Thanks for the tag, @drag27.
This doesn't hold a candle to "PrimeTime" or generally speaking the bulk of her work. I'm sadly not really fully loving this as much as I was hoping to. I give credit to some of the clever wordplay in this, but the production of this is a little generic and dated. The sound trying to be achieved is understandable. However, this still misses the mark a wee bit.

I'm torn. On the one hand I am not even going to pretend I don't love the sound of this. On the other hand, is this not essentially what we were hoping Rihanna would come back with?
It's smashy material, I just think a lot of people are going to struggle with the idea of Janelle being the one giving it to us.

I see this as more of a vehicle to promote Jidenna than anything else. Classic Man was a good start for him but there's obviously more of a market for Janelle than Jidenna. I don't necessarily see this as a problematic release for Janelle either.

"So get off my areola" I'd say it's a fall from grace, I'd say it's awful, selling-out garbage, I'd say I'm so disappointed that a genius of Janelle's level has been reduced to recording Talk That Talk rejects instead of continuing to serve smart, innovative R&B... ...but it is pretty hot. And if a lot of underperforming singles haven't hurt her career, a hit won't hurt, either. |

Outside of the singing that is occurring I woulld have assumed this was a Rihanna track. The production is hot but no thanks ma'am I have come to accept Riri for who she is but I refuse people climbing down the ladder and reducing themselves to that...

 I have only recently gotten into the fabulousness that is Janelle. I am screaming at the ridiculousness of some of the lyrics. "Baby bend over, let your booty do the yoga" I didn't know that one's booty could perform the downward dog and the Parivrtta Janu Sirsana without the rest of the body doing something else too. #YouLearnSomethingNewEveryday What the hell is "get off my areola"? Is it a reference to this meme? I just can't. The vocals are good. I'll give her that. But I just cannot get into the song because of the lyrics. She's treading into "Cookie" and "Marry The Pussy" territory. It's unsettling given the brilliance of her last record. The production is mushad and jejune. It's so Garageband circa 2002. Maybe she's just throwing a Jidenna a bone and saving all the good lyrics and productions for her own record. |

It wasn’t meant to be clever. It’s more of stating the obvious. She has had a lot of buzz and promo but for some reason she cant breakthrough at radio even with some really catchy songs with big campaigns (tightrope, Dace Apocalyptic) that should’ve been huge at pop radio. If those songs had been released by someone else and got the promo they did, they would’ve been huge. I wont even state the obvious reason why they didn’t work for her though.

I get why everyone is calling this trash, but why are musical geniuses like Janelle not allowed to make a bop like this every now and then if she wants to? This song is hot, and I love Janelle, so I'm definitely excited to see if this can be a hit.
