Which show do you prefer, overall? Base you decision on each series as a whole (all 7 seasons of The Voice and all 14+ seasons of American Idol), not necessarily the state of the shows right now.

Easily American Idol. The Voice has always fell flat as a show for me.

Idol was pretty great from seasons 1-5, and I've rooted for talented others in later seasons.
It started to fall before Simon left , though, and the show really fell without the original judges. I also feel like Idol's tried to change their format way too many times, and it was perfect the way it was in earlier seasons.
During its heyday we got Carrie, Kelly, Jennifer, Kat, and lots of great talent, so I can't knock the track record.
I enjoy The Voice occasionally, and I actually really enjoy the chemistry between the judges and their performances. I think the format is unique, and the mentoring is fun to watch. However, The Voice clearly doesn't put the focus on the contestants, and the fact that they have yet to create a household name throughout so many seasons says it all.
Although I haven't watched Idol regularly in years, I've got to get them credit for creating stars, and, in their glory days, the judging panel really did try to help these kids in terms of the realty they would face after the show. The focus used to be on the contestants and helping them grow, but Idol also made veiwers care about contestants, so they WANTED these singers to succeed. Now, there's a plethora of singing shows that seem to think they can either copy or create an "original" singing show, but Idol's glory days can't be beat, nor can they be copied with such a simplistic formula.

Always preferred Idol, but that's really based on seasons 1-8. After that, the only season I'd say I "enjoyed" was 12, even with all the controversy. So if this were based on now only, I'd say The Voice.
But I suppose it depends on what you prefer and what you're tuning in for. I prefer hearing new voices, whereas watching The Voice is more like watching a sitcom with music artists. And since I don't really like Blake Shelton or Adam Levine, it doesn't draw me as much as Idol did in its early years.

American Idol based on it's early seasons. The early seasons were the best for this show. "The Voice" after the auditions isn't that interesting at all.Cassadee Pope is the most successful of "The Voice" winners but isn't that well known outside of her genre. AI gets my vote.

The Voice couldn't even hold my attention when Shakira was a judge, and I live for her. So yeah, it's always been Idol for me, all the way. Even when it's not at it's best, it's still better than watching The Voice.

I actually enjoy both shows, but Idol tips the edge here.

The Voice is a hit TV show, American Idol is/was an absolute phenomenon.
*The first eight seasons (plus 10 and 11, if we're talking about the overall talent) were fantastic. Seasons 9, 12 and 13 have been rough.
