My understanding is that the Hot Country Songs chart (as well as other genre charts) are just a subset of the Hot 100 for that genre; the songs and their rankings come directly from the Hot 100. I noticed however that for the Dec. 27 chart, on the Hot 100, "Something in the Water" by Carrie Underwood is at #38 while "Shotgun Rider" by Tim McGraw is at #39. Over on the Country Songs chart though, McGraw is at #1 while Underwood is at #2.
Anyone know what is going on here? It is a goof?

A subset of the Hot 100, sort of.
Shotgun Rider is getting more country airplay than Something In The Water, that might be the difference.

Billboard has a strange policy in those kind of thing. Besides, the airplay for the sub-genre chart also include airplay from like, Pop, as well. Cruise say hello.

My understanding is that it's not always a direct copy of the order from the Hot 100 to the Hot Country Songs chart.

I think Billboard messed up the country chart because Carrie and Tim was so close. But they didn't bother to revise it or answer questions coming from fans.
The good thing is Carrie will likely top the country chart again next week.

Oh, ye of little faith...literally! Indeed, Billboard only uses Country airplay for Hot Country, and there's one more component to Something in the Water: Christian airplay. The song has topped Hot Christian songs for 12 straight weeks, however it is an easy chart to top (since there were no other songs that were even on the Hot 100 until The Old Rugged Cross debuted last week), so it doesn't drop too much in Hot Country points; just enough that in a 1 position difference on the Hot 100, the tables can turn on Country.

I'm pretty sure Hot Country Songs is sales, airplay from all formats and streaming.
It wouldn't be too shocking if Billboard goofed, especially if these two songs were ranking back to back.

I believe it's a goof, but remit may be onto something regarding the Christian airplay element.

I'd say it's a glitch. SITW is not listed on any Christian Airplay Chart. The threshold is 0.3M listener's impressions for the #30 Christian AC airplay. So this cannot be the explanation. I assume that the The Hot Christian #1 is from digital sales and streaming points. If both Carrie and Tim get crossover points on the Hot 100 then it is from the Mainstream Top 40 airplay. Still believe Billboard made a mistake which happens about twice a year. Last time it happened with Lady A's "Compass". Due to extremely tight dead lines the charts are not double checked and when a major mistake happens not corrected; unless the Billboard 200 is wrong. On all charts throughout the year the Hot Country ranking was spot on with the Hot 100 including the Bubbling Under.
Edit: Have sent them an e-mail asking for this to be explained. They usually answer pretty fast.

This kinda thing happened before on Hot Dance / Electronic Songs this year:
#Selfie, Turn Down for What, and Hey Brother were out of order versus on the Hot 100. May happen a lot; Haven't kept track of everything.
... and let's not forget my personal favorite: Tove Lo's "Habits" is #1 on Hot Rock Songs one week, gone the next! (Different circumstances, but still... yeesh..)

Thanks everyone for the comments, and thanks especially to trebor for sending the email to Billboard. Please keep us posted if you get a reply.
Unless things have changed, when the hybrid charts were rolled out in the fall of 2012, the single stupidest thing was the fact that they included ALL radio plays on the genre charts, not just on the stations that play that genre. The end result is that the order for the hybrid charts should be identical to the Hot 100 order. I don't agree with it, but that's the way it was.

This is Billboard just screwing up for the Country chart. Billboard changing the country chart (and other airplay charts) to mirror the Hot 100 has been the biggest mistake Billboard has made in the last 10-15 years I'd say, maybe ever. It rips the history of their own charts up into three eras now (pre-Soundcan, Soundscan, Hot 100) and really contributes to a stale chart. It's really frustrating.

My request was relayed to Wade Jessen and I do not wish to hassle the chief of charts... His staff usually answers all questions pretty swiftly; obviously this is a "hot potato". Still pretty sure that this was a mistake and the lead changed late in post-production and was not corrected in the genre chart. Happens every so often...

the combined hot 100 chart predated sound scan's inception by nearly 33 years debuting in the summer of 1958
