She just can't seem to catch good press lately. It's getting ridiculous (one story after another). Why does it feel like a lot of folks just did a complete 180 with her post Witness? Damn, surely a hair cut and a mediocre album can't do that much damage? I guess #TimesUp.

It's the hair!!
In all seriousness though, if you don't think having your first kiss with Katy Perry is special enough... boy you are going to be let down in real life.
This is so stupid. I'm so over everyone getting mad about everything! How was the person "tricked?" Can someone explain? Unless Katy forcibly grabbed the boy and thrust herself on him, I'm not buying it.

Not everyone glorifies pop stars and not everyone likes Katy Perry, including some contestants. You know, he might have been really saving that kiss for someone special and Katy Perry is not special to everyone, she's a stranger to most of the world. With this being said, I agree some people might be blowing this out of proportion but ignoring it just because she's Katy is not the right thing to do. However, the dude could have refused the kiss so people are definitely overreacting to this.

I think some people are really reaching with turning this into something that it isn't. I feel like the producers set this up and it went further than it was supposed to. Why else would that guy say that he hasn't had his first kiss before? That doesn't mean he specifically wanted to be kissed, but if that detail is out there and it got worked into the audition, they knew what they were doing.
I remember Idol contestant James Durbin made accusations that he felt "sexually violated" by Lady Gaga because she made him move his hips a certain way when mentoring him for his performance and when he wouldn't, she grabbed him and told him how to move them. He also felt her high heel shoes with penises in place of the heels were vulgar. I wonder if he was mad because those penises were bigger than his? :sip2:

This situation is both murky and weightless. There's a discussion to be had about power dynamics vs. double standards in the context of sexual harassment and assault, and that this incident does generally qualify as part of that discussion, but it's so obviously more innocent than nearly any other case worth talking about that it's hard to not feel like it's being overanalyzed.
He was tricked, but he was tricked into a peck on the lips. To me, this is both not totally stupid and not an egregious violation.
I also think the biggest reason this is coming up really is the #MeToo movement and that conversation, but that the major players are Katy Perry and American Idol--two things not exactly in great public standing right now--doesn't help.

First people saying Katy killed a nun, which she didn’t and now they’re saying she sexually assaulted someone by stealing a kiss. While the situation is in a somewhat gray area, it’s a bit overdone.
I swear people online (and here at Pulse) are really just trying to drag Katy through whatever they can. I don’t know about others, but I keep seeing a lot of positive feedback about Katy on Idol.

However, the dude could have refused the kiss so people are definitely overreacting to this. Excuse me, please look at the context of the situation: He was auditioning for a REALITY SHOW. He wants to (theoretically) be an entertainer and musician as a full time career. Anyway, I did some research into the situation and yup, my opinion hasn't changed. I agree that this does offer an opportunity to open the discussion about double standards and the differences between male/female accountability in the me too era, but this whole situation is overblown. Oh, and he lost me at "I'm from a conservative family." Boy, you are 19 and trying to be on reality television. Get over yourself. Plus, in my opinion, first kisses only count with tongue. Otherwise my first kiss was repeatedly my grandmother.

Whoever freaks over a first kiss has a very problematic perception of feminism.

Whoever freaks over a first kiss has a very problematic perception of feminism. I should clarify myself: the problem is whether or not there was mutual consent, not "I was born in a conservative family" or "this is my first time". On the other hand, I do think people overreact to the whole situation. Why not let the boy speak for himself first.

"I was born in a conservative family" and "this is my first time" were the reasons why he didn't want it, hence there was no mutual consent. I think? Who are we to judge who he feels is special enough to give him his first kiss or why he doesn't feel comfortable in this decision

Let's be real. You know he's mad because he wanted Luke, Lionel, or Ryan to kiss him first. :sip2:

I just watched Entertainment Tonight and the guy was interviewed to clarify that he didn't feel he was sexually assaulted or anything to that effect. And yes he liked the kiss

Katy also added a third show in Johannesburg on July 21 due to high demand. It’s crazy how popular she is overseas while underperforming in the US. She still has worldwide star power.

Eh, she is just one catchy chorus away from being back on top, imo. Or at least in the Top 10.

Shade or genuine? I can’t tell with the editing:

^I think it's a mix of both, but it's kind of funny b/c I also think she actually kind of fell into the shade part of it more than she intended.
"I love her as a songwriter as well" was really just supposed to be "she's talented, but she's still a raging bitch for whom I have no use" but it ended up coming off as "good thing she can write because a vocalist, she ain't" and Katy isn't quite the person I think should be landing that punch.

Whatever one might think of Taylor, one of the things she did say about Katy was that she would come up to you and say something, then walk off and leave you wondering if it was a compliment or an insult. "As a songwriter" feels a lot like that kind of dig. Coming from say, Mariah, it would leave no doubt that it was intended as shade; Mariah is very deliberate with hers. But ambiguity seems to be Katy's trademark approach. But I do agree with wjr15 that the editing is choppy (that same kind of editing is what had people unnecessarily flipping out over the kiss) so that scene might be lacking some important context.

Hmm. I wonder when someone comes to you and praises your public enemy, what kind of response is not going to be considered a "shade"? I think she was trying to be polite.

The more I watch that clip, the more it seems like something g is missing
Katy: Don’t be sorry Contestant: I love Taylor Swift Katy: I love her as a songwriter as well
I have a feeling somewhere in there he mentioned how he loves Taylor’s songwriting but that was probably edited out because fanning the flames of a highly publicized feud garners better ratings.

For what it's worth, the Idol fans (read: conservative-leaning soccer moms in fly over states) on Facebook are loving her and calling her one of the best judges Idol has ever had. I was pretty shocked. Check out the top comments on any of the posts re: Katy on the Idol FB page.
