I need to avoid this thread because I get depressed coming in. Pretty sure if Ciara were singing "Good For You" and Selena NOmez had the privilege of showing up in the studio to record this, that crap would sound much better but still be flopping... while "Dance" would be in the top 5 on the Hot 100 right now despite sounding worse. But... that's a tale as old as time anyway!

allow that I hate you for putting that idea in my mind now. >:( Ciara would have killed on Good For You, which in itself is actually a solid song, just brought down by the mannequin that's singing it. But apparently people are really into mannequins these days so what do I know.

One thing about Ci in her career is many times she's worked with a producer before others but their work doesn't come out. Her and Hit-Boy have records dating back to the Evolution era when he was living in Atl signed to Polow and they get shelved. Just thought of it because he co produced "GFY"

I'm annoyed that she has Pop songs on the album that would have worked for radio in 2010/2011. Instead she was forced then to cater to the Urban crowd who has paid her dust since The Evolution.

She even had that duet with Enrique in 2009 that smashed so many places globally but was never pushed to Pop, because, why again? She wasn't supposed to be marketed as pop act or some bullshit? As for "Dance Like..." itself I still think it sounds more suited to Urban than Pop radio, and I think it would have done better than "I Bet" as a lead.

I wouldn't say Urban has paid her dust. She's had hit records at Urban radio for every album she's ever released but she's also had some of her shittiest songs released as followup singles to those hits since The Evolution. Gimme Dat? Like A Surgeon? Work? All the false starts from the One Woman Army project? Even though she isn't treated like a staple as she should be, Ciara has done really well at radio considering how many out-and-out flops she's released there. It's misguided to blame R&B fans for not supporting her, when Ciara's team f**ks up every release she has and does nothing to regain the ground she lost after Flop Albums 1 and 2. If she had released Basic Instinct right as Ride was hitting and followed up with something stronger than the two duds they chose to push, I think her career would be in a much different place.
As far as this song, it's good but I'm not surprised it's struggling at radio.

I think the straw that really broke the camel's back was when they nixed the original BI release date (it was going to come out the same week as Katy Perry and Fantasia in August). I remember being so bewildered that they pushed it back as the single was taking off. Had they kept that date, and had another strong R&B single of Ride-level caliber, or close to it, she would have at the very least, appeared to have recovered from the FR mess and would have had some momentum going forward. She may have had a chance at a pop hit too (I really don't see the point of Turn It Up otherwise).

Fuck Urban radio. This is way better than 90% of the garbage they play.

I think the camel's back was broken before BI. I believe it started to go down hill when they ditched High Price for Never Ever / Go Girl / LSM. She led The Evolution with a midtempo which was successful but didn't do anything on POP. Then launches her next album with Go Girl and when that doesn't stick she throws out another midtempo. When Never Ever doesn't cross over they decide to release LSM, NE was done on urban and they had nothing on urban radio when FR came out. Fantasy Ride kind of did her in, the whole Like A Surgeon / not releasing Work was also a mess.
That whole era ... :/

"Never Ever" was a Top 10 hit. That wasn't the problem. "High Price"' would have flopped so hard.
"Sweat" would have smashed.
The problem is this format sucks. And they show favoritism. If Ciara doesn't have a rapper or singing about sex they won't play the song.

^ did you bother to read my post, I didn't say NE was the problem. The problem was NE had peaked and she didn't have a song on urban radio when FR was released, her core format. High Price never got released so we can't assume it's fate, and it was 10x hotter than Go Girl, plus with Luda it would have gotten at least some spins.
What does Sweat have to do with any of this. lol
But I do agree this format sucks!

The problem is this format sucks. And they show favoritism. If Ciara doesn't have a rapper or singing about sex they won't play the song. Agreed, but the problem is Ciara has a lot of damn problems, the music more often than not being the least of them. I was talking to a friend about this a few days ago and I pointed out that the biggest issue is that Ciara does not have a team that is on the same page as she is...It's easy to dismiss Future as being full of bitter grapes in that interview where he was saying she shouldn't have been trying to make all those pop records when that isn't what her "fans" want to hear; but the reality is he was kind of speaking for what industry people in urban think about her. It seems like everyone surrounding her believes she she should just give up on pop, whereas Ciara wants nothing more than to be the multi-format artist that she once was. So she goes out of her way to pay for these songs that she must believe have pop potential, only to be roadblocked by her own label and whoever else she is working with. They have taken a crossover artist and told her she can't/shouldn't want to cross over. Not that it is a guarantee that she'd be a priority somewhere else, but I feel that her potential is always going to be majorly stunted as long as she continues to stay with the same people (aside from her current management, who as far as I can tell is doing as much as possible). Urban already kind of feels biased against her anyway, but on top of that if feels like ever since 2011 there has been an unspoken rule that unless your name is Beyonce or Rihanna, no female r&b singer is allowed to have more than one urban hit from her album. So she's caught up in that web too. (We can nitpick what were wrong or right single choices all day long but when you can rattle off a whole list of people who fall under this - Ciara, Monica, Brandy, Keyshia, Tinashe, Jhene, Kelly, Fantasia, etc. it's clear that there is a major problem here that goes way beyond them individually.) If Ciara had released this first, it would have likely been her one hit, and then whatever she followed it up with would struggle. I also think she never really overcame whatever went down in 2007-08 when she changed teams. Ciara seems like a nice enough person but I think she got taken in by and followed the wrong people and that really damaged her relationships and reputation with the people who matter. It's tiring being a Ciara fan, really. What makes it worth it to keep rooting for her is her own optimism...she never lets anyone see her down and remains bubbly and cheerful when asked about what she'd like to do next/where she sees her career in the next five years. With an attitude like that it's no wonder she's managed to tough it out.

She's def been very mishandled but sometimes when you see Ciara interviews it's clear she's as confused as anybody else and this long into a carer you have to be in some sort of artistic control. Now her singles ear sometimes has been great while other times its been eeeeeeekkkkkk. That being said for multiple eras now when you are seeing songs having adds dates, single covers being released, promo single cds being sent to the top radios and djs and the artist sometimes doesn't even seem to know or is aware thats frightening cause if the product isn't assured then there is no way the consumer has a clear understanding of whats going on. Now with the whole "pop" thing, I feel Ciara makes some really great Top 40 records but still to this day none of them have seen a pop adds date nor a video been shot. That being said I'm really not disappointed with the Jackie era at all and maybe thats just me. I can't say Urban isn't here for her when she released a pure r&b lead single and it did well on Urban. I do think that some of the big urban stations have clearly done her wrong including her hometown but today V103 and Power 105 added the song. It's not even so much the music to me, I think its a disconnection with an audience. I don't think everyone who ran out and copped the Evolution and sent it platinum in 5 weeks no longer cares about her I just think some people are confused. Ciara through bad eras and all still holds a place in the top tier of performers and her name stays in conversation with the top tier. I think it would be great if she got back on her feature game like she did between Goodies and The Evolution. As far as the teams and damaged relationships, i think thats more of a LA/Atlanta thing in general. I think people in the A thought she would come right back and always live there and I feel like if she wouldn't have moved that many of the opportunities that she's had would not have even existed because from branding ATL/LA are just so very different. I think during the Lloyd situation even though he apologized he put a damaging bug in peoples ear. Its like a rumor in high school, you start to try to pay more attention to how someone moves once you've heard something about them. So you see her with Kim K(even though Kim could be the sweetest girl in the world) and it's like "Oh, she moved to LA and now she's Hollywood". The hood girls can't relate to Kim. Bey can hang with Gwenyth because her brand allows her to move how she pleases and you don't see paparazzi photos of them consistently like you did Ci and Kim. The incident with Chilli in Las Vegas as well. If you've come up with people and y'all been going down the same path and all of a sudden you kind of go left and they still going right even if you are the same person they will start to see you differently just because you are no longer going where they were going; especially BLACK PEOPLE(I love us but thats just the truth). And we live in a society now where people love the Ratchet, people want to see you turn up on a bish no questions asked. While Ci wanted to take the high road with her baby father, he said no sir this album coming out and I'm bout to ACT and only after that did she respond on twitter but even then she didn't really GOOOOOOO like I'm sure she could. You go to Ci's social networks and she has you feeling uplifted and positive and just in a good space but thats not what people want in 2015. Whether you want to record Funk,Disco,Rap,Top 40, Jazz, Alternative, Rock or whatever you choose once its recorded and put on an album for mass consumption you have to atleast give the songs you believe in a chance. If you gotta give out some free music then hey do that. When she was going to do the B.I. mixtape, people were interested because her remixes were dope and all of them were getting radio spins. Get out there and do some pop up free shows. Go meet some fans. I really feel like she's afraid of doing a reality show but something like Nickis documentary would be great for her especially following some of this second leg of the Jackie tour. All in all she's had a good career and I feel she can still accomplish so much more.

^At least it made it.
cynthia's piece about Urban/Rhythmic female artists who aren't Bey/Rih/Nicki (my addition) being ignored by radio this decade rings so true.
