Also, is All Time Low's pure sales opening higher than that if Sia's "1000 Forms of Fear"? She opened with 52k. They're looking at 10k more than that. Thanks

Because album sales have dropped as they have through the years, that's why Billboard added that other info- to pump up the numbers some. And we're seeing the same information used- albeit counting differently- on both the BB 200 and Hot 100. How long until Billboard incorporates album-sales info into the Hot 100? After all, the tracks are being sold to consumers, so why not, right? Whether it's regarded as an "official" chart or not (HITS places emphasis on the sales chart, as that's what appears on its homepage), Top Album Sales remains a viable chart, especially for an act that hasn't previously scored a No. 1 album (or a top 10 album, whatever the case may be). If ATL's album sells the most copies this week, the band and label certainly should tout that ATL has the top-selling album in the country (as was the case with Madonna's Rebel Heart). And, yes, I absolutely would be saying the same thing had RH had more album-equivalent points than Empire in their debut week.

But didn't you only start saying so after RH happened when it wasn't the first instance of it happening?

Just a reminder that the first instance was when 1989 was at #1 and the latest NOW compilation was at #2 (but was the top selling album). Next week will be the third instance.

Michael Jackson's Number Ones was the first album not to top BB200 when being top selling album in the country.

mike- I hadn't noticed that Now was No. 1 on Top Album Sales (until someone mentioned it a few weeks back). Plus, that's a Various Artists title.
spoil- indeed- that's why I have an asterisk for MJ's No. 1 albums count, as well. :)

Michael Jackson's Number Ones was the first album not to top BB200 when being top selling album in the country. Not quite. A mid 00s Walmart -exclusive Garth Brooks box set has that honor
Michael Jackson's album was the second

^Sales numbers were not reported for that release, though, correct? Hence it not appearing on Comprehensive Albums.

The Comprehensive Albums was only covering Soundscan data, not all released albums.
A lack of appearance on the comprehensive chart does not mean it was not the biggest seller of the week.
Although numbers were not released, it was the biggest seller in Walmart history to that point. Not hard to figure out that it likely outsold the competition that week too.

^That is true- it very may well have outsold other albums that week (though it look like it was released on a Friday- and that was Thanksgiving week), but there are no official sales numbers because Wal-Mart opted not to release figures. We could go back and forth on it, so let's just agree that there are two ways of looking at it. ;)

Regardless of the final numbers, "official #1" "Confessions on a Dance Floor" was around 350K . You are correct HG, because it wasn't printed in the magazine and not acknowledged by Billboard as #1, did it happen? There are two "histories" here and therefore two ways of looking at it, I suppose. (If you recall, it was this and the Eagles album 2 years later that prompted a rule change about exclusives in the "official" chart)
Garth Brooks’ Box Set Biggest Seller Ever for Wal-Mart Posted on December 1, 2005 by ANDPOP Staff
www.andpop.com/2005/12/01/garth-brooks-box-set-biggest-seller-ever-for-wal-mart/
Fans were lined up outside Wal-Mart at 5 a.m. last Friday to propel Garth Brooks: The Limited Series box set to gold status in its first day on sale.
Wal-Mart announced on Tuesday that the box set has become the top selling music item in the company’s history after only three days on store shelves. It sold 500,000 copies in the first day at a special price of $25 US.
“Garth Brooks? fan appeal is tremendous,” Wal-Mart merchandise vice-president David Porter said in a statement. “It doesn?t get much better than this for Garth fans. And since this is a limited series set, once it?s gone; it?s gone … And it?s going fast.”
Brooks announced the release of The Limited Series on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” earlier in November, and pre-orders for the set reached record-breaking levels according to Wal-Mart.com.
Garth Brooks: The Limited Series boxed set includes five CDs, including a Lost Sessions CD with 11 previously unreleased recordings, and a 90 minute all-access DVD

^ The week that would have reflected Brooks' debut sales was the Dec. 10, 2005 chart- the No. 1 that week was System Of A Down's Hypnotize, with 320,000 and change. :)

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6531467/all-time-low-future-hearts-highest-chartAll Time Low Set for All-Time High on the ChartsBy Keith Caulfield | April 10, 2015 3:44 PM EDT Rock band All Time Low is set for its best week ever on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Industry forecasters suggest the group’s new Future Hearts album could sell more than 65,000 copies in the week ending April 12 -- earning the band its best sales week ever. The set’s overall equivalent album unit total should surpass 70,000. That latter figure could place the Hopeless Records release at a career-high No. 2 on the Billboard 200, when its new top 10 is revealed Wednesday, April 15. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). All Time Low’s previous best sales week came when 2009’s Nothing Personal debuted and peaked at No. 4 with 63,000 sold in its first week, according to Nielsen Music. That No. 4 rank was the highest chart placing for the group, which has since logged two further top 10s with 2011’s Dirty Work (peaking at No. 6) and 2012’s Don’t Panic (No. 6). Ahead of All Time Low on next week’s Billboard 200 chart will likely be the Furious 7 soundtrack. The multi-artist album should move over 85,000 in overall units (maybe even more) and should easily jump to No. 1. It’s currently No. 2 on the list dated April 18, after vaulting from No. 15 the previous week. If Furious 7 hits No. 1 on the Billboard 200, it will mark the fourth No. 1 soundtrack in the past year. It would follow Frozen (which ruled for 13 nonconsecutive weeks from Jan. 18, 2014, through May 17), Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 (Aug. 23-30, 2014) and the Empire TV soundtrack (March 28, 2015). The Furious 7 album is driven in part by its hit single “See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa, featuring Charlie Puth. It was the best-selling song in the week ending April 5 (168,000 downloads; up 488 percent) and its sales are expected to rise dramatically in the week ending April 12.

What is Vance Joy's cumulative at right now? He's sold fairly well considering he has only had 1 mediocre performing single, but he has been helped alot by the label discounting the album to $5 or $6 pretty much since it was released.
