I think you may have misunderstood me a little. I didn't say that Garth's team wasn't pushing the song. Zazie said it appears that Garth's team isn't making the push to #1 and that they have the power to. Yes, I suppose I did misunderstand you. I apologize. I guess the thoughts I expressed should have been made towards Zazie, not you.

Wamufan - perhaps I owe you an apology. I already knew how, as you very accurately assessed, the chart is just purely a "graph" of data - it can hardly be called an accurate representation of what American country lovers want to hear. I had known that fact well before "More Than A Memory" proved that point yet again, and therefore, I was, dare I say, happy for Garth. I had hoped, perhaps, that radio would see what trash they had become. I guess I can't get it all, right?

Wamufan - perhaps I owe you an apology. Why do you owe me an apology? Just out of curiosity.

Well thank you then. I've never felt that Garth cheated, it was more a matter of principle. But it also depends on which side of the coin you view. As I stated in my post above, I now see radio in a different light and as such, events such as the Garth MTAM frenzy are nothing more than Almanac highlights and trivia questions. It happened and the world will continue to turn. The irony in all of this is how Garth's album did not debut at #1. It is a rare occurence for a song to debut at #1 on an airplay chart and just as rare an occurence that a Garth Brooks album not debut at #1 on the country charts. And to think they occured during the same era--one can only chuckle and scratch their head at this point.

I guess the thoughts I expressed should have been made towards Zazie, not you. I have no idea what Garth's people are or aren't doing. I was making a numbers-based observation that (a) Carrie isn't gaining ground and (b) Garth's at #2 and not that far behind. Also I make the assumption that any label that's really supporting its songs can pick up one or two million impressions without committing any criminal or immoral acts. You just do some work. If the song isn't gaining, then I think it's because the label isn't making it a priority (even if there are good reasons it should). But maybe it's because they have their sights set on next week instead. Or maybe it's because I'm underestimating the value of some phone calls, but I figure if the song is popular enough to climb back up to #2, it wouldn't be that hard to make it the rest of the way.

Zazie, I didn't mean to stir anything. Truth be told, I have no clue as to how much this song has been gaining (or lackthereof) the past few weeks. I don't keep track of these things anymore. My comments were purely speculative and not founded on any specific airplay data. Please disregard my statements on this matter.

There's no problem here, and certainly none between you and me. I was just trying to clarify my own speculative comments.

Garth sets date for L.A. benefit 29 November 2007; 5:26C PM
After selling out nine shows in Kansas City, MO, earlier this month, superstar Garth Brooks today announced a concert to benefit those affected by recent fires in southern California. Money will also be set aside to fund future firefighting efforts.
Brooks will play the Staples Center in L.A. on Jan. 26. The tickets will go on sale via Ticketmaster for $38.60 plus tax and handling charges.
"I'm flattered they've asked, and I'm honored to accept," Brooks said. "This is going to take a team effort like nothing I have ever been a part of before."
The L.A. Times and American Express are sponsoring the show.
Fires raged across parts of southern California in October displacing over 500,000 residents and causing over $1 billion in damages.
Brooks' "Ultimate Hits" is the #1 country album in the nation this week.

Brooks turns one show into five
Due to high demand, Garth Brooks has turned one show into five. Each show will benefit families and firefighters affected by fires in southern California.
Brooks will play several shows back to back: Fri, 01/25/08 - 06:00 PM Fri, 01/25/08 - 10:00 PM Sat, 01/26/08 - 01:00 PM Sat, 01/26/08 - 05:00 PM Sat, 01/26/08 - 09:00 PM
All shows will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The shows are sponsored by American Express and The Los Angeles Time. Both organizations donated $1 million to the Southern California 2008 Fire Relief Campaign.
In other Garth news, Brooks donated his first gold record and other career memorabilia to the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History during a ceremony Friday, Nov. 30, in Washington, D.C. In addition to the gold record for his self-titled debut album, Brooks presented the museum with original handwritten lyric sheets for "Beaches of Cheyenne" and a Takamine guitar he smashed in Dallas in 1991 while taping his first TV special, This Is Garth Brooks. He also donated several pieces of stage clothing, including a shirt, jeans, hat, belt and elephant-skin cowboy boots.
The museum houses numerous musical collections representing a wide variety of artists, including Patsy Cline, Duke Ellington, Ray Charles and Dizzy Gillespie.

I'm curious. It seems I remember Garth handing that busted up guitar to a kid in crowd. Did he, or is my memory faulty?

I'm not much of a fan, but I sure can't argue with Garth's appeal and commitment when it comes to live performances. I was reading the blog of an XM 16 producer ( here) and she seems to think that the next single is "Workin' for a Livin'." The song has picked up a few spins in the past 7 days (19, to be exact). I don't think there has been an official indication since I'm sure someone here would have posted one, but from her comments and those of other Garth fans on that blog, this doesn't seem like an expected choice.

LOVE her blog!!!... she's pretty honest about everything and had her own misgivings about how this #1 transpired... FYI, I managed to get two tix to one of the shows on 1/26/08!!!! Can't wait to go see the legend!
