Back with another discussion question!
Most of us have described a song as "the perfect pop song" before. Some that I've heard include Toxic, Dancing Queen, We Found Love, etc. What are some of the best examples that deserve this label, in your opinion? List as many as you'd like, and explain if you want!

For me a "perfect" pop song is one that is constructed really well in terms of its melody and structure, and it of course has to be catchy. Some examples:
Hanson - MMMBop
Katy Perry - Teenage Dream
Beach Boys - Good Vibrations
Mariah Carey - Dreamlover, All I Want For Christmas Is You, Fantasy, Always Be My Baby, Heartbreaker, We Belong Together
Britney Spears - Baby One More Time, You Drive Me Crazy, Toxic
Jackson 5 - I Want You Back
Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe
Beyonce - Crazy In Love, Irreplaceable
Backstreet Boys - I Want It That Way
The Beatles - I Want To Hold Your Hand, A Hard Day's Night, Help!
Lady Gaga - Poker Face, Bad Romance
The Righteous Brothers - You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling
BBMak - Back Here Baby
Miguel/Mariah Carey - #Beautiful

I somehow forgot Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble." Janet Jackson's "Escapade" would be another one. And Madonna's "True Blue."
I am surprised more of you haven't picked out "Always Be My Baby" for Mariah. That's probably her best melody.

I call Let Go by Avril Lavigne the perfect pop album so I guess anything from that.

The first one that comes to mind for me is probably not a very popular choice, but: "Catch My Breath" by Kelly Clarkson.

First thing to come to mind. What "pop" as a genre (when people usually think of it) in itself really is is a rock/rock n roll song with the edges and heavier elements removed so the songwriting can shine without distraction.
There's of course a multitude of ways to incorporate the influence of different genres but at the bare bones it's this.

Recent-ish examples that spring to mind are
"Bad Romance" by Lady Gaga "Teenage Dream" by Katy Perry "Latch" by Disclosure & Sam Smith "Toxic" by Britney Spears "Hey Ya!" by OutKast "I Want It That Way" by Backstreet Boys "Since U Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson "Blind" by Hercules and Love Affair "Umbrella" by Rihanna & JAY Z "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley "Someone Like You" by Adele "All I Want For Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey "Dancing on my Own" by Robyn "MMMBOP" by Hanson
Looking at the 80s... every single off of Thriller and some off Off the Wall and Bad by Michael Jackson "Papa Don't Preach" and "Like A Prayer" by Madonna "When Doves Cry" by Prince "Freedom 90" by George Michael "Take On Me" by A-Ha "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel "Hungry Like the Wolf" by Duran Duran

For me, the "perfect pop song" is equateable to "pure pop." If a song borrows too many elements from one or more different genres, then it's no longer a "perfect pop song" as it's no longer a pop song, it's a song that borrows elements from many genres. Those can still be perfect, just not perfect pop.
Some recent examples that spring to mind: Selena Gomez - Love You Like a Love Song Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe Taylor Swift - Shake It Off/Blank Space Sia - Chandelier Katy Perry - pretty much most of Teenage Dream, with prime example being "Teenage Dream" and "Last Friday Night" Lady Gaga - Bad Romance

^^ couple example from the above - Erotica and Kiss - both great songs that I love, but I wouldn't call them perfect pop songs.
Like A Prayer, Teenage Dream, Toxic, Blank Space, Call Me Maybe, Umbrella, Bad Romance, a whole bunch of Max Martin and ABBA tracks... to me that's all perfect pop. Big, universal songs that few people don't enjoy or recognise to some extent as being solid pop.

To me, a "perfect pop song" is feel-good, makes you want to get up and dance or sing along, no matter how many times you've listened to it or how old it is.
Some songs I think fall into that category: Toxic - Britney Spears (interesting that so many people seem to agree on that one) Crazy in Love - Beyonce Call Me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepson We Are Young - fun. I Love It - Icona Pop Fighter - Christina Aguilera Fallin - Alicia Keys
Some older: Sweet Dreams - Eurythmics Hey Jude - The Beatles Hand in My Pocket - Alanis Morissette

"On My Own" - Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald (I think Patti and Michael are a perfect combo and the production on the song is perfection.)
