New peak of Number 6 on Hot 100 Great news! With the song now declining on both HAC and Pop, however, next week will probably be her last chance to make it into the top 5. I'm not optimistic, but she will have a chance, especially since she performed last night on the Teen Choice Awards. If only she could have reached higher than #8 on CHR...

Performing on The Today Show tomorrow morning should give it a nice boost

Another boost incoming: Cumulus block moves it into power rotation this week.

This boost could be the thing that boosts her into the Top 5 of the Hot 100.

Another boost incoming: Cumulus block moves it into power rotation this week. I'm no even a fan of the song but she deserves it. Radio is being too harsh with her and it's annoying watching other artist getting great updates based on name or label push while she is struggling. Yes she is top 10, but any artist with her sales (and being pop of course) would be in the top 5 for sure

This is a situation similar to "Home", "Let Her Go", and "Say Something". Those songs all were digital smashes and were chart-toppers on Hot AC but struggled in the bottom half of the CHR top 10. "Fight Song" should be in the top 3 right now.

This has a rather high negative though. It's hitting hard with certain crowds, but there is a lot of dislike for it as well, hence the ceiling. The buying crowd and radio crowd don't perfectly overlap.

The buying crowd and radio crowd don't perfectly overlap. Budapest had excelent callout scores and radio stopped playing iranyway. The callout scores seems more an excuse to do whatever they want, because there are some song (of big stars) with awful callout scores that end being big hits anyway. Frankly, at some point it seems the labels push is way more important that if people like the song or not.

this song is cheesy to the max. It's like a modern day "A Moment Like This".

"Fight Song" should be in the top 3 right now. But why is there an objection to something being a "Hot AC/AC hit" first and foremost? Trap Queen sold a little bit better than Fight Song, was very much part of the zeitgeist and clearly had some appeal to pop audiences, but no one really complained that it was bigger on rhythmic and urban than it was at pop. For some reason, I feel like we often forget to see Hot AC as a separate format with its own taste -- but it is. Fight Song is an undoubtedly great, radio-friendly song -- but it does feel a bit "vanilla" and "safe" compared to the majority of pop smashes (hence - Hot AC). That it's Top 10 speaks to the fact that pop programmers couldn't deny its universal impact and popularity, but I don't think it necessarily needs to go Top 3.

I guess the argument that I always get into is what about it makes it "vanilla" "safe" (and not a word you used, but many others have) "basic"? that's strictly an opinion. Also, why does 'hence Hot AC' have to equal vanilla and safe either? It's a genre, and many primarily AC artists are labeled "vanilla" instantly by CHR/Pop fans. It is frustrating.

HAC is generally regarded as the format for white suburban soccer moms; with that, it's "vanilla" by definition.
It's also why some CHR acts transition into HAC/AC acts later on as the generation that grew up on them loses their taste or desire for edge and transitions into a more domestic and structured lifestyle. There was period when Kelly Clarkson ruled pop radio and was considered "cool", but those people aren't the base for CHR these days, they've moved to HAC. Conversely, it's also been a while since Kelly Clarkson would be considered cool by a majority, but (until very very recently) she's continued to enjoy very strong HAC success.
This song is pretty much Lifetime cranked to the max, so it's not too surprising that it's getting a rather strong pushback. Its sales performance is a large exception to how songs like this do, but that doesn't mean that the majority of those people are tuning into pop radio. None of this is to deny that this is a major success, it has hit hard, but that doesn't mean it hit hard with the pop audience.

Why is this back up to #8 on iTunes? She performed a duet performance of this song with a 16-year-old cancer survivor during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Why is this back up to #8 on iTunes? (#5 now) Probably a mixture of her singing it with a cancer survivor on Ellen and with her album being available to pre-order it on iTunes today.
