Third single from In The Lonely Hour. Impacts pop on March 10, according to AllAccess.

Gem of a song. Odd single choice.

Nice song but he needed to change it up with 'Like I Can.' This just feels like more of the same...

I love the song, but... another slow song? Why not "Like I Can"?!?

I can't handle him sorry. His songs are the definition of sleepy and boring dreck.

I had no idea this was even on the album lmao. I looooove this. The acoustic is perfection. I agree with everyone saying he should have gone with "Like I Can" next to switch it up, but that song had a super high burn rate on me (don't know if others had that). Guessing this does moderate, then he'll release "Like I Can" and have another Top 5 hit on his hands. Guessing this breaks the Top 20 and peaks in the upper-teens.

Ugh. Like I Can should've been next, they really needed to switch it up.

Wouldn't be surprised if this ends the hits for his debut. I don't think he's done though.

Not a bad single, but would've been better following something a bit different like "LIC."

I think he can pull off a third ballad, but not a ballad like this. Why not "Leave Your Lover"?

Love this song but it should have been fourth after Like I Can.

Is this the sing Rickey sang on the last season of the voice? I think his label should have gone with an uptempo.

WHAT?!? The album has plenty of potential hits, and this is literally one of the few that absolutely isn't. Who the hell made this choice? Like I Can would kill it in the US. Or if they were gonna do yet another ballad at least go with Leave Your Lover. This will kill the era before Like I Can and Restart could smash. #smh

Like I Can is the obvious smash on the album and it could easily hit top 3. Money On My Mind would do fine at this point, too. Even Restart would be a much better choice than this. I mean, he really needs to change it up a bit this time - I'm Not The Only One couldn't hit number one and that was the perfect follow-up to Stay With Me, not to mention that it is one of the best songs on the album. Anybody can see that it's time for him to switch it up by releasing something different and he has plenty of good options. But if he REALLY wants to release a ballad next, it should be Leave Your Lover. This will kill every momentum he has right now and close the era so what are they thinking?

Well, i agree with everybody. I love the song, the accoustic version is fantastic, and even this doesn't sound like his previous singles it's still an slow song.
In my opinion the grammys has a lot to do with this choice. I think he doesn't feel too comfortable with Like i can live, not with the singing but with the movement on stage. He is really good with this live, he is going to need a killer performance at the grammys to give this a real push. Of course nothing will make sense if he doesn't sing this at the grammys.
The problem is not the delay of Like i can (which could do really well on spring and summer), the problem is three slow songs in a row.
Anyway, this was always way ahead of Like i can on itunes, so maybe it'll be a decent third single and don't kill the momentum for the release of Like i can as fourth single.
In my opinion he is taking an unnecesary risk, switching the order and it will work better, but i love the song and i hope it works

I hope they go with this version, it's still slow but at least it sounds very different from previous singles (they can send the accoustic version to AC radio)

I hate this song. They should have released Restart, Like I Can, or Safe With Me.

It feels like this album has been out for forever now. He should just start a fresh new project IMO.

This is such a bore. They're going so damn far in establishing him as a "male Adele" in the US now. Completely defeats the point of releasing his Disclosure and Naughty Boy collaborations in the US if they want him stuck in one box anyway.
I've lost interest in Sam since his album came out anyway, but "Like I Can" is one of his few solo songs I keep going back to. Other better choices would be "Money On My Mind" (fun but still soulful) or, yes, should-be album track "Nirvana" which remains his best solo song.

It feels like this album has been out for forever now. He should just start a fresh new project IMO. But it's not. Momentum can change at every minute, but right now there's no reason to not go with four or even five singles (if he release something faster, of course). Right now there are people (Ariana and Taylor) that are releasing singles like there's no tomorrow, but the truth is his strategy is working, unless till now. I agree this is not the best choice, and in my opinion he should go with something more uptempo (everybody thinks Like i can will do very well, even when there's no interest on itunes right now, but with airplay i think it's perfect for him). I don't know what it's going to happen at the grammys, he could score big or pull a Mariah and not win nothing, but i doubt his album drop anytime soon, and i will be very surprised if In the lonely hour doesn't sell more than two millions. He left some great songs out of the album, Nirvana is simply fantastic, and Safe with me shows a totally different side of his sound. I understand why he play safe with the album, now it seems almost inevitable that he is successful, but things didn't look that bright at the beginning, and he is not your typical sure shot. In my opinion he stablish himself, people know him, know he has a great voice and he sounds fantastic live, and he has fans of all ages, so maybe it's time to put something for younger audiences (in my opinion the older audiences are easier to keep). So i don't know, maybe rerelease the album with some of the great songs that he left out. I think Like i can is a smash waiting to happen, but radio showed interest in Safe with me before I'm not the only one was sent to radio (Safe with me was near top 60 on airplay), and it's a song that gives him an edge. I think this will probably work, he is a hot artist right now, but he needs to end this era with something very different, because in the future he is going to experiment with his sound and it's better if people gets used to something different than soulfull ballads, or he is going to risk rejection when he change the direction of his music Other thing that is weird of chosing this for being the third single is this unlike Like i can, Restart or Leave your lover doesn't have a video. He is not a visual artist, and the videos won't pull a big effect on the performance of his songs, but he is on tour (i red an article about George Ezra being on tour with him) so he is not going to have much time to do a video. And right now hits without a video are very rare (Don't Tell em is a rare exception)

I could see this blowing up after his Grammys performance, assuming he is performing this song.

If I was the manager or personnel at the record label, I would suggest that he perform a medley of "Lay Me Down" and "Like I Can" at the Grammy Awards; and gauge the reaction to both tracks on iTunes, Spotify and YouTube the week after before finalizing on the single release. The fact that his album has been nominated for Album of the Year gives him a good enough reason to perform multiple and not-so-known tracks during the ceremony. I think it's a legitimate concern that he's releasing three slow tracks consecutively but he can always break the box via collaborations with artists of other genres down the road.

I'm afraid of this... At least he's shown versatility in his features, but the label should be very careful. A good video, and maybe a remix could be very useful to avoid the Leona problem...

No idea why I wrote March in the first post, but I meant February, and now the adds date's been pushed up a week to February 3.

Too bad "Restart" is just a bonus track because I'd actually prefer that to be the next single as opposed to this.

Not releasing LIC or MOMM is just bizarre at this point. Zero sense.
I'm sure that whatever he releases will click but it would make more sense to me to release a sure bet at this point.

Looks like they're pushing the In the Lonely Hour mix of this instead of the single version or acoustic. Under Cool New Music (with a cool single artwork too).
