Jay Z To Buy Streaming Music Service Aspiro for $56 MillionThe hip-hop mogul wants to challenge Spotify
Taylor Swift isn’t the only artist to throw up roadblocks in Spotify’s march toward music streaming domination, as Jay Z has now made an offer to purchase a streaming service of his own.
The hip-hop mogul — real name Shawn Carter — is in the process of buying the Scandinavian music streaming company Aspiro for a reported $56 million. Project Panther Bidco Ltd, a company controlled by Jay Z, told Reuters on Friday that it had made the move to purchase the service after watching Aspiro for some time and finding it to be “an innovative high-quality company with strong future growth potential.”
Aspiro’s main shareholder, the Norwegian media group Schibsted, has said they’ve accepted the offer.
Aspiro runs two music streaming services, both of which are ad-free. One is WiMP, which has limited availability in Europe, and the other is Tidal, a high-definition audio service that is available in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Finland, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.Source: time.com/3689197/jay-z-aspiro-streaming-service/ETA: More info can be found here: www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/jan/30/jay-z-apple-spotify-streaming-music

I wonder if Taylor will end being involved somehow. Perhaps Jay Z and Beyonce were at her B-day party for business reasons. Plus, she's been open about her issues w/ Spotify.

I guess Jay-Z has money to throw through the window. I doubt this service will ever be a threat to Spotify, Pandora, Deezer or Apple.

The impact that it gives is leverage for Roc Nation artists in the streaming world right now. Rihanna, J Cole, Calvin Harris etc are big streaming draws and Jay Z having the ability to keep his artists on an in-house platform allows him better leverage in negotiating with other streaming services.
It also gives him a piece of the pie on the ground level of the one segment of the industry that is actually growing, and bigger services like Spotify or Deezer could be willing to pay him a premium on the small market share that he has just to push a smaller service out of the market.

I like that it includes videos! Something I wish Spotify had available.

I don't like Spotify at all and am happy with my XBOX Music Pass. I wonder how this will do?

They better lower that monthly cost or they'll never survive.

They better lower that monthly cost or they'll never survive. There will be some out there who may pay that much if that were a higher tier (better quality) but it's steep. I can see the reasoning behind charging more because there could be a greater amount paid in royalties, but then there won't be very many people who will pay a higher amount just so the artists get more.

There's usually a customer for most things but I don't see much of an audience. Part of why streaming became popular was that it was cheap enough. The audience that are drawn to streaming aren't typically the ones who think it's worth it to pay about $240 a year for music.
If, for example, Taylor Swift was the only artist not available on Spotify that a person listens to, it would be much cheaper to just buy the album and continue to stream the rest elsewhere.

Taylor's entire catalogue is on Tidal. 1989 is not streaming on Tidal (or any other streaming service) All Taylor Swift albums (except 1989) have been available for streaming on other streaming services (Rdio, GooglePlay) for quite a while. Only Spotify doesn't have any TS music.

I signed up for the trial. I'm curious to see how this ends out. There's not really much of a market for this at first glance, but they're trying to raise the price floor on a service that was created to catch a lower common denominator.

I think the $9.99 one is reasonable if one were to sign up and actually pay for one of these services. That's the price of one album, and if one listens a lot, and there are little to no limitations and whatnot, that's not that much. I still use Spotify to preview new albums and albums I missed out on from before, but I don't use it for individual tracks and stuff now. There is a lot that they just don't have.

FYI, 1989 isn't on TIDAL either - just everything before it. I wouldn't be surprised if something surprise-releases this week to get people interested in the service. (Personally, I don't care much about the quality difference - while I picked 4/5 hi-fi tracks on their test, the differences were pretty hard to notice - and I don't really want to give my credit card info just for the 14-day trial.)

Rumor has it that Rihanna and Jay-Z are both releasing surprise albums this week and the only place to stream them will be on Tidal.

If this service proves decent enough, I may switch my $9.99/month from Spotify to Tidal.
EDIT: Maybe the "Ghosttown" video will premiere via Tidal

I tried Tidal... a couple of times. Too many holes in the catalog. For several hip-hop titles I found that only the clean version were available.
After trying most of the paid services available in the US (Spotify, Rdio, Rhapsody, Google Play, Deezer) I think the best is Rdio: very good mobile apps and desktop, good catalog and good responsive support. I actually requested a couple of titles and they were added. Google Play is a close second.

With all the digital services I already pay for, I'll stick to green. I mean, for one, the marketing makes you want to steal music out of spite. We have price gouging masquerading as some kind of social movement for which lives depend on. Like, fuck off. They should be thankful I'm paying $10 a month for Spotify Premium when free alternatives, i.e. piracy, are awfully convenient. The fraternizing of pop music's elite should be interrogated, if not looked down upon. And if any of these losers pull out of Spotify, I'll manage just fine pretending they don't exist. Most of them already don't in my world.

I wonder if Tidal is an abbreviation of this: The Illuminati Digital Audio Library
The event is happening now.
Alicia Keys, Arcade Fire, Beyonce, Calvin Harris (via Skype), Chris Martin (via Skype), Daft Punk, Deadmau5, Jay-Z, Jason Aldean, Jack White, J. Cole, Kanye West, Madonna, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, and Usher are all there on stage right now.
Alicia Keys spoke first and then all the artists on stage are signing the declaration.

Looks like artists want to blame streaming services for the current state of music and not the record labels... probably because most of them are record label owners too.
