And, on that note...
#3 on itunes again!
Lol.
If radio doesn't play the song, that's their choice. But, don't act like this is some unanimously horrible song that no one likes and only has Rihanna's name behind it. Song has been selling quite well WORLDWIDE since it debuted weeks ago.
EDIT: I'd also like to add that this song was clearly something meant to be experimental, adventurous, and jarring. Comparing the chart performance of this with previous safer singles kind of misses the entire point of the song. This wasn't supposed to be some obvious chart topping, beat driven joint. This song is a challenge. This song is a problem. This song basically declared war on the format and still still made top 6. It wasn't even forced, as sales and streaming have proven. That's amazing. This song has been an undeniable success if you actually look at the big picture. If you focus on whether it reaches #1 or not as your only measure of success, then you're not seeing the forest for the trees.

Spot on. The streaming and sales numbers make this single an undeniable success. It's on pace to get around 15 million streams on Spotify worldwide this week, which is pretty darn amazing.

Okay, I guess someone's gotta say it. This single is stalling. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but from observing these boards I see a lot of bias in a lot of these threads and if any other song would be performing like this the obvious would've already been stated. So I guess I'll do the job here. This single only got airplay because Rihanna's name was attached to it. Now that the hype has settled it appears to be getting lost in the shuffle. I am very concerned about the rest of the era and how the singles will perform if the 1st one was only able to get this high. With the exception of the "Rated R" era, all of Rihanna's first singles were the biggest off the album. So once again, I don't think she will have a bigger hit this era.

Weird how the sales and streaming for this are so strong yet the callouts are so poor.
Did We Can't Stop have a similar situation minus the streaming since I don't believe the new chart rules were in effect then?
Anyway, regardless if this is dying it's been a huge success WW so I'm not even mad.

Did We Can't Stop have a similar situation minus the streaming since I don't believe the new chart rules were in effect then? That had sort of similar callout scores, yes. It had a polarizing reaction. But streaming was fully integrated by then (you remember the week "Stay" surged? That's when the new rules took effect); Miley was the queen of streaming, and WCS peaked at #2 on the Hot 100 boosted by that.

The staying power of her lead singles in the UK always impresses me. Most big acts reach a point where their peak is towards the beginning, but hers always stick.

Yeah I remember the massive streaming of Wrecking Ball, and how they were dumb as hell for not putting Stay on Spotify robbing it of being her 14th #1 Happy this has a new peak in the UK :)

I don't think the callout scores being poor is a surprise at all. One only needs to go to the beginning of the thread to realize how divisive the song is. In fact i was surprised this did so well way behind the initial reaction. Being a Rihanna's song big airplay updates were expected, but this continue to climb without showing any weakness till recently. Anyway it will be top 5 for sure

#6 is 95% likely going to be its peak here as the top 5 is way too stacked and it has Ellie right behind it. Hopefully it sticks around awhile though and has a slow descent and not a plummet.

What would make a song be quite successful on streaming, yet fare rather poorly in radio callout (aside from viral effects, which only last so long)? That's a sort of contrast that I don't...really quite understand.

What would make a song be quite successful on streaming, yet fare rather poorly in radio callout (aside from viral effects, which only last so long)? That's a sort of contrast that I don't...really quite understand. Basically, it's because of how the data is collected. Streaming and sales only take positive reception into account. Every time a stream is counted, it means a person showed interest in the song and listened to it, giving the song a streaming point. If they liked it, great, they'll probably buy it or listen again and get it more points. If not, oh well, they'll just let it be and not bother with it again. That won't retract from its streaming or sales total though. Both sets of data can only grow within any tracking period, and non-fans of the song can not do anything to stop it from getting these points. However, radio reception is different. Both positive and negative feedback play a role, and radio PD's actually care more about negative reception. If a song doesn't get much love but doesn't have many retractors either, they'll continue to play it because that means less people are likely to change the station, giving them ratings. That's how low-selling generic songs like "Neon Lights" become radio hits. They're harmless fluff that don't cause many people to change the station, but they don't necessarily garner enough interest for listeners to look into them more. However, if a song does get negative feedback, that means people may want to change the station, which lowers ratings, meaning less money for the station. They'll usually end up playing it less because of that. So with a song like "FourFiveSeconds", you're gonna have fans and haters, because it's definitely a polarizing song with a completely different sound than anything on pop radio in recent memory. For a lot of people, this is exactly what they want, and that will cause them to stream and buy the song. But for many others, it will sound odd on their radio in the car and they won't want to hear it anymore. That's when negative feedback comes in, and radio performance is hindered. Hopefully that made sense :)

Oh. So streaming is no more influential on radio performance than sales are (maybe a little more at best).

So I'm hearing TTS's adds date is canceled?
Good news. I think they're definitely gearing up for a more radio-ready single.

I highly doubt anything else on the album is going to be acoustic (or at least any future singles). It would be foolish for them to not promote American Oxygen as a full single since it'll be getting a great amount of TV promo, and considering they've already shot a video for it I wouldn't be surprised if it was released next week. I'm sure they see how FFS did on radio and are prepared with a song more geared towards radio as the next single; they're not stupid. So I'm hearing TTS's adds date is canceled? Good news. I think they're definitely gearing up for a more radio-ready single. As much as I love that song I'm also happy to hear that.

Is that old person's video going viral? There's been some pretty serious increases with this song today on Itunes.

Back at #3 on iTunes US! A shame Pop radio is apparently letting this go.
