitate towards someone like Tove Lo who makes brilliant pop with a bit of an edge. Every description you've given of her is pretty much why she's not my thing in addition to me not being a 14 year old girl from Alpharetta, Georgia, Schaumburg, Illinois, or Carmel, Indiana.

I absolutely hate this. If Tonight I'm Getting Over You didn't do anything, I don't know if this will be the hit everyone is speculating.

I listened once, I don't care to again. It doesn't pack the punch that CMM had that made it into such a phenomenon. With some of the producers she has been linked to, I was hoping for a good record from her, but if this is the best they have to offer as a foretaste, I'm not sure I have much confidence in that.

He was establishing how Call Me Maybe was obviously a joke song. This will be too. My friends thought it was a kidz bop original song at first.

But why would you want to be seen as a "joke" artist, unless you're someone like Weird Al, which she clearly isn't?

But why would you want to be seen as a "joke" artist, unless you're someone like Weird Al, which she clearly isn't? Because it sells records? Carly is still a folksy, singer-songwriter type if you ever get the chance to see her live. You obviously are not in the "joke'. It's done in jest.

Haters gonna hate.
I don't get how anyone can miss her identity or point of view. You don't have to be dark af thematically like Tove Lo (love her) to have an identity. Listening to Carly's albums & EP chronologically, she very clearly has an identity. She also writes almost all of her music (I believe her debut was all her and all but 2 or 3 tracks of Kiss she had a cowrite on), which I think is worth mentioning for the uninitiated.
Anyways, this track is excellent no matter how big of a hit or flop it becomes.

I love how you just invented an opinion that goes against the general consensus and tried to write it off like that's the way everyone really thinks. This is no more embarrassing than 'I Kissed a Girl'.

This song is so infectious, I sing it all the time. Especially whenever I see a cute/hot guy irl or on tinder or in my dreams. Like seriously, the other day I woke up in the middle of the night and this started playing in my head.
I think this could become a substantial hit if they play their cards right.

It is a cute song. I don't know if people will bite, but it is cute. Not everyone has to be dark and edgy like Tove Lo.
