Artist: Darius Rucker Single: "Southern Style" Writers: Tim James, Rivers Rutherford Album: Southern StyleLabel: Capitol Nashville Add Date: May 4th, 2015 SourceWBEE has this as their "Music Meeting Song of the Day" and that means they have been told by the label that it's the next single (much like "Stay A Little Longer" by Brothers Osborne was a few weeks back). This was the song that was rumored to be the second single all along. Almost anything would have been better than "Homegrown Honey" (IMO) and this one definitely is. I think Capitol made the right call here, waiting a little longer than normal to release the second single as the charts need some time to recede.

No doubt here. This one will do well for him. Not sure it's a number one but it'll get him into the top 10.

This is a great second single choice. I love this song. It's sort of got a modern flare, but it doesn't skew much from the more traditional sounds. This album is a very country sounding album,IMO. I am kind of curious what they could follow this up with. The album does not seem entirely made for radio (at least country radio today). But, there are several songs which I could see doing well.

Good choice. Easily the best song on the new album. I think radio will want to play this one, but I just hope the sales don't lag too much on this song. It doesn't strike me as the big digital seller type, but I could be wrong.

Meh. This is the only other song that I've heard from this album (and I haven't had the urge to actually take the time to listen to it yet) other than "Homegrown Honey". While this one is just boring and all-around bland, at least it isn't obnoxious like "Homegrown Honey" was.
I miss the Darius that we saw on his first country album... :(

I like this song and it could be a hit for him it has a nice sound to it. I just wonder if it's kinda slow for this time of the year. That's the only thing I have against it. I probably would have released me and you and my guitar next if I was him.

I think this will do well. It's slow, but at the same time it's a breezy melody, perfect for summer. I predict a Top 10 (albeit most likely slow) peak, and then segue right into "Perfect" , "Need You More" or "Baby I'm Right" for the winter months

21 adds on impact day for Darius. Not overly impressive, though I was only expecting 25-30 or so. Listening to this song, while I enjoy it much more than "Homegrown Honey" (though, almost anything would be, lol), it's definitely going to have a harder climb than "Homegrown Honey" did.

I am absolutely in love with this. This might just be my favorite Darius Rucker single to date, and I've quite enjoyed several of them (particularly "Don't Think I Don't Think About It," "This," "I Got Nothin'," and "Wagon Wheel"). Everything about this is just spot-on perfect for me though. I love, love, love the production on this (something that Darius always seems to get pretty right, if nothing else), and the melody is so strong, even stronger than "Homegrown Honey" which I also found to have a very enjoyable melody. And then the lyrics and vocals are just great, and coupled with that great country production, this is easily one of my favorite male-voiced singles out right now. I hope that it can get the ball rolling soon because I can't wait to hear this one on radio.

It's refreshing to hear him release a song like this. This sounds like a song that would have been on the radio years ago.

No posts in two months, lol. I must admit that I haven't given this one too many listens since it had been released but I just did now and this is so much better than "Homegrown Honey." Darius is right at home singing these songs. The production is really good and his vocals are great with the lyrics (don't hear oysters brought up in too many songs, lol).
"Southern Style" is up nearly 700k in audience so far this week but part of that is due to KKBQ in Houston, who have accounted for 1.2 million of Darius' total audience (1/4th of it in fact). It took a couple weeks for this to get going but hopefully this can be upgraded to medium rotation on some of the spin leaders soon. Unfortunately, I haven't heard this song once on any station I listen to yet.

Unfortunately, I haven't heard this song once on any station I listen to yet. I hear this almost daily on 98.1 KVET, which is a medium market station here in Austin. I really, really like this song and hope Darius has success with it. Like you said Darius just sounds right at home on a song like this.

I can see this one having a similar chart run to "Kiss You Tonight" or "Riot", where it'll reach top 20 then peak in the upper teens. I'd like for it to do better, but Darius doesn't seem to have a whole lot of momentum going for him. I

Great song but I'll be the one to start the what will be the next single dicussion. "Baby I'm right" is my pick, not sure if it has a shot but it seems a unique compared to his most recently material, which I think the current single accurately describes. I feel like all of his recent releases have been about southern style.

A little speculation about what singles will be released later is fine and all, but at the same time, it's way too early to be talking about what's next. This hasn't really even got going yet, so whatever comes next will probably not be for a long time yet (like probably at least 2016).

This hasn't really even got going yet, so whatever comes next will probably not be for a long time yet (like probably at least 2016). I was thinking more like, not come ever. I'm really disappointed with how slowly this has gone (dear country radio: I'm disappointed in you, but you already knew that). Unless they just say "truck it" and move on to another when this one hits ~30 weeks. Luckily it looks to be at least #40 on MB this weekend, garnering its first countdown spins. Within 3 weeks it could be as high as #35. As a couple of us here have said, this song is right up Darius' alley. I'm pretty happy with what some artists have released to radio lately. Now the ball is in radio's court to get its collective head out of its sassafras and give us some good music. At some point, these artists are going to stop caring. Just went to see Darius and he was sold out, ~20,000 people...and he always puts on a great show. So soulful, so emotional, so down-home and heart-warming.

At first listen this just sounds like a rehash of American Beautiful by the Henningsens.

At first listen this just sounds like a rehash of American Beautiful by the Henningsens. "American" and "Southern" are not the same thing and the perspectives are different, so I don't see it at all, personally. The production treatments and vocals are also very different from one another. The similarities are pretty minor, imo.

That's just my first impression. After hearing it a few times all I remember is "lazy southern girl list song number 473,289". I will grant that maybe I haven't given it my fullest attention yet so I will listen more closely the next time it comes on.

Yeah, I have given this a few more listens, and it's still doing jack squat for me. I still hear nothing but "lazy southern girl list song number 473,289". It sounds a lot better than Homegrown Honey and I'm not hearing it every time I turn on the radio as I still am with HH, but other than that it's leaving me cold.

As if we need another example of how country radio can make you shake your head, I give you "Homegrown Honey" and "Southern Style". HH at the 90 day mark had 3500 spins and 26.0 million in total MB audience, whereas SS has 1260 spins and just under 6.0 million in total MB audience...
"Southern Style" has only increased 200k in total MB audience over the past six weeks (no, seriously). It went without a bullet on this past Billboard airplay chart and was dangerously close to going without a bullet on MB as well.
This song was released during a time period where a massive amount of high profile singles were getting released, so this took a while to get going but it hasn't been doing well lately. I actually think this is easily Darius' best single since "Wagon Wheel", so it's unfortunate this one has had such a hard time getting going. Its 16 weeks old, so I'm hopeful Capitol will stick with this for a top 20 peak but the sales have been lackluster and it's having a whale of a time fighting for airplay thus far.

"Southern Style" might not amount to much more than what its already done. This song has lost 150k in total audience over the past eight weeks, which is jaw-dropping bad. The one positive lately is that Capitol was able to rally some spins with 116 over the past seven days and 67 spins the past three days, so I doubt Darius loses his bullet on MB this week. However, this one needs to start picking up now or I fear they'll pull the plug on this relatively shortly.

I wasn't expecting this one to be one of the biggest hits of the year, but I wasn't expecting this to struggle this poorly. Maybe I'm still stuck in 2010 when Darius Rucker was a consistent hit maker. This song is pretty radio friendly IMO and it shouldn't be that offensive. Shame that Darius is getting the shaft, he has one of the best voices in the business.

It's because stations are still playing Homegrown Honey 400 times a day and not giving this one any room. Or maybe that's just mine. Or maybe it's that this song is a boring lazy list song that says the same thing as 4 trillion other songs. Or all of the above.
