Rihanna and Kanye seem like likely candidates.

Whoever decided to come up with this "feud" is genius.

Whoever decided to come up with this "feud" is genius. Taylor now has a number one smash out of it and it looks like Katy wants one as well. So, yeah, whether it's all a ploy or not, it sure seems to be helping! Not like either of them really needed it, but still!

If this 1984 song ends up being released and gets a video, I doubt it'll be the lead single for the new album. I see this as being more of a one-off to keep her name out there while the 'feud' is still fresh.

Katy's publishing company is through ASCAP and there's no sign of 1984 in their database.

My feelings are mixed on the PRISM era. On one hand, PRISM had two of the biggest hits of Katy's career. Dark Horse is Katy's biggest hit by pretty much any definition. While Roar isn't quite up there, I could see the case for it being her third largest hit. Its impossible to call the era a failure. What the era lacked was consistency. When Roar and Dark Horse were smashing up the charts, it was almost as if it were the Teenage Dream era all over again. But there was also Unconditionally, Birthday, and This is How We Do, and during those singles magic was gone. Its clear that mistakes were made, and that Katy & her team were out of synch with the public for much of PRISM. Something that stands out to me was comments from Katy about how surprised they were that Dark Horse was such a hit. What's surprising to me is that the team that was constantly on point during the TD era could miss such an obvious hit.If I remember what she said correctly, Dark Horse was an experiment, a 'wouldn't it be cool if we did this' moment. Maybe Katy needs more of that next era. if i'm not mistaken, doesn't she have a new team than what was present for the TD era?

In regards to this '1984' song/Taylor issue, I'm surprised she hasn't commented on it? All she's done is had a rep say something and retweeted a Billboard article. Seems a little shady to me?

Urgh at this whole 'let's get back at Taylor!' thing. Katy, just... don't. I honestly don't think Madonna could or would get involved if this is happening. Since Madonna featured Taylor in a performance, she would probably get absolutely SCALPED by Taylor's fans for then turning on her. Even the publicity wouldn't be worth the backlash (and even if the general media doesn't revolt to the same degree as the fans there'd have to be some kind of backlash).

I'm still surprised she hasn't tweeted anything like "I am offended that people think this whole situation was me acting maliciously. I would never do that to Taylor, I respect her as an artist"

LOL Madonna is a living legend. You think she cares about what 12yr old fans think? The music Madonna has been making lately indicates otherwise, but I genuinely want to agree with you there. Her coins will be unaffected. That said, being the living legend that she is means that just on sheer principle, she should also be above indulging in what is basically a petty toddler-divas rivalry. I'm still surprised she hasn't tweeted anything like "I am offended that people think this whole situation was me acting maliciously. I would never do that to Taylor, I respect her as an artist" I thought her Regina George in wolf's clothing tweet was passive aggressive and hurt her cause (assuming she cares whether people think she's 'guilty' of the offense) more than helped it, but otherwise not responding to it at all is really the classiest way to go about it. Either it's her and she knows she'd look silly to people in the know if she tried to lie about it, or it's not her in which case why feed the wolves? FWIW Taylor never confirmed who it was either and in fact kind of went out of her way not to implicate anyone. She let the media and fans do all that. The best 'revenge' will be continuing to make smash music.

Hopefully that last line means she will try more trap-influenced music for her next album

Sometimes I wonder how 'real' these celebrity feuds are. They might just be playing it up or drawing it out to get more buzz. Either way, I'm not complaining if it means we're getting more music. Its no longer focus on the talent, put out classic albums and perform nowadays it seems to be more of a case where people plant stories and create headlines to mask other areas they don't want the focus to be. The marketing/publicist job is as important now as the producer/songwriter! Some clearly more genius than others.

Hopefully that last line means she will try more trap-influenced music for her next album Since she wanted to do a "dance" album she should have this next era be her dance era Trap pop deep house pop and she'll be good. As much as I want her to evolve into more A/C music...she's currently the #1 female of the decade when incorporating single and album sales/streams/radio etc. Since PRISM didn't end well thanks to the birthday video, I think she needs to secure one more era of hits in 2016-2017 and then she can take risks for her 2018/9 albums and beyond. Rihanna is next in line as a threat and Taylor is as well. It would be great if she can get into double digits with #1s and have a great era of hits to end off before evolving into a less commercial phase of her career.

I expect Katy to release at least 5 singles this era and at least 2 should go #1. You can take my word for it!

Loved Teenage Dream. Hated Prism. Hopefully she can win me back again with this new album. Aside from the handful of great tracks on Prism, I agree with your post. TD was pop perfections. Prism was.....a mess, simply put. Can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

The biggest thing I took away from that article is that 60% of her income now comes from outside the US, which is really impressive when you consider the upward battle she had at the beginning.
I won't be surprised if her next album gets a bigger promotional budget than PRISM did because of that and the increased business opportunities from the Superbowl.

Katy stanning for #BBHMM....I cannot at everyone shading MTV over these noms! Maybe Vevo will sponsor the awards next year and add some legitimacy to this show?

I'm still surprised she hasn't tweeted anything like "I am offended that people think this whole situation was me acting maliciously. I would never do that to Taylor, I respect her as an artist" Likely because she doesn't feel that way in the slightest. Especially after seeing this tweet:
