A new, currently-unnamed 5SOS single is coming to radio in June or July, according to Capitol's Greg Thompson (via Billboard: link).

After they released like 1,281 EPs and albums last year, I was hoping they'd take a little break. Guess they're coming back for round 2.

I don't really see what is surprising about this since it has been known they are coming with a new album soon. Anyway, I am super pumped for this because there were so many smashes from their first album!

I think One Direction is near the end of their run, but with songs like this 5SOS have zero chances to gain their throne.
The song is boring and sound dated, and frankly i think they have a problem of credibility. If you are a boy band you need to own it, the fact that they pretend (or try) to be some kind of punk rock band but are promoted like teen hearthobs don't do them any favours

I don't think they should be compared to One Direction. Their sound is completely different.

I love this song! Such a great medium of rock and pop!
Some people don't understand what a typical "Boyband" is. That is groups like 1D, BSB, NSync, 98 Degrees, Westlife, etc. They have the same thing in common. They don't play instruments, have a back up band, and are vocalists only.
5SOS are boys (well men now) who are an ACTUAL band, that play their own instruments as they sing their vocals. If you call 5SOS a boyband that term might as well apply to every band in history who play their own instruments and all their members have only penises, to be blunt.

Yeah, they're more in the vein of Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco (considering they have many of the same annoying fans) as far as that kind of stuff. Anyways, this sucks. It also has a CC deal today.

I feel that 5sos are a "real" band marketed a bit more boybandish than usual, with the whole 1D connection and the focus on all the members tbh

After a handful of plays, this is decent, but it's no She Looks So Perfect.

If you call 5SOS a boyband that term might as well apply to every band in history who play their own instruments and all their members have only penises, to be blunt. Actually that's not true. Take that played instruments and they were a boyband, and One Direction play instruments too, in fact they are not a typical boyband either, because boybands generally are at least decent dancers and OD will be unable to learn a basic choreography not even if their lives depend of that. Playing instruments and not being prefabricated (i don't know if that's the case here) doesn't help if the label only promote them to very young girls (exactly the same case with The Vamps). Bands generally have a solid boy fanbase, and i don't think that's the case with them. The songs didn't help either, because their material till now is basically boyband material with electric guitars. Even the release of their singles if followed by the paterns of teen stars, or at least is how itunes react to them. Anyway, they need better singles, because a radio deal and a good first week of sales on itunes won't make this a radio hit. If they are really a band or they want to be one, the label should make changes in the way they promote it. Maybe this way they will sell a lot more, but their shelf life will be short

This is awful. I haven't been a fan of any of their other songs so this doesn't help. The lyrics are so jejune. They're giving the girl a free pass because she's "kinda hot", I wonder what they would say if she were "extremely hot"? Perhaps that wouldn't be playable on radio until the watershed hours. Sadly, this song feels like it could be a Bro-Country one if they swapped out the electric guitars with banjo. Surprised about the cursing, isn't this a kid band? They're being edgy though!

I think "boyband" is a genre-term rather than something technical. Like how "singer/songwriter" is considered to a genre rather than a description of a singer who also happens to write songs. Lady Gaga and Mariah Carey are technically singers and songwriters, but neither would really be described as "singer/songwriters" in the same vain as, say, Jewel or Sheryl Crow. In the same way, "boyband" is a label typically given to all-male groups that cater to younger audiences. Hanson wrote and played their own instruments and they were called a boyband. BSB, N Sync, NKOTB, 1D, 5SOS, etc, etc. I've seen the Beatles referred to as the original boyband. But, despite the similarities between 5SOS and, say, Fall Out Boy, I don't think FOB have ever been referred to as a boyband.

It also has a CC deal today. So I'm annoying? >:( I never thought of 5SOS as a "boyband" until others made the comparison, and I don't get it. They're a rock band that just happen to be relatively young, the same of which could be said of FOB and P!ATD (at least in the beginning; they're not so young now.) "Boy band" I've always associated with the late 1990s craze, which frankly has had a somewhat negative connotation to me (too many similar sounding and overexposed acts back then.) I get how 1D could be labelled as such, though I like them better than the 90s boybands, maybe because there aren't umpteen soundalikes on radio. I remember rolling my eyes at the "Beatles were the first boy band" comparison.

They have a more instrumental-based sound, but everything else about them is just like a boy band, from their personalities, to their image and their marketing. Just because they play their own instruments doesn't give them a free pass from being a boy band.
