Haven't heard this yet but love reading about the success of the song after one day of it's release. ZBB is the most underrated band on this message board. I would easily put them as a high end A lister. Looking forward to hearing this and the new album.

Song is now in the top 10 All Genre on iTunes. Not bad at all so far, especially since their audience is probably a little bit older than Luke Bryan's or FGL's.

I like this, upon first couple of listens. But that's not surprising to me, since I like most of what they put out. This should hopefully be another big hit for them.

I like this a lot and can definitely see it doing better at radio than their last two singles.
Although unimaginative in the lyrics department it is right in their ballpark-smooth grooving easy listening song with nice harmonies.

This sounds a little different for them, but I like this a lot! I hope this brings them back to the top of the country charts!

Thanks for the information, jhomes87! I hadn't realized that Zac Brown Band was still on their own for radio promo. This brings back the question of how much longer the band will stay relevant, though. "All Alright" was an under-performer on the charts due to reasons other than a weak promo team in my opinion, but I did notice that even before that single ZBB's momentum at radio seemed to be waning. "Sweet Annie" was off to a slow-leaning, steady chart run until Zac Brown attracted some media attention by insulting Luke Bryan's music and "Sweet Annie" did manage to have a 25-week run to #1, but overall I sensed the band's radio momentum with their last album wasn't nearly as strong as the A-list momentum they had before Uncaged. This may be partially because Zac Brown wanted to try some different styles such as he did with "The Wind" and I do remember reading Zac Brown voicing that he didn't care as much about radio success when recording material for his last album, so I guess we'll see how the group's radio career continues into their fourth era. I actually think their new partnerships with BMLG and John Varvatos will be a huge boost to these guys, not that I think they really needed it or anything. I'm not worried about their radio promo--the Southern Ground team pretty much only has to worry about promoting ZBB songs right now, but just having BMLG in their corner is big, too. Plus, this song is really, really good and I think it will be a big hit for them, likely a #1. It's still at #8 all-genre on iTunes. Zac Brown Band has a huge following. They've built themselves into a household name and have a lot of fans outside of the country genre too. Their sound, their tours...it's unlike anybody else on country radio. They're country, and yet they're a blend of all kinds of styles/genres. You just can't put these guys into a box. Their rise from an unknown band to a superstar act is so unique and truly incredible. I actually don't think this is anything like "Chicken Fried" at all (and thank goodness). Zac has acknowledged that they really only went with CF because they knew it was the type of song that radio would like, and it was the kind of song that was basically pandering to the masses. They needed a hit song to get their foot in the door, and "Chicken Fried" was it. But every song since then has been more unique, in my opinion. Anyway, "Homegrown" is definitely one of my all-time favorite ZBB singles, right up there with "Goodbye In Her Eyes", "The Wind", "Colder Weather", and "As She's Walking Away".

One word: refreshing! This tune has such a laid back and soothing vibe, with silky smooth harmonies. Songs like "Homegrown" remind me why these guys are one of my favorite groups. Simple lyrics, but just a really pure sound compared to everything else on the radio today. It's catchy, breezy, and I'm expecting it to become a huge #1 hit!

This isn't bad, but I actually wish ZBB would get back to their acoustic Country style, instead of this Rock infused, cluttered sound.
ZBB used to stand out with their unique blend of influences, but their last few singles have me wondering if they're intentionally trying to shed that sound.
More Highway 20 Ride & Colder Weather and less of this, please.

I am not a ZBB fan by any stretch of the imagination (I average liking one single per era, maybe) but I really enjoyed this on first listen.

I'm sure that working with Dave Grohl has influenced or will influence ZBB's sound a bit, but "Homegrown" was actually co-produced by Zac Brown and Jay Joyce. Zac was interviewed earlier this week by Rolling Stone and he talked a bit about the song as well as the upcoming album. Rolling Stone article

Jay Joyce is the best producer in town so it makes a lot of sense to use him here.

Nice move on the mongrel chart: #41 to #4. The #1 digital song with 75,000 downloads.

This has all the makings of a #1 hit right now, and is guaranteed Gold status. With such a strong start sales wise, i could see it getting to Platinum if it doesn't drop off too much

I heard this for the first time on the radio while driving to class today and this will definitely be a big hit for them. It's just one of those songs that sounds best driving and the song came through great on the speakers. I'm loving the Jay Joyce influence on the production and Zac sounds good as ever.

After their debut at #23, where does the Zac Brown Band go from there?

This is alright. I'm not crazy about the production to this though; it's a little too loud and generic sounding to me. I was hoping for something more organic sounding considering the title and the song itself (vocally and lyrically, etc.) sounds like it would lend itself to that sound better than this, too. The harmonies in this remind me of Alabama, and that's probably the strongest aspect of this song.

After their debut at #23, where does the Zac Brown Band go from there? I'm thinking they might be able to move up to #19. Like I said in the Thousand Horses thread, Brad and Tim will go recurrent, and I think David Nail will finally leave as well. That's a +3 right there, and I predict that the ZBB can pass Kristian Bush as well, for a +4 gain and a move up to #19. "Homegrown" has had a pretty good week, all things considered. It had the big negative early in the week, but by tomorrow morning it will have more than broken even with where it started the week at (it had 12.133 million on Monday's MB update), and it should have a really strong Monday morning update too, bolstered especially by its debut on both the Kix and Bob countdown shows.

As someone who very rarely enjoys a ZBB song (maybe one song per album, if that), I really like this one. I hope their next album is more like this sound opposed to what their last few albums have been like.

As someone who very rarely enjoys a ZBB song (maybe one song per album, if that), I really like this one. I hope their next album is more like this sound opposed to what their last few albums have been like. From everything they've said, and from comments from Scott Borchetta and John Varvatos (among others), I think the album is going to be pretty diverse. Anyway, I've had "Homegrown" on repeat a lot this week. The guitar riffs at the beginning and between the verses are incredible. I also love the plucky banjo underneath the lyric "it's so good to be takin' it easy", and then the harmonies on the next line "why would I ever leave?" are really good (and the harmonies throughout the chorus are great as well). Also, I love the clapping sounds in different parts, and the organ too. After their debut at #23, where does the Zac Brown Band go from there? I'm thinking they might be able to move up to #19. Like I said in the Thousand Horses thread, Brad and Tim will go recurrent, and I think David Nail will finally leave as well. That's a +3 right there, and I predict that the ZBB can pass Kristian Bush as well, for a +4 gain and a move up to #19.Scratch this last prediction I made earlier today. I do still think that they'll pass Kristian and gain 3 spots from recurrents (Tim, Brad, David), but Sam Hunt will probably re-pass them (at least for now), so right now it's looking like "Homegrown" will move up to #20 instead of my earlier prediction of #19.

My favorite band with my favorite producer? Hell yeah. I don't think this sounds cluttered at all. It has the Joyce edge to it, but it still has that relaxed ZBB feel to it. Great combination, and I especially like the introduction of banjo to the mix. I hear a bit of the 70's country rock flavoring that "All Alright" had, too, and I like the varied instrumentation and arrangement near the end.

Homegrown's peak of #4 on the mongrel chart is already Zac Brown Band's highest on that chart. Their previous highest was #5 with Goodbye In Her Eyes.

I had been feeling like Zac Brown Band was getting into a bit of a melodic rut based on the singles from Uncaged, so I'm really relieved that "Homegrown" doesn't sound like a retread of the band's earlier singles (the way "Sweet Annie," for example, sounded like a retread of "Colder Weather"). The lyrics are a bit ordinary, but they sit naturally enough in the melody to create a believable character -- a simple and grateful man who has seen days of ambition but has matured and settled into a quiet, rural rhythm of life that works for him. The personality of the song recalls Josh Turner's "Everything Is Fine," but I like this song considerably better. I appreciate the instrumental jams that introduce the song and show up again midway through the song, they are a burst of energy that remind us that this is Zac Brown Band, after all, and maybe also hint at the narrator's crazier days.
A lot of the musical elements seem borrowed from 70s rock (which actually enhances the comfortable vibe to the song), but the production is percussive in a way that fits contemporary country, and the melody builds on the old school soulfulness of some of Uncaged's album tracks. So all things considered, this feels like a smart single choice from Zac Brown Band -- it maintains their identity in the current landscape, and it combines old school musical nostalgia with new school radio-friendly production. I'm glad to see it off to a strong start at radio and retail, and hope it keeps up the momentum.

I couldn't figure out why but I think you summed it up! Love the pronounced banjo leading up to the chorus and the full harmonies. I've come to enjoy these songs about being fortunate... MG's Lucky Man comes to mind.

I just heard this tune for the first time on Go Country 105 and it blew my doors off; this is unquestionably their strongest single in quite awhile, and should have little trouble winding up as one of the year's very biggest singles thanks to what figures to be a lengthy (20+ weeks) chart run and a hefty portion of recurrent airplay.
Country radio has undoubtedly been CRAVING new music from these guys, and based on those solid opening week Mediabase airplay stats, it will encounter little resistance in streaking up the charts
