The way this has been promoted in social media is a first for a Lana single. I wouldn't be surprised if they aggressively push it to pop radio since this is the most radio-friendly song she has ever had.

Genuinely shocked but stoked this is number one. Is this her first American iTunes number one? Hope it gets pushed to radio ASAP although are there any rules or laws regarding the subject matter?? I wonder how much censorship if any will be involved. A very deserved moment for Lana.

Is this her first American iTunes number one? Nope. Ultraviolence also topped the iTunes chart.

I spent Thursday - Saturday getting high by the beach, on the beach, and around the beach. If only that song was available then (or if it was, I didn't know about it). #soundtracktomyvacation

Trying really hard not to judge this too much right now until I listen more, but it is far and away my least favorite lead single (or single period) of hers on an initial reaction. It's waaaaay too droning. I feel like you really might need to be high to like this one. Glad to see her at #1 on iTunes, but really sad it has to be with this song out of all of her amazing ones.

I don't hear anything radio friendly about it. That chorus is as far away from mainstream as it gets (and I'm not even talking about lyrically).

I agree with you but i think popbox made some valid points too.And on twitter some lame ass people are already calling Lana a drug addicted Anyway KIIS 102.7 L.A. is on board : I'm here for her first hit-single without being a remix.

Warming up to it a bit already, but I still don't hear anything radio friendly about it.
Anyways, thought I'd rank all her singles for the heck of it, and since I never have. Going by what wikipedia has as her singles:
1. Born to Die 2. Summertime Sadness 3. Blue Jeans 4. Black Beauty 5. West Coast 6. Ride 7. Young and Beautiful 8. Summertime Sadness (Cedric Gervais remix) 9. Ultraviolence 10. Video Games 11. Dark Paradise 12. Brooklyn Baby 13. Shades of Cool 14. National Anthem 15. Once Upon a Dream 16. Young and Beautiful (Cedric Gervais remix) 17. High By the Beach 18. Blue Velvet 19. Burning Desire
Damn that top ten was hard to rank.

It's not radio friendly at all, but compared to anything from ultra violence it stands a better shot at AirPlay

Blue Jeans and Dark Paradise are essentially her only songs aside from SS I think had real mainstream potential. Maybe Born to Die or Young and Beautiful as well, though those were a bit too orchestral for Top 40 I think.

Is this her first American iTunes number one? Nope. Ultraviolence also topped the iTunes chart. If you're talking about the album, yes. But as for songs, I believe West Coast may have also spent a hot second at #1 on iTunes, but don't quote me on that. That would be her only other iTunes #1.

#2 and dropping. Hopefully the video can help a bit and together with streaming they can make it have a nice debut, but I doubt its gonna be able to maintain it.

Is the video going to be her just getting high and blowing helicopters out of the air in Malibu? Cause I'm here for that.

...and I was here for that. It's such a nice welcome after most of the videos from the previous campaign, as great as they were in their own right.

Aside from 'Shades of Cool', the videos from the last era were total shit. I mean, that 'Ultraviolence' video is the worst thing she's put her name to, and that includes her old homemade videos.

She's full of shit for that video, but kind of like how The Fame Monster-era Gaga was, so I loved it in that regard. Could've done without the first two minutes of absolutely nothing, though.

Single sales have held up well for a Lana song. Disappointed this wasn't released on a Friday, considering its first week will likely be its peak (hope I'm wrong, of course).

Ooh, I love that. I hope the entire campaign has a beachy theme; I'd totally be here for that.

Yall that are hating on "High by the Beach" but praising anything from Ultraviolence need your ears checked. This is my favorite single of hers, though "Ride" and "Summertime Sadness" come close.

Anything paying tribute to my homeland would just solidify my obsession with her. Icing on the cake, at this point.

I initially got the Nantucket/Cape Cod vibes too but I think its actually still West Coast. That house in the music video is definitely off the PCH and the bus she is riding in the billboard promo shot is Starline Hollywood Tours.
