@daydrinker Kacey is very aware of the point you brought up. I saw her in concert two weeks ago, and as her intro to Biscuits she pretty much said "I realize it probably seems like I'm writing the same songs with the same message, and maybe I am, but I hope you'll stick with me through this one because I think it's an important message and I'm passionate about it." Although I see the message as somewhat different-Follow Your Arrow and this one are definitely along the same meme. But who cares? If it is a good song and sonically different I have no problem with it. After all, how many other country songs about the same old themes- lost love, revenge, pure love song, 'my roots', my patriotism etc etc are there? Some artists are very successful with the same old drinking theme (FGL) or Patriotism (Toby Keith), so I don't have a problem with a similar theme as long as it is a good song. It may hurt its chances at radio I realize (although Follow Your Arrow was probably never heard by the majority of country audiences on radio) but I'm just saying I personally don't have a problem with it.

Yes, it has a similar theme but it has anti-bullying messages and a overall theme of mind yourself. "Mind your own biscuits and the rest will be gravy."
As for the crowd sing-a-long, it's really not horrible at all. Also there's a great steel guitar solo.

Interesting. That was my first reaction, that it seemed to be the same or very very close to the message/theme from at least two of her earlier singles.
She has a good voice and a point of view, I'd like to see it on more varied material. Or at least space out her favorite theme more between singles, it verges a little to me toward lecturing which is not fun to hear on radio however well-delivered.
Between this and Follow Your Arrow, I prefer Follow Your Arrow more both musically and in how the message is put through.

I already love this. I cannot wait for an official version. I'd love to see Kacey score another hit from this, but even if she doesn't it's still great to have new music from her.

Full cover art: Check out the lyrics to the tune hereAs for this being a hit, as I said above It's definitely a more "PC" "Follow Your Arrow." However, it also has the added oomph of clever wordplay that finds her and her cowriters (Brandy and Shane) also addressing bullying and worrying about others instead of ourselves. I think radio WILL play it. It might not be a #1 or a Top 5 or even a Top 10 but it'll at least get to Top 20 and likely will be another Gold-selling single for Kacey.

NOTE: It's the small player box below the large pictures that we can also scroll through. Yes, I got mixed up there for a few minutes. ETA: Hardly a surprise, but I dig this. And echo the sentiment that it'd sure be nice if this hit for her.

Studio version sounds excellent, this needs to be a hit for country radio IMO. The chorus is really catchy, and it's quite radio friendly, but still sounds very original while sounding like a slight throwback all at the same time. I can't wait to see how well this sells once it hits iTunes. I won't be buying any bulls**t that radio gives to us this time as to why they won't play this song: there's nothing offensive about it whatsoever.

Yeah, this is outstanding. Love the melody/lyrics. Kacey Musgraves is so damn talented. By FAR AND AWAY, my favorite current female country artist. Not even remotely close. But yeah...this is way too country/old school sounding. Radio won't play this, but I sure will.

Decent enough song. But I swear if I hear Shane use "crazy" as a noun again I am going to scream. This is the third or fourth song he has done it in:
run and hide your crazy keep their crazy hidden hide your own crazy
enough. the cool has worn off!

Well, I like this quite a bit. "Trailer Song" will remain my favorite Kacey song to date, and this one shares the message of that tune, but in a non-caustic way. I can agree with those noticing a design similarity between "Biscuits" and "Follow Your Arrow" -- the verses rely on binary opposites to deliver observations, and then the chorus encourages the listener to take various affirmative actions. From the standpoint of personal preference, I do think that Kacey needs to be careful about overusing the set-up/punchline structure in her verses, because it loses its power when it is predictable. But "Biscuits" uses that design with efficiency, and I do appreciate that Kacey (with Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally) isn't recycling imagery from song to song. As much as I enjoy Kacey's snarky side, "Biscuits" has a really engaging and affirmative warmth to it, and the lack of eye-rolling in the lyrics may help listeners to connect with her. Moreover, the message of the song seems likely to resonate with those who like to push back against the "judgy-ness" of modern Internet times. It may also be somewhat of a canny move to send a song that recalls "Follow Your Arrow" in structure and melody to country radio. I think (well, more to the point, this 2013 Billboard article indicated) that country radio programmers quite liked "Follow Your Arrow," but felt that it pushed the envelope too much for their listeners. "Biscuits" gives them the opportunity to play something with somewhat similar hit qualities (since we know, based on "Follow Your Arrow"'s sales, that it was a hit, airplay or not) without the references to topics that might set some of their listeners off (i.e., *STAGE WHISPERS* "the gay thing" or "the pot thing"). Well, at least "smoke your own smoke" gives programmers plausible deniability on the latter. And we know that programmers like little more than hits that feel familiar, so perhaps the fact that "Biscuits" isn't a big departure from what is arguably Kacey's signature song to date will facilitate radio pick-up out of the gate. From the Kacey live performance posted, I was struck by her improvement as a vocalist -- her voice sounds richer to me. I don't hear that as much in the studio recording (thanks to matty005 for the link), where her voice even sounds a tad tinny on the first verse, but she still sounds good. I could have done with a simpler approach to the vocal line on the song -- going from a big singalong to a harmony (and then back) in the chorus feels a bit fussier than the song needs (frankly, Kacey's voice and perhaps a light harmony was all that I needed), but the instrumentation sounds absolutely terrific and refreshingly country. The arrangement really has the light-hearted feel that a song like this needs. So I'll be rooting for this one pretty hard. I think that it's likely to do its job for Kacey whether or not country radio supports it to a high peak, but it would of course be nice if country radio did get on board for a successful chart run.

I'm hoping that Country radio finally listens to the GP and actually pushes her hard this era. It's clear people are into her. Critically, she won Best Country Album and Best Country Song at the Grammys last year, and commercially, she's sent "Merry Go 'Round" Platinum, Same Trailer... Gold, and even sent "Follow Your Arrow" Gold despite it missing the Top 40 on Country radio entirely. Hop on the damn train, Country radio.
The lyricism on this is quick, cute, quirky, and likable, and even if it bares a striking resemblance to "Follow Your Arrow", is that such a bad thing? That song kicks ass, too. I'm here for it.

I don't love this, but maybe it will grow on me.
It's catchy, quirky, and purely "Kacey," which is a good thing for me.
I've had a love/hate relationship with "Follow Your Arrow," but I like this infinitely better than FYA on first listen.
I don't see radio jumping on this, but I'd like to be proven wrong.

I was kinda hoping she'd come back with something more modern and instant. It makes me nervous that country radio has barely played her. Idk about this one.

It's a great song but it feels like it would have fit right in on her first album. I love her debut so it's not a complaint, I'm just interested to see if she shows any growth or different sounds on the album, because where this song is great, it just sounds to me like I've heard it before.
Would be very refreshing to hear on radio and like everything else from her, I'll be rooting for it.

LOVE the production of the studio version, its a little more fast-paced than what Kacey had on her debut and the sing-a-longs give it more of a fun vibe (which takes away from any possible perceived "preachiness"), and it's so COUNTRY!! Excuse my excitement, but you don't hear that everyday...

I like this a lot. It's similar in theme to "Trailer Song" and "Follow Your Arrow", but in no way is it too similar, at least in my opinion. I hope country radio treats it properly.

Pleasantly surprised to see this surface already on Billboard; comes in at #56, good for the week's Hot Shot Debut. And her adds date is still a week away! (Had to double check that to make sure she hadn't gone already and I just wasn't paying attention... ) Hopefully this is a sign of better things to come...

39 adds. :) Pretty good start. Anything above 40 would have been great IMO, so 1 shy is fine by me. It did help that Drake White and Striking Matches were the only competition this week. BTW: I'm sure the breakfast treats that All Access will be delivering to Mercury Nashville's office will include biscuits. ;)
