I've been listening to the new Mumford & Sons record a lot, and while I like it, I can see how a lot of Mumford fans would feel abandoned by it, since it is a total 180 sonically from their first 2 albums. So that got me thinking, what other bands have had a drastic change in sound, either for a single album before returning to their roots, or just a general shift?
One of the first I thought of was O.A.R. I loved them in high school when they were a jam band-esque reggae stoner band. Then in 05 they started the shift to a more mainstream pop/rock song...and then last year's Rockville LP was essentially a Train record.

I guess a good example of this would be Queen. A group that drastically changed their sound many times over the years. A lot of it had to do with the incredible diversity of Freddie's voice.

British duo Everything But The Girl had always been recording in an Alternative Rock/Jazz/Sophisti-Pop style, but after their song "Missing" was given a remix by Todd Terry and it became the single mix of the song and was huge everywhere, EBTG began recording in an Electronic/Dance Pop style that they continued to do up until their final album.

Fleetwood Mac did with their album "Tusk", Little Big Town did with "Painkiller", Zac Brown Band did with "Jekyll & Hyde". Eli Young Band did with their latest "Turn It On" EP.

Radiohead - deleted Honey had the typical grunge sound of its time, then they started becoming more experimental with The Bends and OK Computer, and Kid A completed the transformation.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned the most obvious band, Maroon 5. They went from a funk rock to pop music and sound like even less of a band now.

' Changing your sound and playing with the same sound aren't the same thing. Maroon 5 doesn't sound any less like Maroon 5 than they did over a decade ago.

You can definitely say No Doubt. They started off as a Punk rock Ska group on their first 2 albums. Then Gwen sang with Eve on Let me blow your mind. Then on the next album Rock Steady, they had Hey baby as the lead single which was a different sound then Hella good which was an electro pop dance song. You could also say that The Beatles changed their sound many times. Big difference from I wanna hold your hand to Strawberry fields forever to Let it be.

fleetwood mac started off as a blues rock band, until sometime in the 70s when they decided to go the pop rock route that they're still famous for today

Tegan and Sara. A lot of fans who got in to them during So Jealous/The Con felt alienated by Heartthrob (not me though).

I remember when Rock Steady came out, I was like WTF is this? a pop dancehall record was definitely a shift from Return of Saturn, which had more pop moments than Tragic Kingdom had (particularly the singles), but was still definitely in the same vein. Rock Steady, between Hey Baby, Hella Good, and Underneath it All was like a totally different band.

GN'R was the first to come to mind.
They started off as a pure Rock band with punk influence, and then slowly evolved into a more bombastic outfit with November Rain, Estranged, Coma, etc. The element of drama and bigger sound (horns, backup singers, etc), is more aligned with Queen than early GN'R. Chinese Democracy is much more electronically influenced, and would be more in line with the sound of Nine Inch Nails than GN'R's earlier material. Now, they're a band with the drama and bombast, but more electronically influenced than with the straight up hard Rock/Punk material that the earlier GN'R perfected.

Spice Girls. Their first 2 albums were mostly bubblegum pop with some urban sound. Their final album, Forever was more urban
I'm sure Maroon 5's first 2 albums were more punk/alternative with some pop element Hands All Over was a bit more pop but But after Moves Like Jagger, they started sound soooooo pop. It's just like Adam Levine's solo project, not like a band

Heart. More of a "gritty" rock sound up through 1983's Passionworks. Then came the self-titled 1985 album, and with it the polished, bombastic, aimed-for-Pop sound.

The Black Keys went for a moodier sound with their last album, which lacks the garage rock elements of "El Camino".
U2 ezperimented with pop music for their album "Pop" in 1997 but returned to their previous sound after that.
Likewise, Linkin Park softened their music for their 2010 and 2012 albums (they tried electronic rock for the latter), but returned to their hard rock sound for their latest album.

I had forgotten about Liz Phair's self titled, shifting from DIY chick rock to some weird Avril Lavigne inspired pop/rock sound and worked with The Matrix.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned the most obvious band, Maroon 5. They went from a funk rock to pop music and sound like even less of a band now. They really haven't changed that much imo. That's because they haven't. They've 'cleaned up' their sound somewhat and the touches of the newer people they work with are obviously present (Tedder, Shellback, etc.), but the core elements are exactly the same. Sugar could have very easily been done during the SAJ days with minor differences, or whenever Never Gonna Leave This Bed was done. Likewise, Makes Me Wonder, Wake Up Call, Misery, Animals, and This Summer... are very obviously the same act playing around. Daylight is also clearly the same group from She Will Be Loved. Tl;dr people are pressed that Adam is pocketing more than their faves. BEP now are good example. They were the same act as far as personality and approach was concerned, but sonically uprooted and redid their whole sound in 2009 to try to get ahead of the rising popularity of dance music. It was a risk, but it obviously worked.
