Expected numbers for Kelly but still kind of disappointing given that she released 3 successful records in 3 years not too long ago. Heartbeat Song is far from a hit, at least for now, but I thought she was past the point of needing a hit to sell decent numbers (by decent I mean ~100k in pure sales). I don't think she's less popular than she was during the release of Stronger; it's just that people are less aware that she has new material out this time around as, as mentioned before, the lead single is still trying to find its way into the charts. I haven't checked the album out yet so I don't know if it's good but I'm sure it'll have legs just like her last 3 releases.

The numbers kind of suck for Kelly, but honestly I'm just hoping she lands in the Top 3. All her studio albums will have placed in the Top 3 if that happens. :)
I do agree that they need to get to work to make sure this album has legs. Excited to see where this project goes next.

Right.
HBS is far from the top 10 single hits preceding her albums such as MI, MKIA, MLWS, BA, (even NA made top 10), but it's doing quite well for MOST artists' standards. It will make at least top 30 next Thursday's BB 100 charts, if not top 25, which I guess qualifies as a hit.

Kelly's opening numbers ARE disappointing. With the fact that Kelly, her fanbase, her label and her management were finally working fairly fluidly and consistently for her last three projects (Stronger, GH:C1, Wrapped In Red), there was absolute cause to expect her to have a a fanbase that could clear 100k for her in her opening week. I mean what else is the benefit/result of her winning Grammy's, releasing Greatest Hits' and experimenting with genres albums if it wasn't to solidify her presence as a major recording artist with a loyal following for the future? Obviously what was working in the last three instances has clearly not been working to quite that effect this time (so far, anyway). Not to mention the playing field has changed in her personal life. It's clear that in order for the stars to align for Kelly, she needs a large radio presence, a promotional onslaught with her firing on all cylinders, an inciting factor (that commercial for What Doesn't Kill You, the Christmas commercials etc.). None of which there has really been here. Heartbeat Song should have been met with a CHR deal, iTunes banner and promo blitz. I know people have to be realistic about what artists command what kind of budget, but RCA must have known things in Kelly's personal life have changed, that it has been a minute since she's released anything, and that given the right combination of promotional outlets she can catch fire. A Q1 release from someone with a solid but dormant fanbase, with an artist who'd priorities have shifted, and an image issue is an uphill struggle to start with. With Kelly, the promotional plan needs to be surgical, and it feels a bit like this time around it was a little nonchalant. That said, the market is not to blame. We've seen big, solid openings for lots of artists that are on the same level as Kelly. Like I say, artists ten years in the game are all about the right mix of circumstances, and it's clear the Piece By Piece project hasn't been met with those. No I don't think there's been enough promotion, no I don't think what promotion that did came came early enough, yes I think her image has affected the narrative, no I don't blame the market. Maybe even had it had the right rollout, we must blame Heartbeat Song too for not connecting with the American public so far. So what next? See how Heartbeat Song goes over the next week and if its fortunes don't change, DON'T hang about. Roll out the second single and get to work. Cause that's what it's going to take to make this whole situation work now.
I liked almost everything about your post. The only difference is I would probably wait a little longer for HBS (it is making good headway on HAC and AC lately), but I'm sure RCA will be monitoring album sales and determine soon if HBS is going to sell the album.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6487814/kelly-clarksons-piece-by-piece-big-debutKelly Clarkson's 'Piece By Piece' Poised for Big Chart DebutBy Keith Caulfield | March 04, 2015 8:40 PM EST Kelly Clarkson's new album Piece By Piece is set to earn the highest debut on next week's Billboard 200 chart. Industry sources suggest the album, which was released March 3 through RCA Records, might move around 90,000 album equivalent units in the week ending March 8. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Billboard 200's top 10 will be revealed on Wednesday, March 11. It's too early to tell if Clarkson will debut at No. 1, as the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack might stand in its way. In the week ending March 1, the Fifty Shades album earned 108,000 units (down just 35 percent from the week previous). Even if Clarkson doesn't start at No. 1, a top 10 start is essentially a lock. It would give the pop star her seventh top 10 effort. All five of her previous studio sets have reached the top three rungs, while she collected another top 10 with the Christmas album Wrapped in Red (debuting and peaking at No. 3). Other albums on course for significant debuts on the next Billboard 200 including Brandi Carlile's The Firewatcher's Daughter (with perhaps 30,000 units) and Third Day's Lead Us Back: Songs of Worship (25,000 units).

And the pattern continues, three pages of nothing. It would be expected, no less that it will continue and we will have to search for "actual" numbers this week. Goodness.

Or Triple-S for short.
Unless you prefer S3 or S-cubed (or even scubed).

Well the fact its not selling great might be a blessing you know with the s**t that has been selling the most in Q4 of 2014. I'm not a numbers girl I would much rather discuss the actual music but its still capable of being a gold record. I'm not a Kelly stan or a fan but so far her singles have been good quality so that bodes well for the album. Now just shake, shake shake it off and sleep knowing god gave you talent and voice and because god is good he helped the less fortunate with sales! and singles that have the shelf life of a opened carton of milk!

Disappointing sales for Kelly but expected nonetheless. Hopefully the album will have some legs. Kelly's 2nd single always smashes I Do Not Hook Up?

Until this week, she's been virtually silent. There's been no pre-release hype whatsoever and it's too quiet for a Kelly Clarkson release. Aside from having radio hits, he's always done well with performances and promo before an album drops and that's been missing.

Since she's been super visible this week on endless major media shows, I'm really hoping somehow the predicted #s go up a bit and get that news from Billboard/Hits Daily tomorrow or over the wkd. (which is def. not unusual). If the #1 album only sold 108k and drops enough and Kelly gains enough she def. has a shot at #1. Gut is telling me it may be a nail biter.

If I didn't frequent on Pulse I literally wouldn't know she's releasing a new album, so her numbers don't surprise me. I'm sure she'll get a ballad to become a hit somehow so she can have some steady sales beyond the first week though.

$15 at the store today. For a time period where wages are not picking up that seems very expensive to me. I expect HBS will be her last solo hit of her career, and the album will struggle to pass 250,000. I hope she has duets in her future. She relies on producers for her hits and obviously they didn't deliver. If the right singles had been chosen, I'd be very happy with her career. Little to complain about from me.

It's a typical price for a CD? It's cheaper on iTunes. No one is forcing you to buy it. Two days after release and her career is over. Yeesh.

Ariana's album last fall was priced at $17.99 at Target for the regular version. I literally thought I was in the 90s shopping at Coconuts.
