Can't remember where the convo was about other songs on the album, but Jake just periscoped some of them while he was driving in his car.
Forget what the first one was called but it was a classic Jake Owen slower mid-tempo type. The second had some rap/fast spoken words. The third was "LAX" and it's a slower ballad type and really good.

The other two were "American Love" and "LAX". He also did one before where he sung "We Went To the Beach" and "Put A Song In Your Pocket". Most of those songs sound a lot better than "Real Life" to me anyways. A little more what we expect from him I guess.

I also listened back to the periscope and thought "Where I Am" and "LAX" were very strong offerings. "LAX" should be a single but I'm afraid that country radio would shun it somewhat because it's a definite country song...steel guitar, a great story, great vocals, and interesting way of using LAX in my opinion.

So can we assume that "Real Life" was more or less to get Jake back in country radio's good graces after "Days of Gold" and "What We Ain't Got" struggled? It's a shame that that's a possibility but it makes sense from a commercial standpoint.
While I don't *hate* this song, it's just kind of "there" for me. Just another average catchy singalong song that does nothing to create a lasting impression for the artist or the fans (I feel the same way about "Crash and Burn", "Lose My Mind" and "House Party").

Beachin was a huge hit in between Days of Gold and What We Ain't Got. He was fine at radio.

Beachin was a huge hit in between Days of Gold and What We Ain't Got. He was fine at radio. This is true, but his last era was a step down from the four #1 hits of the one that preceded it in terms of success. He'd probably rather have another Barefoot Blue Jean era than one that shapes up like his last.

Definitely think "LAX" is single material. I think ":) KUFan" is right in that country radio might shun it. Its a shame thats the case because what is it they want? He definitely has a mix of stuff in his catalogue and it seems nothing can please the country music community or country radio.
To ".indulgecountry" I think Days of Gold was a great record and he finally got a headlining tour. To me there is more to music than #1 hits and what radio likes. I definitely think he doesn't care about #1 hits as we have seen with some of his songs.

Oh wow! This is a bad time for country couples! :o One right after the other. So sad to see this happening to anyone, let alone it almost seeming like it's a trend right now. :(

This song has been struggling lately. It could just be because the new A-list debuts from Tim and Luke had to steal spins from somewhere, but doubt is already settling in now about wether this can be a future #1. Up until 2 weeks ago it was certainly looking that way, but now the label is going to have some work to do. Anyone know how the callout scores for this one have been?

Anyone know how the callout scores for this one have been? They're pretty bad. On Mediabase, where bro-country/'metropolitan' country songs fare better, this has the second lowest positive %, second highest negative % (only behind Girl Crush), lowest net-positive %, and one of the lowest favorite %. It faired a bit better on Bullseye Callout and Radiofeedback (though strongly dislike % is still quite high). So yeah, as a whole, callout scores are quite bad for this.

I'm also surprised at how confident Jake was about this song before its release, saying that everyone was going to love it hands down. Maybe he thinks everyone likes overproduced Sublime and Weezer?
Sounds very similar to how TBP are talking about their new song

After only 11 weeks on the airplay chart, there has been a clear downward trend in audience gains for "Real Life" recently (here are the past 6 weeks):
+ 2.320 million + 1.160 million + 1.143 million + 1.390 million + 0.892 million + 0.494 million
Any thoughts on what will happen over the next few weeks with the promotion of "Real Life"? If the downard trend in audience gains is due to listener dislike (which leads to less frequent radio spins, one would think), can throwing more money into promotion change things and buy a hit?

The good news is it's still selling consistently well, anywhere from low 80's to mid 60's on iTunes all genre chart. The bad news is that might not be enough if the callout scores are so rough, just see "Like A Wrecking Ball" for example, which is selling even better and still can't crack the top 10. Apparently rap influences are okay with today's listeners, but not 90's rock bands such as Sublime. Country radio sucks sometimes.

Country isn't exactly stuck to its roots very well and people seem to be open to rap and pop influences in the music so why not some rock, funk etc. I think its a solid attempt at shaking things up a bit. How is it when Luke Bryan puts out trash(my opinion) like "Kick the Dust Up", country radio eats it up yet "Real Life" doesn't do it? I guess I just have too much hope in the general country listener.

A better example of country radio sucking would be the failure of songs like "Better Than You Left Me" or "Country" than something like this, lol. It's refreshing that the callout scores for this are so negative; I wish we'd see more of that for this type of genre-bending material on country radio.
Besides, this song has made the Top 20 so it's still done pretty well so if this brickwalls sometime soon, I don't think it'd be seen as a failure. "Little Red Wagon" sold well but it was a polarizing song on radio and it came up shy of the Top 15, for another recent example. "Real Life" had a pretty smooth, fast ride up the charts despite the callout scores being so negative, so I think it'd be totally fair of country radio to be hesitant to continue that trend for this song.

The difference is Jake and Miranda's songs are both selling well, whereas "Country" and "Better Than You Left Me" never really took off. Grant it, Jake and Miranda have a much bigger advantage, but I'm not really trying to say those songs got what they deserved either. As a big Jake Owen fan, it frustrates me that radio will spin the hell out of "Young & Crazy" which may not scare anybody off, but won't bring anyone in either. I know it's brought up and discussed a lot on Pulse, but Country radio's unwillingness to take chances/risks on certain songs baffle me, especially when some of the music they're already playing is risky and genre-bending itself. I could vent for hours about this, but I'll save my breath. I'm just hoping "Real Life" can squeak into the Top 10 still somehow just so Jake won't suffer a lower sales week when his album comes out. It's really frustrating seeing Jake take so many risks that just aren't working out (Days of Gold, What We Ain't Got, and now this one). I know it's not all bad, but it's almost as if radio is telling him "please give us some schlock like Frankie Ballard and Brett Eldredge are making".

I feel like Jake Owen has done nothing but be a follower. I'm always amazed when an Artist has success with a single like "Barefoot Blue Jean Night", that they don't go back and recut anything else from the writers of that song. Same thing with Miranda Lambert "House That Built Me". She never went back and cut another song by those writers. Just something that bugs me. I wouldn't be surprised to find Jake Owen totally irrelevant in 3 years.

The reason I'm personally hard on this song is because it sounds horrible. The idea for the song I like a lot in regards to what many people do on a day to day basis in their "real life", but this song gets the point across, in such an obnoxious and grating way that it's impossible for me to enjoy it. Jake's got a great voice but it's flat out wasted on tracks like this and "Beachin'." It's not even the non-country melody and instrumentation that puts me off the most, it's the horrendous vocal arrangement that makes Jake sound like he's trying to compensate for lack of a good voice which couldn't be further from the truth.

Yeah, I just think this song is awful and I don't think this is a "risk" worth taking that radio should be rewarding. It's already done far better than I think it should have, regardless of if it's sold decently. It's not like Jake Owen always gets the shaft or something because he's had a decent string of hits, but this one is just too far outside the box, and he doesn't have to record faceless music like Frankie Ballard either: He had a big era with 4 #1 hits just a few years ago and all of those were songs that were far better choices for country radio than anything he's released since.

This song has definitely slowed down, drastically. "Real Life" has increased just 140 spins and 800k in audience the past 13 days on MB, and Jake has only gained 30 spins and 150k in audience this week (one day left on the MB chart). Both FGL and Cole Swindell leaped Jake this week and unless Jake can re-pass them (which I doubt), "Real Life" will fall one spot to #17 this week; Dan + Shay are dangerously close to Jake's song as well. This song's MB audience gains the past four weeks have gone 1.8 million -- 1.1 million -- 670k -- 150k.
When I first heard this song, one of my first reactions was that this could be destined to die in the teens, and while we aren't there yet, this chart run is exactly what singles that die in the teens do. The sales have been great, which is the only think keeping this song going. I knew this was going to be a boom or bust pick when it first came out and the sales and call-out scores are what most would have predicted. It looks like I'm not alone with not liking this one. There hasn't been a release date set yet for Jake's album, so I'm sure RCA and Sony will move heaven and earth to get this song as high as possible.

Song jumps up 9 spaces in one week and still doesn't make Top 10. That's the kind of chart run you would've usually seen only in 1993.

My fault, as I ignore his name and music intentionally, but this song is a pleasant surprise. Loving this! It's very different...nice stretch of different music out there right now between this, Thomas Rhett and the Band Perry.

This song is officially struggling. "Real Life" lost 24 spins and 230k in audience today and has lost audience 5 out of the past 12 days, and has gained just 200k in total MB audience over that time span. In fact Jake hasn't gotten more than roughly 200k in audience in a one day update once, in the month of August.
I'm unsure where the end game is for "Real Life" but all I know is that it isn't looking good right now.

Hope that he learns from this misstep and goes back to the sweet spot he found with the Barefoot Blue Jean Night album that he for some odd reason decided to ditch.
