Will Michelle Branch ever be relevant in the music world again? It's been 8 years since we saw the Wreckers and 12 since her last solo hit. What do you think?

If The Wreckers made a comeback, probably so. I could see a possibility. Specially with a record as strong as Leave the Pieces.
As a solo artist? Absolutely not.

No, and I'll forever be mad about it. I can't believe she (well, her label) hasn't been able to release a full solo studio album since Hotel Paper almost twelve years ago. :/

Hotel Paper slays lives. "Game of Love" best song in 2002 hands down!

I think it has been too long now. She is a low-key JoJo to me. How on earth has she not released a cd in that many years??

Her situation is definitely strange and I feel like had she followed up Hotel Paper with something in 2005, she could have gotten even bigger and probably had an impact on music after that. We might have been spared Avril's The Best Damn Thing because Michelle would have made pop music slightly too classy for that.
I can't see her having any sort of an impact now outside of the type of impact someone like Lisa Loeb or Paula Cole. She could still get articles written about her and have decent enough showing for album sales but no chart hits outside of AAA.

Nope. She had a song with Timbaland a few years ago and it was cringe worthy awful. None of her recent material can be as great as her old stuff. She has gone the ways of Mandy Moore etc.Her time has passed.

We might have been spared Avril's The Best Damn Thing because Michelle would have made pop music slightly too classy for that. Considering that Michelle was never even close to a quarterhalf as big as Avril at their respective peaks, I doubt that would have happened. I think ultimately she would have been buried by the Dr. Luke wave (Kelly, Avril, Katy, etc.) as acts like her began making more stylized records, but she could have gotten another successful project in the mid-00s. As for now though, she's better off trying to launch a career writing for others.

The Wreckers were so fucking good; I'll forever be mad that they didn't give us a second album. She won't make a comeback as a solo artist, which is a damn shame.

She's been gone long enough that she could make waves with a comeback tied to a new sound, but sadly I don't see that happening.

I could see her making somewhat of a comeback if she were to do a solo country album that has a really good lead single and she manages to crack Top 40 at country radio. But I'm not sure if that really counts as a comeback...

Anyway, no...she's finished, and has been for years.

She had a couple big hits from her first album and then one big hit from her second (plus the song with Santana). It's not like she would have been coming off a major album if she were to have released a third. I think her career would have gone the way of Vanessa Carlton's if she kept releasing albums.

I always forget that Michelle wasn't as big as I thought she was. She went double platinum and platinum, which is great, but I always place her closer in my head to Kelly Clarkson and Avril, both of whom outsold all of the albums she sold with one cd, not even considering their other multi-platinum efforts.

Does she still tour at least? No; she's played a couple one-off shows, but no tour; she was also doing a cooking show at one point. She was writing with Kacey Musgraves (among other people) last year, I think, but who knows what became of that. I'm not sure the full West Coast Time album has leaked yet either, but several tracks did; she also released (through SoundCloud) a cover of Radiohead's "Creep" that was used on the CBS show Stalker. ETA: Oh, and she separated from her husband last year.

Maybe that's more wishful thinking on my part but she was definitely recognizable and had that name recognition. Vanessa Carlton didn't have that. Though I do think you could be right about the Dr. Luke thing. Michelle did try with Timbaland and failed miserably, and that was after the country music period. It's strange because a lot of the singles and album-kickoff-attempts she made after the Wreckers were quite good or decent at worst. It's not like they were all horrible.

Wasn't Vanessa already flopping with her second album? She didn't have any big hits from it as far as I remember. Maybe Michelle would've had a career a la Colbie Caillat or Sara Bareilles or Gavin DeGraw. I mean, they never had another "Bubbly"/"Love Song"/"I Don't Want To Be", but remained Hot AC staples with an occasional pop crossover.

I was saying I think they would have been in similar boats by the mid-to late-00s.

Hardly a hit.

I mean, does she even want to be? quote from an angry message she posted on her forum years ago: "I would give nothing more than to play music in a ****ty bar and fold clothes at The Gap for a living. My "being famous" has done nothing but ruin my relationship with my parents"
