I think next week's chart could be interesting. Sam's album is selling less on iTunes than Beck, but he's obviously getting a biggest SEA/TEA boost I think the Top 5 in the Top Sales chart could be in a very different order than the Top 5 of the BB200. But Sam Smith has two albums in the top 10 on itunes so he's probably selling more than Beck. In fact, the itunes chart now shows his album jumped over Beck's and is now #2. It probably helps that it's on sale for 6.99 while the deluxe version is still 13.99 (the one currently at #8)

With reference to Twilight jump-starting it, it feels very much like the 50 Shades/Hunger Games/Guardians of the Galaxy soundtracks with carefully curated soundtracks that really capture the essence of the film.
Dreamgirls is a different animal, I guess, as a popular movie-musical, like Into the Woods or Chicago.

I was looking for the article but can't seem to find it now, but there was an interview with an exec from (I believe Sony) maybe a year ago when Frozen was really starting to explode about how movie studios are looking more and more to team up with record labels to turn soundtracks from just "music from a movie" into something that carries the experience of seeing a film outside of the movie theatre into the daily life of the consumer. Most of us aren't going to go see the same movie 10 times (except in really exceptional cases), so the transaction is a singular event. By leveraging music tie-ins, studios can keep a customer coming back again and again to other products that are related to the film, which is especially important when they're trying to build a brand for a movie franchise. Plus listening to the music months after the films first theatrical run can drive DVD sales (and vice versa, DVD sales and drive renewed interest in the soundtrack a la Frozen)

Nicki holding again with the help of SPS! Unfortunately she might get knocked out of the Top 10 :( 8 consecutive weeks was a great run though for a female rapper! Ouch @ Ricky Martin's sales

Well, I guess Taylor will be knocked from the top 2 for the first time, though if Style continue it's advance in Radio, I don't have any doubt that 1989 will return to #1 soon.

The release schedule is picking up. She'll have to be moving 100k+ each week in raw sales over the next month at least, and I dont see that happening at this point, even if Style blows up.

Stop wondering about #1 and enjoy what 1989 has done!

Drake is up on streaming services now (he wasn't this morning), thought they were going a full Beyonce by only having it up for sale. Didn't hurt J Cole's album to be up for streaming right away though.

Hits says it's a mix tape and not an album for Drake. I don't know what that means. Is it not going to be put on the charts as an album?

It's for sale, no matter what they call it, so I don't think it should matter. The album isn't ranked on iTunes for some reason, but individual tracks are showing in the Top 100.

SALES PREVIEW UPDATE: DRAKE UNLEASHES A MONSTER
We didn’t see this coming. Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late will debut at #1 on the HITS Album and SPS charts next week, spoiling what looked less than 24 hours ago like a slam dunk for the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack—but the marketshare goes to the same place, so Republic can’t complain. What’s more, the surprise mixtape could see first-weekend sales of 500k. Strangely, as of 8am PT, the album has yet to appear on the iTunes chart. But there’s a precedent: It took Beyoncé’s 2013 surprise release several hours before landing at #1.
Our numbers gnomes are trying to determine whether If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late will be the best-selling or highest-debuting mixtape ever. For the record, Drake's first charting recording a re-release of a mixtape six years ago. Stay tuned for further updates.

Woah. 500k without a smash single on radio?
It looks like surprise releases are going to be the new thing with sales like this.

So if by "sales" HDD means raw sales, it could be well over 500 with SEA/TEA added and for just 3 days worth of action.
I think surprise releases will only work for a few artists, Drake being one of them.
Also the rumor is this isn't actually the album that Drake has been working on, and that he'll have another full album out with a full promo schedule later in the year.

Drake :o :o :o
I definitely think there's some glitch with the albums chart. There's no way the album isn't #1 on iTunes.

You have to have a strong undercurrent buzz for this type of release to work. With J. Cole, Beyonce, and Drake we all knew that they were working on releases, it was just only a matter of WHEN that was always lingering in the air.

Woah. 500k without a smash single on radio? It looks like surprise releases are going to be the new thing with sales like this. It isn't always going to work. Drake is one of the biggest artists in music right now and has a massive online following plus multiple giant singles on radio currently and in the past couple of months. Everyone has been extremely hungry for new Drake material. He is one of the rare exceptions to the rule in which he can open without a true single.

It has been awhile since he has released new music. Gaga should do the same thing next release ;)

Also the rumor is this isn't actually the album that Drake has been working on, and that he'll have another full album out with a full promo schedule later in the year. That's not a rumor. That's a fact. Views from the 6 is the album he was working on. This is the mixtape that we were expecting. We weren't expecting him to release it for sale though. The real rumor is that this surprise release was done to fulfill his Cash Money contract.

Would this be the last album of new material that was required of him for CM then? Or does this make Views From The 6 the last one?

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6472854/drake-if-youre-reading-this-its-too-late-billboard-200-debutDrake's Surprise Album Heading for No. 1 on Billboard 200 ChartBy Keith Caulfield | February 13, 2015 1:45 PM EST 'If You're Reading This…' could sell 400,000 copies by Sunday night. Drake's surprise album If You're Reading This It's Too Late is aiming to become his fourth No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. Industry forecasters expect the set -- which was released late in the evening on Feb. 12 through Young Money/Cash Money/Republic Records -- to easily bow atop next week's Billboard 200. While it's still a bit early to get a proper projection on what it might sell through the end of the tracking week on Sunday, Feb. 15, sources have floated figures as high as 400,000. That would be the largest sales week for a rap album since November of 2013, when Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP 2 bowed at No. 1 with 792,000 sold (according to Nielsen Music) in its first week. Thus, If You're Reading This will block its fellow Republic Records release, the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack, from No. 1. The latter, which bowed as planned on Feb. 10 and was on track to open atop the chart, could sell upwards of 160,000 copies (with its overall album equivalent figure aiming for 200,000). The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Billboard 200's top 10 albums (for the week ending Feb. 15) will be revealed on Wednesday, Feb. 18. If Drake tops the Billboard 200, it will mark his fourth consecutive leader on the list, and fourth to debut at No. 1. It would follow his first three chart-topping full-length studio albums: Thank Me Later (released in 2010), Take Care (2011) and Nothing Was the Same (2013).

And that is why the Billboard journalists don't write anything for definite until it happens (e.g. 1989 "may go #1 this week) *drops mic*
