I recall the reactions to "Russian Roulette" and "Diamonds" being more along the lines of "this is a boring lead single" than "this is a terrible song". Exactly. People thought "Russian Roulette" was boring and lacked a hook and a melody. "Diamonds" was mostly criticism about the repetitiveness of the lyrics and her enunciation. I can't recall a Rihanna single, lead or otherwise, being met with this harsh of a reaction.

Has anyone mentioned how the chorus sounds like "Burnin Up" by the Jonas Brothers? I'm not trying to knock it but I can't get it out of my head.

Sam Smith is stanning for this song on Twitter Also, this has already hit #1 on three countries: Sweden, Ukraine, and Barbados and is Top10 on 17 more. So Top10 on 20 countries (on iTunes) so far! ETA: #10 in Portugal, YASSS!

What the hell Paul? Did Heather Mills find a way to take all of your money to force you to make this.

I'm almost certain there will be an urban remix so I'm unbothered abt the minimalistic approach.

Once again....reaffirmation that Pulse and the real world have nothing to do with each other, lol.
#FourFiveSeconds is still trending from last night, and most of the tweets I see are positive. Sales are great worldwide.
Random tweet: "Imagine hearing #FourFiveSeconds live in a big arena. Lights out, Rih on a chair with Nuno on the guitar. Everybody's cellphone in the air." <---gets music

Pop (78 spins); Rhythmic (22 spins); Hot AC (20 spins); Urban (9 spins)
Posted on ATRL by a poster named Andrew. Don't know how reliable it is.

Of course Rihanna's brand new single along with Paul and Kanye would receive a lot of initial attention.

Well, I wasn't expecting this to be the lead single and if it's considered that it's going to have a radio deal, it will be interesting to see how it does after it ends.
Anyway, I don't think this was mentioned, but it's available for pre-order in the UK and it will be out there tomorrow (7pm. EST today), so it will have a full week of tracking.

Good for Rih! I may not LOVE this, but I always love seeing her having success! :)
Anyways, Im going to give this a second listen, but this at least sounded decent on first listen, just still not sold on it being a single tbh. (Same problem with Kanye's song)

Maybe this is intended as her Kanye "I'm an artist and pop culture icon, I release what I want and don't care about the charts" moment.
If this is really intended as a lead single, that's the only explanation I can come up with. I'm still not sure I buy it, even after her tweet. If it somehow is the lead, I'm sure they've got a more radio-ready second single waiting in the wings when this inevitably bombs in callout three weeks in and stalls below the Top 10.

What annoys me most about this song is that there ARE some good elements about it, but it seems like they left it so unpolished to try and make some artistic statement and it just....didn't work. It's coming off really pretentious, which I guess isn't surprising considering Kanye West is involved.
Strictly from a business standpoint, the launch of the single has been very sloppy. A Saturday night premiere? No audio up on streaming sites? I'm confused. This also abandons the urban audience that she gained with "Unapologetic."

I don't understand why people say she grow up vocally. Rihanna always sound great recorded, it's the live performances the ones that are atrocious Given the reaction i'm very curious You obviously didn't watch he Grammys performance of Stay... Anyway I can't believe the reaction Pulse is having to this song... If this was Taylor Swift or Kelly Clarkson ya'll would be poppin it... Ha, I think my favorite reaction to the song was on rap-up.com - "Did her and Taylor Swift switch genres? Not being funny." That said, I partially agree with you, but partially disagree. I agree that the reaction from Pulse wouldn't be nearly so harsh as to say "omg this is such a bad song!" It kind of reminds me of Kelly's "Chivas," actually. But still, I don't think people would think it was single-worthy coming from either of them and that is more due to where pop is right now than anything. Taylor couldn't have transitioned to dominating pop so effortlessly with this sound; she would have sounded like she was trying to push her normal country-pop sound to CHR. And God bless my fellow Kelly stans, but there would have been an absolute meltdown if she'd released something like this as a lead lmao. But it's Rihanna...so I still hold to my previous comment that this will do well right away just on the strength of her name alone, not to mention her collaborators. I'm willing to bet its call-out scores aren't going to be nearly as abysmal as its "Pulse" score. But I don't see it lasting that long; I give it a couple of months. Which is fine because Rihanna always follows her lead singles with the second single pretty quickly anyway. I personally don't think the song is bad; the hook is catchy (I only listened to this song three times before going to bed but woke up with it rattling in my head, argh) and and her vocals are about as good as one could expect from what are essentially raw Rihanna vocals (if this were any less produced, it would be a live recording). But she could have done this concept better.

Her vocals are really what keep me from enjoying it. It sounds like she recorded it with her jaw wired shut and a hangover.

I really love this. It's such a fresh feel-good song. I can see it being huge. I completely agree. It doesn't sound like a conventional produced sound that would be on Top 40 right now, but the melody is an absolute earworm. Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if this ended up being huge for her if it is in fact the first single from her next release.

A Saturday night premiere? No audio up on streaming sites? I'm confused. This also abandons the urban audience that she gained with "Unapologetic." I have my own theory as to why she went about it the way she did but I don't want to be messy. I'll just say that I think it was intentional, and that she has rarely been one to release her singles in a 100% proper manner. (ex., it logically didn't make sense to launch Only Girl or We Found Love right after the VMAs, when she could have premiered those songs there) Since it's a weekend release I think it's okay that it's not available for streaming yet; better to save those points for the first full chart week. Also, this wouldn't be the first time she didn't court the urban audience with her lead single. OG and WFL weren't urban tracks, and Diamonds wasn't really intended for that format either. It's kind of a fluke that it got there b/c it was in the 60s on urban airplay when Billboard changed the genre chart rules that catapulted it to #1. After that, the format started playing it more and it peaked at #11 on urban airplay, if I am not mistaken.
