Wow. Some have better digital sales than I thought they had. One example is Emerson Drive's "Moments." That single has sold more than their album has!
The good news about digital sales is that I'm almost certain that artists make more money from digital sales than they do from album sales.

The good news about digital sales is that I'm almost certain that artists make more money from digital sales than they do from album sales. From what I've heard artists only make between 5 to 10 cents (depending on the artist) per digital song sold versus around 1 dollar (depending on the artist) for each album sold.

Well, I did forget about the prices. Most albums cost around $12 or so (it depends) while a digital song costs around $1 (depends), so you could be right. I do think, though, that an artist makes a higher percentage from the downloads than from an album purchase. Forget what I said then.

It would be nice if "Moments" gave Emerson Drive either a digital gold single or a gold album. Will keep my fingers crossed.
Thanks for the numbers! I've been wanting to know those for a while now. Hopefully the CD sales keep going up.

79 18 CHESNEY*KENNY NEVER WANTED NOTHING MORE 44,207 220 13,810 59,254 I'm surprised that the single sales weren't higher considering the ridiculous airplay this song has gotten so far. Hmm....this may validate my suspicion.

Hmm....this may validate my suspicion. What may validate you suspicion and what is your suspicion? Those sales are great for a country song!!! It has only being released for a 1 week and 1/2 to I-tunes and didn't get any promo that it was released on I-tunes until a couples days after it was released. It's #25 on I-tunes Main Chart right now. Other country songs that have more airplay haven't had a week with 44,000 sales!!! Country songs don't sell that well digitally compared to other genres.

It has only being released for a 1 week and 1/2 to I-tunes and didn't get any promo that it was released on I-tunes until a couples days after it was released. It's #25 on I-tunes Main Chart right now. Other country songs that have more airplay haven't had a week with 44,000 sales!!! I know the song has only been available on i-tunes for a week--I was refering to the first week d/l for the song. With a superstar such as Kenny Chesney, typically this would be the week with the most d/l's if they are anything like album sales, which I have reason to believe they are. He may have 1 week with more d/l's, but we'll see what his final tabulation is. I guess I was also suprised that there were only 44,000 d/l's because for a board that is overall lukewarm on ol' KC, people really seem to love this song and are claiming it's "one of his best hits to date". However, Tim's "Last Dollar" began with over 53,000 d/l's out of the gate. This, for a song that was trashed to no end by the members of this board. Also consider that Tim's song was released to i-tunes the week his album was released. Kenny's album has yet to be released. The 325k+ people who bought Tim's album the week it came out probably didn't also d/l the song the same week (maybe some did, but that would be a waste of a buck). Right now, the only way to legally obtain Kenny's new song is to d/l it, which is another reason why I would have thought the d/l's would be higher. My suspicion is that "Never Wanted Nothin' More" is not as earth-shattering as radio is making it out to be. Carrie/Flatts' songs get a ridiculous amount of d/l's and I don't think Kenny's audience is that much different than the juggernaut that is UnderFlatts. However, this is all just speculation on my part, we'll see how it all plays out. After all, someone here did say that d/l's were a true indicator of the "actual popularity" of a song. I believe that to a certain extent. More on that theory some other time. ;)

Rascal Flatts and Carrie have had songs cross over to other genres, which brings in a whole different audience than the country audience. I don't believe Kenny has ever had a song cross over to another genre. That's a huge reason why Rascal Flatts and Carrie get more downloads, especially since some of their songs have had success on the pop chart. The pop audience is much more likely to download a song than the country audience.

Well...I don't totally disagree, wamufan, especially as "Never Wanted Nothing More" seems to have trended down somewhat on iTunes...but I -would- submit that McGraw's first-week digital numbers were helped by the fact that the song was released digitally the week the album was released. After all, McGraw would have had first-week TV, print, internet and radio activity to promote the release of the album, and presumably, that would boost downloads. Chesney, by contrast, had only airplay and an iTunes ad (I think? I know there wasn't one at first but for some reason I thought that changed).
Also, a difference of 9K downloads in the first week isn't really that big when you consider that there was a significant difference in the size of audience the two songs were reaching when they were released to iTunes. "Last Dollar" was #1 at the time, if I'm not mistaken, while "Never Wanted Nothing More" ended its first week on iTunes at #9 on Billboard/R&R (right?).
When you look at songs that get pop airplay, it's not at all uncommon for a song to have its highest single week of sales well after its debut on iTunes. Not if there are "suppressed" downloads, as happened with Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie" or Rihanna's "Umbrella," whose releases were delayed 'til deep into the songs' airplay runs. But sometimes a song starts to catch on the download audience as it gains airplay, resulting in week after week of steady sales that add up to a gold or platinum digital single.
I can see arguing that Chesney, as a superstar, should have had a big first week, but at the same time, let's see how he holds up as the weeks go by. Carrie's J,TTW crossed a million in downloads despite no pop airplay, and its first week of sales was nowhere near its best. Some big country hits do draw a lot of downloads, but others either spawn album sales more than downloads or just don't seem to strike a chord with the iTunes audience. I don't see enough data out there yet to be persuaded that this is always a reflection of the artist.

Billboard:
• The first half of 2007 closed with the sales week ending July 1. Through mid-year, only six albums had sold more than 1 million copies: Daughtry's debut, "Daughtry" (1.7 million); Norah Jones' "Not Too Late" (1.4 million); Akon's "Konvicted" (1.3 million); Linkin Park's "Minutes to Midnight" (1.2 million); Carrie Underwood's tireless 2005 release "Some Hearts" (1.1 million); and Robin Thicke's "The Evolution of Robin Thicke" (he surpasses the million mark by 18,000 units). All told, 26 albums sold more than 500,000 in 2007's first half. Only 98 albums surpassed 250,000 ... To compare, in the first half of 2006, 16 albums shifted more than 1 million units, while 45 releases sold in excess of 500,000 and 123 did more than 250,000 ... This year's biggest newcomer, at least in terms of album sales, is Amy Winehouse. Her "Back to Black" is the year's 16th-biggest seller, with 759,000. ... • Looking at the bigger picture, through the week ending July 1, 230 million total albums were sold, of which, 10% -- 23.5 million -- were digital. At the same point in 2006, we had shifted 271 million albums, with the digital format accounting for 5% -- 15 million -- of the overall total ... As for overall digital track sales, 417 million were sold in the first half of 2007, a 49% increase over the 281 million sold in the first six months of 2006.

I would agree that Kenny's audience is not as "pop" as UnderFlatts. But judging strictly by the airplay of the "Never Wanted Nothing More" so far, this is looking to be as big of a country hit as anything UnderFlatts has had. we'll see if NWNM even receives a third of the d/l's that some of UnderFlatts' songs have gotten, though.

You make some good points dudleyvillas. ...but I -would- submit that McGraw's first-week digital numbers were helped by the fact that the song was released digitally the week the album was released. After all, McGraw would have had first-week TV, print, internet and radio activity to promote the release of the album, and presumably, that would boost downloads. I would argue that most if not all of this promotion is for his album release, not his i-tunes d/l. Also, since McGraw is one of the established superstars with a track record of great albums, I would have to think that many people would choose to buy the album over the single and certainly not both at the same time. I mean there were probably people who thought "oh, he's album is coming out, maybe I can d/l the song too." But what about the people who would have d/l the song before the album came out if they could have, but then said, "well, I might as well just buy the album now." I just don't see how releasing the single to i-tunes the same week as the album is released would have an overall positive affect on d/l's. The album is, in effect, competition with the i-tunes d/l. Also, a difference of 9K downloads in the first week isn't really that big when you consider... It could have been 9 more d/l's for all I care. I was surprised that Kenny didn't have 1.5 times as many, like upwards of 75,000 or so. that there was a significant difference in the size of audience the two songs were reaching when they were released to iTunes. "Last Dollar" was #1 at the time, if I'm not mistaken, while "Never Wanted Nothing More" ended its first week on iTunes at #9 on Billboard/R&R (right?). Right. Yes, this would be an advantage for "Last Dollar". Good point here. When you look at songs that get pop airplay, it's not at all uncommon for a song to have its highest single week of sales well after its debut on iTunes. Will "Never Wanted Nothing More" be a song that receives significant pop airplay? ??? I can see arguing that Chesney, as a superstar, should have had a big first week, but at the same time, let's see how he holds up as the weeks go by. Well, it's down to 28,000 or so this week. I presume this song will hit #1 before the album is released. The only chance this song has to top its first week sales is the window of time between its peak popularity and the album release date. After that, I would bet d/l's will drop off significantly unless this song goes on to be a smash at pop radio. I guess all I'm getting it is that this song is already in the top 3 after a little over a month. That is an extremely rare feat these days, one reserved for the "Song of the Half Decades" (i.e. Where Were You When The World..., Live Like You Were Dying, etc.). I would expect d/l's for such a song to be through the roof, but by my calculation, they're not.

I just don't see how releasing the single to i-tunes the same week as the album is released would have an overall positive affect on d/l's. The album is, in effect, competition with the i-tunes d/l. Typically, downloads for the lead single increase the week of the album's release. This is evident with pop releases. I wish I had more country figures to bolster my point, but here's one: Week ending 24 June 2007 (the week that 5th Gear was released): Brad Paisley, "Ticks": 23,217 (+31% from 17,777 the previous week) I know that Miranda Lambert's "Famous in a Small Town" shot up the iTunes Country chart the week of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend's release, but I don't think I have exact numbers to show the magnitude of its sales increase. Will "Never Wanted Nothing More" be a song that receives significant pop airplay? ??? No...I brought up pop releases as a possible analogy -- my thought was that since pop airplay has been known to sustain downloads at a steady rate, it's possible that country airplay will do the same. Maybe. Though as you point out with NWNM, perhaps not. I think Taylor Swift's performance on digital downloads, album sales, and radio callout might give us some relevant insight. "Teardrops on My Guitar"'s digital downloads have been holding steadily in the 20-30K weekly range since April, long before the song was a hit on country radio (and it hasn't been getting pop airplay). That's a really strong performance for a country single, and maybe an even more surprising one considering that the song hasn't been placing in the top-10 on various callout indicators. During the same period, Taylor Swift's album sales have been on the rise, as well. One thing this suggests to me is the possible disparity between the audience whose response is tested by these callout services and the downloading audience. Taylor Swift has attracted a fair amount of attention for her myspace activity, and arguably, that's a younger demo than the 25-54 year olds being surveyed for callout response. That's also a demo that might be more likely to purchase a digital download, at least for now. So to bring this back to Chesney, maybe it's a simple matter of fanbase demographics. Very few country radio hits seem to spawn massive downloads. Perhaps it's that the ones that do spawn massive downloads are the ones that appeal to a slightly younger demo and maybe, given the retrospective nature of the song, NWNM is a song that is appealing to a crowd that is slightly less inclined to download than the crowd that liked "The Last Dollar (Fly Away)."

To site an example, I was back home and overheard my close to 5 year old niece on her bicycle singing THE LAST DOLLAR (FLY AWAY). When I asked her about that she said it was her favorite song. Her parents can't afford to purchase music and don't have internet access to download so as soon as I got back I downloaded the song for her... she was SO HAPPY when she got the song to play anytime she wants. How many other situations are like this -- the little girls at the end singing resonated with a lot of little girls out there IMO.
