"See You Again" will be the 99th song to reach #1 on CHR this decade. Does anyone think this song could have lengthy stay at #1 (over 5 to 6 weeks)? Based on the chart now, the popularity of the song/video, and movie, I'd say it's got a reasonable shot at 5-6 weeks easily, which is long stay at #1 in this decade's faster paced "chart climate".
However...I am curious if this song could be rare hit to exceed the 5 to 6 week threshold. As a guy who grew up in the 90s...this was sort of thing was not uncommon. However, of the 99 songs that have hit #1 so far this decade, only four have led the chart longer than 5 or 6 weeks (by my count at least).
- Ke$ha - "Tik Tok" (7 weeks @ #1) (2010) - Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris - "We Found Love" (7 weeks @ #1) (2011-12) - Maroon 5 - "One More Night" (8 weeks @ #1) (2012) - Robin Thicke featuring Pharrell & T.I. - "Blurred Lines" (10 weeks @ #1) (2013)
It will be interesting to see...and close I think. The song is very popular, radio friendly, and about to be number 2 with a +3100 or so bullet???? But it will be facing some stiff competition from the likes of Taylor Swift, Maroon 5, etc in about 4-6 weeks most likely.
Anyway, a random thought or two from your resident chart nerd, lol.

If it makes #1 this weekend it'll have done it in seven weeks - six in the top 40, which is pretty fast.
And only 4 songs with 7 or more weeks this decade is low. I do remember when it felt like 4 to 7 weeks at #1 was the norm and anything less than that felt short while anything longer felt impressive but not out of the ordinary. Does anyone know offhand how many of such #1s of the 2000s there were at 7 weeks or more?

By my count, there were 17 songs in the 2000s that spent 7 or more weeks at #1:
- NSYNC - "Bye Bye Bye" (10 weeks at #1) (2000) - Destiny's Child - "Independent Women Part 1" (2000-01) - Shaggy featuring Rayvon - "Angel" (7 weeks @ #1) (2001) - Christina Aguilera, Pink, Mya & Lil' Kim - "Lady Marmalade" (10 weeks @ #1) (2001) - Nickelback - "How You Remind Me" (8 weeks @ #1) (2001-02) - Avril Lavigne - "Complicated" (8 weeks @ #1) (2002) - Eminem - "Lose Yourself" (8 weeks @ #1) (2002-03) - Outkast - "Hey Ya!" (9 weeks @ #1) (2003-04) - Hoobastank - "The Reason" (8 LONG, PAINFUL weeks @ #1) (2004) (Sorry, I got tried of that song FAST, lol) - Nelly featuing Tim McGray - "Over And Over" (10 weeks @ #1) (2004-05) - Mariah Carey - "We Belong Together" (10 weeks @ #1) (2005) - Shakira featuing Wyclef Jean (7 weeks @ #1) (2006) - Nelly Furtado featuring Timbaland - "Promiscuous" (8 weeks @ # 1) (2006) - Beyonce - "Irreplaceable" (8 weeks @ # 1) (2006-07) - Fergie - "Big Girls Don't Cry" (8 weeks @ #1) (2007) - Timbaland featuring One Republic - "Apologize" (8 weeks @ #1) (2007-08) - Leona Lewis - "Bleeding Love" (10 weeks @ #1) (2008)
To my knowledge this is all of 'em! :) Hopefully my count is correct.

And that's four at 10+ weeks, which I believe is more than the 90s, which only had two I think. I believe that the "modern" BDS chart airplay monitoring began in October of 1992. Looking back, I believe there were actually five 10+ week #1's in the '90s. I've listed each below (as well as a couple close calls) Note that back then, R&R/Mediabase didn't count the 2 weeks around the Holidays when the charts were frozen. For the purposes of this, I have included those 2 weeks if a song remained at #1 during that time period. Also, incredibly, an additional six songs came very close with 9 weeks total spent at the top. - Whitney Houston "I Will Always Love You" (9 weeks @ #1) (1992-93) - Mariah Carey - "Dreamlover" (9 weeks @ #1) (1993) - Ace of Base - "The Sign" (10 weeks @ #1) (1994)
- Dionne Farris - "I Know" (9 weeks @ #1) (1995) - Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men - "One Sweet Day" (10 weeks @ #1) (1995-96)- Donna Lewis - "I Love You Always Forever" (12 weeks @ #1) (1996) (This is the longest run at #1 on a the CHR Pop Airplay Chart that I know of, since its inception in 1992)- No Doubt - "Don't Speak" (11 weeks @ #1) (1996-97)
- Hanson - "MMMBop" (9 weeks @ #1) (1997) - Celine Dion - "My Heart Will Go On" (9 weeks @ #1) (1998) - Natalie Imbruglia - "Torn" (11 weeks @ #1) (1998)
- Santana featuring Rob Thomas - "Smooth" (9 weeks @ #1) (1999) Wow, hopefully I haven't strayed this tread too off topic! :)

"I Knew You Were Trouble" also spent 7 weeks at #1 on Billboard. I wasn't sure if you were just counting Mediabase. I think this probably hold on to #1 until end of June. It depends on how fast "Bad Blood" goes up the chart as I see that being the song to dethrone this.

OMG what will be the 100th CHR #1 this decade? Exciting to think that it's been 98 songs already, and soon to be 99!

I was counting Mediabase, but that's interesting...I didn't realize Taylor had an additional week on Billboard Airplay. I agree with you about "See You Again" likely being #1 well into June. Will be interesting to see if "Shut Up And Dance" can make a run. I don't think it'll get enough spins, but that could be a solid #2 for awhile. Reasonable possibility "See You Again" can make it to 19K spins...just not sure when that bullet will finally level off...or at least come back down to reality, lol.

Though I'm going by Casey's Top 40, which I think used R&R so I don't know how/if that differs from Mediabase. And I forgot about Don't Speak having those two extra weeks, as it occurred during the holidays, as did One Sweet Day.

I believe you're right about "The Sign" only spending 8 weeks at #1 on R&R. In April 1994, R&R changed their (for lack of a better word(s)) "airplay formula". The new version (which began effective the week of April 29, 1994) essentially coincided with Mediabase (I believe there were a few subtle differences w/ the number of reporting stations, etc). At any rate, "The Sign" spent 7 weeks at #1 on R&R from (February 26-April 8)...and then was replaced by Prince's "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" for 2 weeks (April 15 & 22). Then on the weekend of April 29-30th, R&R officially "changed their formula" and "The Sign" returned to #1 for a 8th and final week. On the Mediabase chart, "The Sign" remained at #1 for all 10 weeks during this time period (February 26-April 29). For continuity, I used Mediabase as opposed to R&R for this reason. Somewhat confusing, but that's what happened to the best of my knowledge. There used to be an AT40/Casey's Top 40 fansite that explained all this, but i couldn't find the source.

I still remember The Rembrandts "I'll Be There For You" taking only 4 weeks to reach the top. Now that was fast.

Yup, The Rembrandts went an to #1 in an incredible 4 weeks!!! 27-12-5-1 in 1995 (spending 8 weeks @ #1). Here are some other examples from the past 20 years for very fast rises to #1. I'm sure I have forgotten some, but here's a few examples... Oh and I'm only counting official weeks in the Top 40! 5 Week #1 Rises:- Ace of Base "The Sign" (27-16-9-2-1) (1994) - Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men - "One Sweet Day" (22-14-4-2-1) (1995) - Celine Dion "My Heart Will Go On" (24-11-7-2-1) (1998) - Nelly featuring Tim McGraw "Over And Over" (39-20-9-3-1) (2004) - Katy Perry - "Roar" (15-12-10-5-1) (2013) 6 Week #1 Rises: - N'SYNC "Bye Bye Bye" (35-17-10-6-4-1) (2000) - Christina Aguilera, Pink, Mya & Lil' Kim "Lady Marmalade" (22-14-10-6-4-1) (2001) - Gwen Stafani "Hollaback Girl" (37-27-16-9-2-1) (2005) - Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dogg - "California Gurls" (23-14-10-7-5-1) (2010) Again, I'm sure there are other examples...possibly quite a few other examples that I have forgotten about or missed. Definitely an impressive rise to the top for Wiz & Charlie! I can't remember another song that had a +3000 bullet for essentially it's entire run to the top.

It spent 9 weeks in total. It spent 8 in the "pre-PPW" period; its return to #1 was its 9th week. wweb.uta.edu/faculty/gghunt/charts/Songruns/Aceofbase/sign.htmOh right. That's what it was. I knew it returned to #1 for the changeover. I actually have a playlist in my iTunes that has every song to top the chart since then for R&R and then Mediabase. I think there's been like 273 #1s since then.

This will have to wait until this next week to try for the overall spins record, but on Billboard it could set a new one for them.
Their current record is 17,236 spins, set on the March 7 chart by Uptown Funk (not 17,020, Wiki - that was February 14 :) ); this was only 108 spins away from that for June 6. Even with the small gain for Mediabase this week, it's within striking distance.
