I am always a little wary of songs that have 2 rappers that fulfill the same purpose. I like Yo Gotti and am a big fan of Jeezy but I don't need them both on the same Monica record.

I always thought of After The Storm as her most pop leaning album along with The Boy Is Mine. It's got the hooky ballads ("Breaks My Heart," "Hurts The Most"), full fledged pop ("I Wrote This Song"), and Brandy-like crossover jams ("Ain't Gonna Cry No More"). I assume you mean ratchet in the sense that she raps a little on "So Gone" and "Knock, Knock"? Because even those two songs are mostly smoothed out throwback R&B aside from a few accents. To me "ratchet Mo" means songs like "Everytime Tha Beat Drop" where hip hop elements are more prominent than her singing. |

The song is not that good, it just lacks something. At least it's not her official first single.
I just love greasy, hood Monica though. I feel that's her true persona instead of the church gorl mess she gave in New Life.
She's just insecure about herself. When ETBD bombed and people bashed her for the lack of singing and overall dated snap style on that song, she took it to heart, even when The Makings of Me was an amazing album overall (minus the aforementioned mess). Then, she did just midtempos and ballads on her latest efforts and also tried to oversing on every song in an attempt to impress everyone... Then people shaded ha again because New Life was a borefest. Now she's trying to get back to her urban/ratchet sound, which I greatly appreciate.

it's very smart to release this, because worst case is that this doesn't do much of anything but it gets her back out there and keeps her looking current, helps people say "oh she's still around what's she up to?" and then the actual single can drop. best case is it that actually does something. the last time she had a big hit (Everything to me) it was coming off a successful guest spot (Trust).
