My girlfriend who liked his previous two said she thought this was his least country song and doesn't like it.
A middle aged guy I know (just a very casual fan) saw him on CMT Awards and said "he isn't country, his outfit was horrible, and he is an awful singer."
Glad it's not just me who hates this guy's music.

I wasn't too crazy about this one at first, but the more I hear it, the more I like it. The chorus keeps getting stuck in my head all the time. And minus the turntable scratching noises near the end of the song, the production at least makes an attempt to be country, something that I couldn't say of his last two. Even though I'm not fond of this guy's music being pushed to country radio, I honestly have liked all of his singles thus far and I gave Montevallo a listen for the first time the other night and it was pretty solid. I could've done without his version of "Cop Car" (Keith Urban >) and there were a few other tracks I thought were kinda meh, but I do (mostly) like his material, even if I don't particularly like the idea of categorizing it as "country."

Getting past the fact that most of his songs are not traditional country (or even country at all in some cases), I've got to say I really like Montevallo but this is probably my least favorite song on his record. It's fun and all, but I quite like how he experiments with his music and this is very "safe"... a disappointing single choice.

He'd have been 'burned at the stake" by radio/fans if he released "Break Up In A Small Town" or "Single For The Summer" right after "Take Your Time." I suspect he'll release "Break-Up" as his fourth country/2nd pop single. and MAYBE close out the album next spring/summer with "Single For The Summer" or "Ex To See." Technically, "Cop Car" was a cover by Keith Urban. It is such a personal song to Sam (he lived most of the lyrics) I'm glad he included it on his album.

I think, in context, "House Party" is a very wise choice... It's works great for the summer! I would still love to see him release "Break Up in a Small Time" as a single at some point (even tough I can't really see it working well on country radio). I think "Speakers", "Ex to See" or "Single For The Summer" would also be great choices.

Given how the radio genre's sound has changed enough to allow for him, as long as he says he's country, the genre will play him, and that song. Without needing it 'remixed' to take the louder chorus out. It's at 350k downloaded already so it's a song fans like. I'd be shocked if it wasn't a single.

Technically, "Cop Car" was a cover by Keith Urban. It is such a personal song to Sam (he lived most of the lyrics) I'm glad he included it on his album. I'm aware of what "Cop Car" is so I'm not sure why I said cover there, but I meant to say 'version' or something like that. But I still think Keith Urban did it a lot better and his was the Top 10 hit, so I personally just could've done without that on the album is all I'm saying. If I were to buy the album, it'd basically be like a 9-track album to me since I won't have much desire to listen to his "Cop Car" when I already have Keith's. As for next singles, based on my one listen of the album, I thought "Make You Miss Me" would be a great fourth single for the fall and then I'd like maybe "Ex to See" to be the fifth & final single. I thought those two were better than "Break Up" (which has no business on country radio) and "Summer."

Yeah, that word was really the only thing I had wrong there. As for the next single. "Make You Miss Me" is a great song I'd be happy with that. I could see them going six deep single wise if the label/sam really wanted to. "Break Up" would fit (for reasons I stated above). "Summer" would be a harder sell but again, I think it could work. I think "Break Up" is a single and thought it the first time I heard it live in May 2014.

His sound hasn't bothered me at all. I actually find him refreshing by how radically different he sounds from anyone else, both in lyrical content and production.
And that is probably the most blasephemous thing I've ever said on this forum.

I think it's pretty much guaranteed that "Breakup in a Small Town" will be the 4th single. It's sold 350K so far (with no airplay), and Sam's been playing it at all of the radio stations to good feedback. Although not necessarily "Country" sounding, the lyrics and imagery can't get much more "country". He's one of my favorite new artists in a long time, and has the songwriting talent to boot. Every song on Montevallo could be a single, and I like that he's shaking up the format full of "bro country" guys, even though I like all of them-Luke, Jason, Blake, etc.
BTW, "HouseParty" has a +93 today so far

I think in his case, differently from a lot of other country acts fusing different genres, it comes of very natural and genuine.

I hear everything ya'll are saying but when it comes down to it: this is just a guy who is trying to get his music out there by using the country platform. His music, his style, and his aura in no way embody what country music has been, is today, and will be in the future. I see it as just an unfortunate misuse of a vulnerable genre. This whole situation is just a big, sad joke. The thing about other new acts who pushed the boundaries, is they did it within reason. Alan Jackson brought things to a new level but he still had those country beats in there. Up, down, up, down, like out back on the wash tub. Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, and Brad Paisley took it a step further. They added new melodies and really brought the song structure to a new level. That set a bar for country music songwriting that is still followed to this day (as all three still, obviously, have a significant influence on the genre, in country gold, recurrent, and current airplay). When people like Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan came to town, they were rooted in country but again they appealed to a broad audience for many reasons. However, all of their songs had country instrumentation and makeup. Fast forward a bit to Florida Georgia Line. These guys hit it big time. But listen to their first (and even their second) album. It has dobros and country slides and it just SOUNDS country. Whether it sounds like Johnny Cash or not, their music is a country-style music. It's like Alan Jackson meets Brad Paisley meets Bocephus (meets Joey Moi). I never listened to Florida Georgia Line and thought "this spit isn't country", I just thought "hey this is different". Whether or not you like it remains to be seen. Now comes Sam Hunt. A product of one of the biggest self-made rivals country music has today: The Highway. The Highway prides itself in its "Highway Finds", the three most notable being Florida Georgia Line, Hunt, and Chase Rice. ALL of which push the boundary. Most of what The Highway plays is decided by itself, contrary to what it tells its listeners. It blatantly tries to force certain songs and artists onto listeners (and it has done a good job of gaining a rabid following). Why would it play a song like "Turn It On" so many times when it is NOT being played by terrestrial radio and it is selling dismally? It's gone recurrent yet they still spin it pretty frequently. Their obsession with Lady Antebellum, Chase Rice, Sam Hunt, Logan Mize, JT Hodges, Kelsea Ballerini, Love and Theft, Old Dominion is mind-boggling. There's no rhyme or reason to it. Which leads me to believe they are just helping out their "buddies." Along with pushing new artists to breakthrough causing a severe bottleneck of the charts (which in turn results in familiar artists who have had recent hits to have surprising trouble on the charts [George Strait, Chase Bryant, RaeLynn, Darius Rucker, Brantley Gilbert, Rascal Flatts, Lady Antebellum, Kacey Musgraves, Thompson Square, Eli Young Band, Kip Moore, Miranda Lambert]). What happens then? Artists more or less are forced to make "safer" songs (see: "Homegrown Honey" by Rucker, "Payback" by Rascal Flatts, "Freestyle" by Lady A, "Turn it On" by Eli Young Band) and the results are up in the air. The Highway, along with artists like Sam Hunt, Chase Rice, Kelsea Ballerini, Canaan Smith, Old Dominion, are turning this genre into a pop format. It's soon going to be a "what have you done for me lately" type atmosphere, where those who are still resonating with fans being safe to stay and those who are not QUICKLY burning out. No more 6 week number ones, as everyone wants to get as many songs up the charts as quickly as possible. No more 10 year top 10 streaks for the likes of Chesney, Paisley, and Urban. Sam Hunt is jumping on the latest bandwagon. He has a different style (it's called pop and R&B, by the way, for those of us country fans here on Pulse who are experiencing temporary disillusionment). There is nothing notably country about his songs. Unlike the others who pushed the boundary...he has approached the boundary, spit on it, and ran past it, mooning it as he laughs maniacally. Think about how absurd it would be if Sam name-dropped George Strait or Alan Jackson in one of his songs. For those of you who saw his performance with Dwight Yoakam, that pretty much says it all. He looks absurdly uncomfortable (not to mention, it looks like my grandma lent him her sleeping shirt and yoga pants) and plays probably one chord on the guitar the entire time. For those of you who didn't see it, please enjoy: www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQ9KH6BYiX8We've shot ourselves in the foot on this one folks, and unfortunately there's no end in sight.

Sam is also being played in every Wal-mart in the Country right now via their Axe Stage pass...saw him the other day on every TV in the store!
Also, Montevallo came out 8 months ago and is STILL in the top 10 albums on ITunes :)
Itunes all genre songs:

"Break Up In A Small Town" will most likely be a single, and probably the next one. I'm hoping they release a 5th single then because "Make You Miss Me" is a fantastic song and one of my favorites from the album. But I'd expect BUIAST to almost definitely be next due to the crazy amount its already sold as a non-single.

I actually don't care for "Break Up In A Small Town". I'd much prefer "Single for the Summer". With that said though, I'd be really surprised if they didn't push "Break Up In A Small Town" as a single. It's already had a lot of success for just an album track.

Oh, for sure. Sam Hunt sold out the very same market I was at when he did the Lipstick Graffiti tour earlier this year. He probably can sell out 5-10k arenas on his own (and will this fall after Lady A Tour). This song will be at least Gold and likely on way to platinum before his follow-up comes out.

He headlined one of the nights of Old Settlers days that I went to in Rockton, IL and it was sold out at 6K; and I'm biased, but he clearly outperformed/had a better response than Hunter H. during opening of Lady A tour.
This is sitting at #16 on mediabase currently
