The $12M for Faith seems to indicate that those Forbes numbers are for the 2007 calendar year period, or even for mid-2006 to mid-2007. Looks like Forbes just makes variations of lists... I saw that $12M for the list for top female artists and then now top country artists, published several months apart beginning the end of 2007. ( ETA: Just saw the full article and the list is indeed based on 2007 figures) Anyway, that's beside the point. The list supposedly measures total gross from all revenue streams and not just concert ticket sales. Plus, if the list uses the same parameters as the previous lists I've seen, it's really adding up everything, prior to deductions. So from the gross of album sales alone, RF and Tim are already ahead of Kenny. Uh, I don't even know what point I'm making, duh! Back to the topic of concerts... I always find concert ticket sales interesting. For instance, Dierks has been touted as the next male superstar since as far back as 2005 and if I remember correctly, he's been aiming to eventually be a concert monster like Kenny. Yet his ticket sales are far from impressive. A sampling: Average gross: $72K Average attendance: 2,300 Zero (out of 8) sellouts He has radio play, hype, awards and prestigious nominations, Opry membership, good looks, huge and unique opportunities (playing Bonnaroo)... and he still can't sell a lot of tickets. Just interesting stuff, these ticket sales.

Another interesting tidbit, if things proceed as they are, Carrie looks set to take over Martina's title as the #1 solo female touring act. Last year, Martina averaged 5,100 ticket sales. This year:
Average attendance: 4,700 Average gross: $224,000 Zero (out of 5) sellouts
On the other (Carrie) hand,
Average attendance: 6,600 Average gross: $315,000 16 (out of 18) sellouts

For as many records as Sugarland has sold in the last 2-3 years, they still aren't that big a draw on tour.
Carrie is doing really well. No surprise there. She's talented, beautiful, and has more PR/expsoure in a few years than most superstars get in a lifetime.
Interesting numbers about Dierk. Somehow all the pieces just haven't come together for him in record or ticket sales. I wonder how much longer he'll be a label priority.

WOW, Gretchen Wilson's numbers are incredibly low! That's not even half the tix. But then again I wouldn't pay $100 to see her either.

Way to go, Dolly! And I'm surprised at how well the headlining show from Taylor Swift did.

Here is Pollstar's 2008 Midyear report of the top 100 tours. For country: Artist / Gross in millions 1. Kenny Chesney 35.3 2. Rascal Flatts 25.4 3. Keith Urban/ Carrie Underwood 18.5 4. George Strait 18.0 5. Eagles 15.8 6. Tim McGraw 14.2 7. Carrie Underwood 12.3 8. Brad Paisley 9.4 9. "Rowdy Frynds" Lynyrd Sknyrd/ Hank Williams Jr. 8.5 10. Reba McEntire/ Kelly Clarkson 7.5 11. Robert Plant and Alison Krauss 5.4 12. Anne Murray 4.7 13. Brooks & Dunn/ Alan Jackson 4.5 14. Martina McBride 3.9 15. Garth Brooks 3.8 16. Trace Adkins 3.8 17. Big & Rich 3.2 18. Dolly Parton 3.0 I'm not completely sure if the Eagles, Lynyrd Sknyrd/ Hank Wlliams Jr., Robert Plant/Alison Krauss and Anne Murray tours will officially be classified as country. I included them anyway.

Look at Carrie up with the big boys.
I wonder how many shows/attendees these numbers represent. I'm surprised Reba/Kelly are that high with only 15 shows.

I wonder how many shows/attendees these numbers represent. I can't help with the number of shows across the board, but since Pollstar lists average ticket prices for each tour, here's a rundown of the estimated total number of people to which each of the country tours played (I just divided the rounded tour gross by the average ticket price for each tour): ETA: And just to prove what an imperfect measure this is, Pollstar notes that Kenny Chesney is the only act other than Bon Jovi to have sold more than 500K tickets in the first half of 2008, despite what I get when dividing the tour gross by the ticket price.Kenny Chesney: 468,916 Rascal Flatts: 393,372 Keith Urban/Carrie Underwood: 276,988 George Strait: 280,987 The Eagles: 120,675 Tim McGraw: 288,618 Carrie Underwood: 255,717 Larry the Cable Guy: 214,012 Brad Paisley: 228,100 Lynyrd Skynyrd/Hank, Williams, Jr.: 142,905 Reba McEntire/Kelly Clarkson: 139,457 Robert Plant/Alison Krauss: 95,541 Anne Murray: 85,688 Brooks & Dunn/Alan Jackson: 48,507 Martina McBride: 75,173 Garth Brooks: 96,717 Trace Adkins: 84,784 Big & Rich: 54,054 Dolly Parton: 42,626 And here is an interesting NY Times article about the Pollstar numbers. I've excerpted comments on the potential impact of the state of the economy, and a paragraph about country acts (that doesn't really add any new information):

:o at Tim's numbers! A few things: (a) Faith deserves more credit than she got for the record-breaking Soul2Soul tour; (b) Did Tim's tour have a corporate sponsor? 'Coz otherwise, Live Nation just lost a LOT of money on him; (c) No wonder the tour wasn't extended; and (d) I'm guessing Tim won't be up for consideration for a 360 deal anytime soon.

Is it possible that some of those amphitheaters have big lawns and the lawn seats are the ones that didn't sell a lot? It's difficult to believe that his attendance numbers were really that low, although I guess it's possible with the way the economy is right now.

I think it's great and hopefully a sign of other things to slow for him.

2 Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, Sammy Hagar, LeAnn Rimes, Gary Allan Gillette Stadium Foxboro, Mass. July 26, 2008 $5,274,364 57,394 / 57,394 1 / 1 $104.50, $79.50, $49.50 New England Country Music Festival/The Messina Group/AEG Live 16 Tim McGraw, Jason Aldean, Halfway To Hazard Comcast Center Mansfield, Mass. June 7, 2008 $975,728 18,279 / 19,507 1 / 0 $62, $32 Live Nation I was at both of these. :) I knew there were over 50,000 people at Kenny's Gillette show, but I didn't realize it was so close to 60,000. I'm thinking there weren't 57,000+ people the last 3 years at Gillette even though all those shows were sold out too, but I could be wrong.

:o at Martina's numbers, but not unexpected. Her previous batch of numbers showed an average of 4,700-per-show attendance, already down from last year's 5,100. I was expecting that she would scale down the venues for the next leg of her tour and was extremely surprised to find out she was doing amphitheaters. What made her/her team/promoter think that they could fill those up?? I know she's been gunning for EOTY and is trying to prove she's deserving, but these just make her concert-audience-drawing power look even worse. To think that these amphitheater venues allow for ticket promos for the lawn section, made very noticeable here by the low gross. And I have to ask again, as I did for Tim, does Martina have a corporate sponsor? 'Coz unless she's lowered her $250,000 guarantee or changed the terms of her contract to percentage basis, this tour really isn't doing too good.

Two questions:
1. I thought the numbers were total sold, and total capacity, but I noticed the total capacity is different at Nissan Pavillion in Bristow, VA for the Brad Paisley show and the Tim McGraw show. So, capacity is not always the same? They decide to make available different numbers of tickets at the same pavilion for different shows? I mean I can see that at an arena where maybe the stage blocks the behind stage seats and they don't sell them, but I can't see why these numbers would be different. I think this place has the same set-up for all shows.
2. It's interesting that the MD/DC/VA area seems to draw almost capacity, but in PA one of those shows was very low attendance. I know the economy is in the toilet but interesting that certain areas of the country are still filling up these shows.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Maryland :)
Anyway, despite Martina's lackluster sales...is there a possibility she could still get an EotY nom? I would love for both her and Carrie to get nominated together :)
