FIFTY SHADES OF GREEN
Bondage Flick's ST Is Getting Hot and Heavy
Republic’s soundtrack set for Fifty Shades of Grey, streeting this week, looks set for a debut in the neighborhood of 175-200k, with its assorted happening singles adding another 15-20k on the SPS (Singles Plus Streaming) Chart.
The album, which will no doubt be go-to booty music for throngs of moviegoers once they catch the flick’s Valentine’s Day opening, is now #1 at iTunes; several singles, notably Ellie Goulding’s “Love Me Like You Do,” The Weeknd’s “Earned It” and AWOLNATION’s “I’m on Fire,” having blown up at the digital store.
Meanwhile, Goulding’s track moved #32-26 at Pop radio this week, while “Earned It” is set to chart soon at Rhythm.
As Republic’s renowned vinyl fetishist Tom Mackay informed us a while back, music is deeply integrated into the story, with songs having been created expressly for the film and working organically (and, one presumes, orgasmically) with the visuals. This includes the first song Producer of the Year Max Martin has ever penned for a motion picture.
Expect the movie’s relentless marketing and multiple tie-ins to drive much more attention for the album, and for songs from the set to continue disrupting iTunes and other avenues.
(TEA numbers geek digression: If a song on a soundtrack also appears on an artist’s album—as is the case with Fifty Shades’ Annie Lennox, Rolling Stones and Frank Sinatra tracks, among others—single sales accrue to the artist’s album TEA, not the soundtrack.)

Wow, the new soundtrack era is upon us. Twilight jump-started it and now we have The Hunger Games, Frozen, Pitch Perfect, Guardians of the Galaxy and 50 Shades of Grey.

Holy cow. But, the movie is a supposed turkey. Will the sdtk. have legs?? Honestly, I think it will. You don't have to enjoy the movie to enjoy the soundtrack. There's the Ellie Goulding hit + countless other tracks and artists that will get people's interests.

I can't get enough of the Ellie Goulding. Max Martin is a god and seeing him at the Grammy's was awesome. It's too bad they didn't air that award.

They made both of the Beyonce remixes as "album only" purchases on iTunes. Smart move. Pisses me off because I don't feel like dropping that much coin on this album, but I also get the Goulding track and Annie Lennox's "I Put A Spell On You" along with it, so it's worth it. Judging by the huge opening sales week for it, I'm guessing others are along the same thinking pattern.

It is weird to me that this has such a great soundtrack. Like, borderline inspired how they balanced it between newer and older acts and the songs themselves are pretty high quality.

Well, good.
This should be the 3rd future 500k seller out so far in 2015.
Trainor and Fall Out Boy...

What bothers me with this launch is that neither of the 2 initial singles, a.k.a. the ones people bought (Goulding and Weeknd), count towards CMA. Also, the album is on sale for $8 on Xbox Music, which works out well if you want the album and got the singles + the original I Put a Spell on You.

With potentially 3 hit singles off the soundtrack (or more, who knows what they have planned for it) I think it could really have some legs, even if the movie is panned. We know the movie is going to be huge this weekend, which will probably move plenty of units next week. Its the week after that is a question mark.

Most movie soundtracks that open with ~200k tend to reach platinum. This is not a Fall Out Boy album we're talking about.
But we'll see.

There's a lot of buzz around the movie (thought most of them is negative, the actors really seem to hate each other, and frankly with such horrid book is impossible to make a good movie) and that will help to carry the first weeks sales. But i doubt the movie will have legs on the box office. Anyway, this could be one of those cases when people reminds the music and forget the film (Reality bites, City of angels)

Dreamgirls hit #1 and I think was certified platinum (Wiki page doesn't say, but I found another website that did), but that wasn't all that unique or impactful back in 2007. That's what I assumed when the pawn... was talking about regarding a new soundtrack era - this new bunch of soundtracks are not just reaching #1 when they debut, they're actually going on to be year-end top 10 albums at a time when album sales in general are decreasing.

This biggest song on that soundtrack was Jennifer Hudson doing "And I Am Telling You..." Anyway, something like Dreamgirls is different because most if not all of that is music sung in the film. High School Musical also had a couple of its soundtracks go to #1, but those were songs sung in the film, too. I was assuming people were talking soundtracks where songs be a various group of artists who are not actors in the film are collected together. Juno was a soundtrack by various artists, and it hit #1 and went platinum earlier in the same year the Twilight soundtrack dropped.

It was a long time ago, but 8 Mile opened with 702,000 copies sold in the Fall of 2002.

I'd say the 'new era' of soundtracks started up again with the Twilight ones, as they also had singles and hits (to some degree). Obviously there have been others in the time between the late 90s and then that did well but it didn't really become a norm until Twilight, Hunger Games, etc.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6465953/fifty-shades-of-grey-soundtrack-number-1'Fifty Shades of Grey' Soundtrack Aiming to Tie Down No. 1By Keith Caulfield | February 11, 2015 8:09 PM EST The Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack is off to a steamy start, as industry forecasters suggest it could debut at No. 1 on next week's Billboard 200 chart. Sources say Fifty Shades of Grey -- released on Feb. 10 through Republic Records -- may move over 180,000 in overall equivalent album units in the week ending Feb. 15. If it bows at No. 1, it would be the first soundtrack to debut atop the Billboard 200 since 2012, when The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 and Beyond opened in the top slot. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Billboard 200's top 10 will be revealed on Wednesday, Feb. 18. However, keep an eye out on Sam Smith's surging In the Lonely Hour, which should see a significant boost up the list following the Feb. 8 Grammy Awards and threaten Fifty Shades of Grey for No. 1. Smith took home four Grammy Awards and also performed on the show. On the latest Billboard 200 chart, In the Lonely Hour earned a 44 percent unit gain, shifting 86,000 in the week ending Feb. 8. The album held steady at No. 4 for a second week. The Capitol Records set has yet to hit No. 1 -- it debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the list. Also due for a big gain on next week's chart is Beck's Grammy Award winner for album of the year, Morning Phase. The set re-entered the latest Billboard 200 chart at No. 39 with 12,000 units (up 771 percent), marking its first week on the chart since the list dated Sept. 20, 2014, and its highest rank since it was No. 32 on May 10.

I think next week's chart could be interesting. Sam's album is selling less on iTunes than Beck, but he's obviously getting a biggest SEA/TEA boost I think the Top 5 in the Top Sales chart could be in a very different order than the Top 5 of the BB200.
