Hello dear friends,
I’d have to disappoint you with no airing the show for July as I experienced minor technical difficulties but I couldn’t find time to solve them. It’s one of those days when one simply can’t get a grip due to overwhelming amount of daily assignments. I hope you understand.
However, I instead throw a DJ mix that contents contemporary dance music from the dancefloors of the African continent. I’m sure you are noticing the developments on the all growing scenes of the South Africa, Angola, Mozambique and others. The peoples who actually hold copyrights on the rhythms we all share passion for have partially freed themselves of the economic hardships imposed by the western civilization and the effects of that liberation we are now experiencing on many levels, including musical. Thank God for that and try to imagine what would the World look like today if the past was any different than it was?!
Many of you mentioned that my letters should have included the charts in order to be more complete. I tried to avoid this practice as I always find it hard to select 10 tracks that stand out among so many amazing tunes people produce each month. However, I need to give in to the pressure and try it a few months, to see what happens.
So, here’s the link for the Afro-House mix and bellow is a chart with the tunes that moved me this month. I’d still have to keep some of the previous attitude on charts and make this one in no particular order at least.
1. 0208 Crew - Afrika (Lesny Deep Remix) / Trendstatic Music
Deep and hypnotic percussive ride. Smooth spoken words over that makes you dancing with your eyes closed.
2. Dan Savidge - Revival (DJ Fudge Remix) / deepvisionz Rec.
Dan Savidge aka The Jinks revisited by the maestro from Paris. Driving, elastic, soulful.
3. Exothermic Sounds - Unity / DNH Rec.
Not really sure what to make of this one as I didn’t test it in the club yet. I sense it’s one of those that create mayhem if dropped in the right moment. The Deep House sound.
4. Kiko Navarro - Dope High / Local Talk Rec.
Kiko keeps showing the amazing range that his production is able to cover. The name of the tune says it itself.
5. Playin' 4 The City - Backside / Plastik People Rec.
I grew up with the sound of Olivier Portal and I’m glad to see that his standards are still high up.
6. Rhemi ft. Hanlei - Diamond / Rhemi Music
This bassline is simply priceless.
7. The SyntheTigers ft. Tobirus Mozelle - Whatever It Takes (David Harness & Homero Espinosa Remix) / Moulton Music
When it comes to Moulton Music, I’m a sort of an impulsive shopper. This guy sings really, really well and you have a major producer on the remix duty.
8. Teejay Walton & Gina Glover - Rescue Me / Purple Music
Slightly different approach of the one I expect from the Jamie’s label but this is good, heavy on the beat track.
9. Anane - Parole Parole / Vega Rec.
This is a song that our parents used to dance to. The tune actually has its own Wikipedia page.
10. Justin Imperiale ft. Max Paparella - Alma Del Sonido (Lilac Jeans Piano Version) / Cabana Rec.
South African crew engaged in the South American sound. What could go wrong?
Hope you enjoyed both the mix and the chart.
Have a great week and if you’re in the Mediterranean area, you might want to check out the local prodigy – Southern Soul Festival Montenegro. The Ministry of Sound and The Guardian listed it among the most interesting events in Europe this summer.
