I knew the Mendes kid would open big. I guess he's the next big thing on the teen scene. Let's just see if radio will give him a hit now that he sold an impressive amount of albums without them so far. That just shows the power of marketing through social media.
Reba, that's awesome for her. I still can't get over how she opened with over 300K during her "Duets" era. I was dreaming that would happen again with this, but 60K is nothing to sneeze at either for a 60 y/o legend that radio barely touches the way they used to.

I believe about 70K of the Mendes sales were pre-orders. That alone is impressive for sure (as is the 100K total), but he's going to need some airplay. And fast.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6531900/shawn-mendes-handwritten-number-one-albumShawn Mendes Album On Course for No. 1 Debut on Billboard 200 ChartBy Keith Caulfield | April 15, 2015 8:34 PM EDT Vine superstar-turned-major label recording artist Shawn Mendes is aiming for a No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 albums chart next week. The 16-year-old singer released his debut full-length album Handwritten on April 14 through Island Records. Industry forecasters suggest the set could move over 100,000 equivalent album units in the week ending April 19. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Billboard 200’s top 10 will be revealed on Wednesday, April 22. Mendes previously charted with a self-titled EP, which debuted and peaked at No. 5 in 2014, selling 48,000 copies in its first week (according to Nielsen Music). The only likely other contender for the No. 1 slot next week is the chart’s current champ, the Furious 7 soundtrack. It finished the April 12 tracking week with 111,000 units (up 51 percent). Other albums heading for high debuts next week include Tyler, the Creator’s Cherry Bomb and Reba McEntire’s Love Somebody (with both aiming for around 60,000 units).

I dont really get what the draw for Shawn Mendes is. His music is pretty boring, even for the emo teen set that he appeals to.

He must have some star power quality because this first era singles are a mess i didn't watch from a supposed profitable artist since Adam Lambert's first era (and i'm talking about the mess of the release not about the singles itselves, in fact Life of the party is an interesting song and Something big is a typical teen song)

I like the album so far, even though I have to say it's a bit boring here and there. And that's coming from a Coldplay fan.

Pretty great numbers for Reba, considering the lack of airplay this time around. I'd love to see her have some longevity and get a gold album out of this.

First time I heard of Shawn Mendes was when I saw him at Jingle Ball in December. The girls love him.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6531903/reba-mcentire-ninth-top-10-albumReba McEntire Heading for Ninth Top 10 Album on Billboard 200 ChartBy Keith Caulfield | April 17, 2015 10:00 AM EDT Country superstar Reba McEntire is heading for her ninth top 10 album on the Billboard 200 chart. Industry forecasters suggest the diva’s latest release, Love Somebody, could move more than 60,000 equivalent album units in the week ending April 19. That could place it in the top 10 of the new Billboard 200 chart, which will be revealed on Wednesday, April 22. Love Somebody is the first album release for Nash Icon Music, which signed McEntire to a recording deal last year. Nash Icon is a joint venture between Big Machine Label Group and Cumulus Media. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). McEntire’s last album, 2010’s All the Women I Am, debuted and peaked at No. 7 and sold 64,000 copies in its first week (according to Nielsen Music). She’s topped the list twice previously, in 2007 with Reba Duets, and 2009 with Keep On Loving You. Love Somebody should also start at No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart, giving the entertainer her 12th chart-topper on that list. Her first leader came back in 1986 with Whoever’s In New England.

I'm surprised by just how high his numbers are, but not surprised that Shawn Mendes is opening strong. Nothing about him personally really appeals to me, but they found a very specific niche for him, which isn't easy to do, so good on that.

I'm actually surprised Shawn's streaming numbers aren't more than forecasted. Most of his numbers are pure sales! Pretty cool for an Internet sensation.

Any word on Young Thug's potential numbers? "Barter 6" is currently #1 on iTunes.

Maybe seeing that the kid is really able to sell albums, the label improve their game and give a single a proper and decent release. It's curious how such low key teen was able to do what a lot of others with supposely more marketable looks and music failed to do in recent years.
And it's too soon to predict a career of a 16 yo, but i think he has potential to grow, the fact that he seems to feel nearer of Ed Sheeran than Justin Bieber or One Direction at least gives hopes that he will be able to grow at the same time that his fanbase

This kid grew up super close to where I live now. Not a fan of his music but it's always great to see a Canadian kid get a shot at international success.

Really impressed with the empire soundtrack holding up so well over a month after the season finale...already crossing 300k in sales..might just be able to go gold ..which is great for a hip hop soundtrack.

How are album sales looking vs. 2014 so far? I feel like Q1 has been stronger this year.
