Picking up the album later today at Target (gotta have those two bonus tracks)! $13.99. They didn't even have her stocked on the new release shelf (although her price tag was there) when I went this morning; it was still on the cart. It was on the New Release Shelf when I got there. 3 copies left, so I ended up getting two (one for me, one for a present) and my friend got the 3rd copy. HitsDailyDouble has this listed for "Beautiful Surprise" so I hope this album can improve on those sales!

For some reason I thought her previous two or three albums had sold more overall than that. But yeah, what was the point of signing to a major label if she was going to end up doing the same (or maybe less) than what she was doing before as an independent artist. She deserves better. I haven't made it through the whole album yet, but it's really nice so far.

I thought she had higher sales on some of her earlier albums too. I'm shocked More did under 200k.

I think it gave her better access to some of the producers/songwriters she might've wanted to work it (imagine getting The-Dream and Polow Da Don on a indie label budget). I'm shocked More did under 200k. I think that's pretty good, considering it was delayed for more than a year and with a major title/cover/tracklisting change.

Tamia never sold albums, never won awards, never had a solo hit outside of Stranger, and opened for Beyonce and Alicia Keys on tour who came out years after her. Her career makes Mya's look substantial.

George good point about the producers. I'm just thinking in terms of the bottom line; she's getting less money this way and her previous albums didn't lack in quality IMO. But Tamia is obviously not hurting for anything, so it makes sense if she really just wants to make music and the opportunity to work with certain people. Tamia never sold albums, never won awards, never had a solo hit outside of Stranger, and opened for Beyonce and Alicia Keys on tour who came out years after her. Her career makes Mya's look substantial. That's fucking tragic. :( Life really isn't fair sometimes. But could we at least argue So Into You was also a solo hit - for r&b, at least (not counting Fabolous' sample and crossover hit it a few years later). And maybe Imagination could be called a moderate r&b hit.

Considering who Tamia's husband is. I don't really think she cares about album sales or mainstream success. And this deal is just a joint venture deal with Def Jam.
Far as her career, she had a pretty decent career. She doesn't have any mainstream hits except Stranger In My House and although she never won any awards (which I find hard to believe I'm sure she has won something in her career) she certainly has been nominated for a lot. And you have to consider the label she was on Elektra. It wasn't the biggest label it couldn't compete with the bigger labels to give Tamia the pushed she needed.

It’s crazy how her last 2 albums were independent and she was able to score bigger hits and better sales on her own than with a major label. I was originally excited about her signing to a major again because I thought they were planning on really pushing real adult R&B but it looks like that wasn’t the case and she was better on doing it herself again. She got hits and Grammy nominations on her own without a machine. That’s very impressive and shows her validity as an artist and a business woman. .

The only certifications she has are a Gold plaque for A Nu Day and Spend My Life With You. I believe her debut sold over 400k but I couldn't find anything written online to substantiate that (I swear I saw that figure years ago). Keep in mind More (originally titled Still) was delayed almost a year to the day OMY came out (mostly due to her MS diagnosis) and Elektra only released Questions properly so the album debuted high but sank like a stone; Still didn't even get to radio until six months later and then she left the label. Between Friends also sold strongly worldwide (320k+) and was viewed as such a huge success because she had gone pure indie with her own label and gotten significant radio play.
She has 6 Grammy noms and 5 Juno noms (remember she's Canadian) a Soul Train nom. The only award she's actually won is an NAACP award for SMLWY. Yet, she's still here making great music 20 years later on a major label again so she's miles ahead of a lot of her low-key peers in the same boat. For now.

Bottom line Tamia is a wonderful artist with a beautiful voice that continues to make great music 20 years later.

I've always loved her voice and A Nu Day + More are great albums to me but the rest of her work is kinda dull. She's good for highlights but something about her doesn't pop like it should. I feel the same way about Melanie Fiona. Great artists in theory with some amazing tracks but the material is not nearly as strong as it could be.

Hitsdailydouble extended its prediction list and still excluded her. I just...wow.

It's rare for HITS to exclude albums that still chart inside the top-15 but damn! She said she signed with Def Jam because she wanted more exposure...

No surprise her numbers are low. The last album was 13k and I barely think anyone knew she was having an album out this time.

Oh...the clips for this sound so good. The only Tamia album I have is her debut but I might have to get this. I like that she covered Black Butterfly by Deniece Willians too.

Favorites: Stuck With You, Lipstick, Love Falls Over Me, Nowhere, Special
Least favorites: Day One, Sandwich And a Soda, Chaise Lounge
Still undecided: Like You Do, No Lie, Black Butterfly (I don't really care for covers, but she really sings it!)
Haven't heard the bonus tracks yet.

Slated to debut at #24, based on HDD, but Billboard always seems to vary sometimes with the final chart position. Hope it can magically move up to the Top20!
