Mariah's quite easily, and that's not to discredit Whitney's release and its influence.
I consider Mariah's album to be an amalgamation of Whitney's debut and George Michael's Faith, but overall tighter (and especially tighter than Houston's) because her and Mottola had the hindsight on those two to take just the best parts and put them together.

I LOVE Saving All My Love For You, Greatest Love of All, and How Will I Know. I prefer them to any song on Mariah's debut.
However, aside from those three, Whitney's debut is a total snoozefest. I enjoy Mariah's whole album. So Mariah gets my vote.

Whitney, no contest. "Someday" is the only song from Mariah's first album that competes for me, and that doesn't stand up against a combo of "YGGL," "SAMLfY," "HWIK," "AaO," and "GLoA."

Mariah.
I regard Whitney as the greatest vocalist of all-time, but most of her material does absolutely nothing for me.
Mariah has the classics that hold up against other great Pop standards, the vocals, songwriting, and artistry.
She made a timeless album that shows just how important ALL aspects of artistry come together, and that's where Whitney always missed the mark for me.

Whitney. I love "Saving All My Love For You", "How Will I Know", "Greatest Love Of All" & "You Give Good Love" and really like "All At Once" & "Thinking About You". The rest of the album is nice too. With Mariah, the only song I love is "Vision Of Love". I'm not too fussed about the rest of the songs, although "Vanishing" & "All In Your Mind" have some really great vocals. Plus I much prefer the warmth and texture of Whitney's voice.

While Whitney Houston had standout tracks she also had way too much filler. Mariah's debut is probably imo one of the best debut albums from front to back. The standouts are obvious but the album tracks just had more artistry all the way out. I just felt her album more.

Whitney's albums were always a little heavy on the filler. Mariah's debut is one of her leanest. Most of that album could have been hit singles at that point in time.

I always said that and got flack for it from Whitney fans (even though i consider myself a fan) When I think of Whitney its always voice or a song unlike for exp Mariah or Janet where when i think of their big songs i always associate it with a album. Sure they had their filler albums but they also had multiple front to back strong albums where to me Whitney was never about that.

I think overall Whitney has had the finer vocal moments over Mariah. I think overall Mariah has had the consistently better material over Whitney. If I had to put on a debut album. It would be Mariah's. Whitney has never been about her albums for me. She has had her song or vocal moment here and there, but I have never wanted to listen to her albums again after the first listen. It has always been about a song here and there.

Whitney's has some great ones on it, and was very influential, but I agree about the filler. I enjoy every track on the Mariah album.

Mariah Carey, no contest. Better material and I prefer her voice, by far, as well.

Whitney's debut has a few great songs, but Mariah's debut is a much stronger album and gets my vote. When you have 4 #1s and then still have album tracks on the level of "Vanishing" and "Alone In Love," you know you are dealing with a strong release.

Overall I think they are both clearly pretty dated, but I think Mariah's is a more solid album as a whole. I agree that Whitney's album had some great moments, but also it's about half filler.
