I quite like this, a lot. It reminds me a lot of the uptempo Sugarland songs. I'm never, never, never, never, ever gonna get this somg stuck out of my head. (Sorry, I had to).

I like this more than her last lead single, though I wish the tempo was a tad faster. It's a solid single.

The melody in the last line or two of the chorus really reminds me of the chorus in "Lovin' All Night".
I like this well enough, although I could do without the repeated "sugar" in the background, mainly at the very beginning of the song.

Kudos to Jennifer, Brandy Clark and Jessie Jo Dillon for working in the word "saccharin" into a song's lyrics, lol. Sweet 'N Low too, although I think that stuff taste awful.

A teaser Jennifer posted on twitter.
If you listen closely you can hear her son, Magnus, say "Mama, Mama" in it to her. It's cute!

The first couple of listens, I wasn't so sure, but now I'm really liking this. It would be near the bottom of my favourites had it been on her last album, but it's probably what she needed to do to get airplay (and it still is quite good). I'm hoping that radio will give this a shot.
I like how she works unique words into the lyrics, and the really summery feel to it. It's a little repetitive, but so was "All I Wanna Do" and I loved that and it was a huge hit, so I'm hopeful here.

This is FIRE. If country audiences don't eat this up, there is something seriously wrong.

I'm normally not a fan of her voice, but this is pretty decent. It does have a nice easy feeling to it, but I have to wonder why they didn't release this earlier in the summer? I don't know if I can see this one surviving the winter months.

I don't know if I can see this one surviving the winter months. Probably because she didn't record it until May 18th. I know that due to the fact Jessie Jo Dillon posted about Jen recording it and her being in the studio with her for it. It was the first song recorded for the album. She spent April/ first part of May writing for the album and working on some other projects. It would have been nice to have it out sooner than it was but hopefully it doesn't hurt it too much. Supposedly the album will be out in the Fall - late fall. Jennifer said she is almost done with the album and just needs to finish up. She has been in the studio for two stints - May 18th - May 20th (?) and June 29 to July 1st. She hasn't been back in Nashville to record anymore since then due to be in Philadelphia (show + qvc), Baton Rouge (tv taping) and New York (photoshoot + dance rehearsals + video shoot). Hopefully she'll be back in next month for the last part of the album. It seems they are doing a lot in very little time that they've had in the studio.

This isn't one of my favorite things that she/Sugarland have done by any means, but this is really catchy and I do like it for that. It sounds like a great choice for radio, much better than "That Girl," which I never cared for. The lyrics on this song are so clever though and it's a pretty enjoyable tune overall, and her vocals sound great on this, as well. I hope this can at least make its way to the Top 20 of the country charts.

I like Nettles a ton, so I'm trying to find reasons to like this one. Her voice is expressive. She's got an erotic side that, throughout her career, she's not been afraid to show. (But see below.) There's a strong suggestion of African American blues in the "cherry pie" lines, flirting with the overtly sexual and although she shears off at the last minute, I do like country songs mixed with gospel or blues and wish we had more of that. Also I'll give her credit for refusing to rhyme "honey" with "money" just when it looked like she would head down that track.
But the song's terribly repetitive. The melody is dull even with such a fine singer livening it up. And, despite its use of "saccharine" and other interesting language not generally found in country lyrics, by the end I am ready not to hear it anymore. I think that, although this isn't her fault, there have been just too many bad songs about the boys wanting sugar. And, while I'm complaining, why is she so sure she won't give anybody a piece of her cherry pie? I mean, if you're going to work that into the lyrics, you're playing around with bawdiness. So why are you so sure you aren't giving anybody a piece of the pie? Seems like an attempt to clean things up before they ever really get going.
I don't know, seems to me if you're drawing on the blues you are flirting with a tradition that doesn't want to be or need to be sanitized. I'd rather see Nettles get all the way through the song before she reassures people that she doesn't really mean it. I say "keep 'em guessing."
In the end, even if the song comes across as hesitant to me, Jennifer Nettles is real and almost everybody else on the charts now doesn't come across to me that way, so I will have to be forgiving.

I'm not typically a Jennifer/Sugarland fan, but this is a cute little ditty.
If Jennifer has any prayers of going back to radio, this is the type of song to do it.

I tried listening to this with an open mind since she hasn't been on radio in years I really did. I just can't that nasally voice is just too munch. This ain't a bad song and I'm not saying she's not probably a nice person I just can't even get through her songs I didn't mind her with sugarland but since she's broke out one, it seem like her nasally feature has been put front and center in the song choices and I can't even get through them without a headache.

Wow, I don't quite know where to start on that song. LOL! What I really, really like. It's peppy, it's bouncy, it's fun, LOVE Jennifer's singing. The way she sings it has on old timey country feel to me but updated. I like the music.
What I hate about the song. Hate is a strong word but I think that applies here. The LYRICS! Oh my gosh, I know they are meant to be funny but the song is about absolutely nothing. Those lyrics will burn fast on people. I really have no desire to hear the song again because of the dumb lyrics.
How will this fair on country radio? I have no idea. At least she's not singing about getting drunk and partying but the quirkiness of the lyrics don't cut it for me. They may work for teenage girls though. Are they a big listening segment on country radio now that Taylor has moved to pop?
Good luck to Jennifer because I like her. I just wish the song had been better.

This is FIRE. If country audiences don't eat this up, there is something seriously wrong. Eh. I don't hear it, I guess. It's not that this song isn't radio-friendly, but it seems like the kind of song that could be quite polarizing. I suppose it could become a moderate radio hit, but I definitely didn't hear "slam dunk smash hit" when I listened to this. It's more radio-friendly than the singles from her last album, but again, I think it could be quite polarizing to radio listeners. Anyway...either the adds date was changed, or the label is thinking about switching to a different single. Today (July 27) was listed as the impact day for "Sugar", and yet it only got 1 add. Most major label releases get at least 25-30 adds on impact day, so I'm 99% sure that either the adds date was pushed back here, or that maybe the label didn't get a good response from radio and thus they could be considering a different song instead.

jhomes87; There was an ad in the daily country aircheck that stated the 27th still. There's basically been on in there since the 13th, I think. There was also an add in the weekly or on the main weekly download page of country aircheck. I'd assume it would be getting a big push this week since the last few weeks it's been minimal with radio. I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting anything big like Kelsea with add's within the first two weeks it's been available to radio, maybe more than the 4 she has total but not a lot. I can only hope it picks up for her and this song. She did film the video for the song on Saturday. I believe there will be guest appearances from some of the ladies she was in Chicago with. She seems to be tweeting about it a lot more than she has been. It was very minimal and she rarely acknowledged it before the audio went up on youtube/up on iTunes. She's been getting tweets from other artists and celebrity friends. So far, Lily Aldridge, Matt Nathanson, Little Big Town and Sara Bareilles as well as Brandy Clark who co-wrote it. Those are off the top of my head and there may be more but that's what I'm remembering without looking.

I can only hope it picks up for her and this song. There's no way today was actually the adds date. She would have gotten WAY more adds than just the 4 total adds she has so far. As for the Aircheck ad, those usually run on a Tuesday-Monday cycle, so that's why last week's ad was still in there today (the label probably pays for that ad space, and then the ad runs Tuesday-Friday and again on Monday, before the new week's ads start on Tuesday). But I'm 99% positive that the adds date has either been pushed back a week or two, or that they'll be switching singles. Artists on teeny tiny indie labels easily get more than 1 add on impact day...rest assured that a brand new Jennifer Nettles single would get at least 25 adds on impact day. Suffice to say that something's not adding up here (pun intended).

jhomes87; Oh that makes sense! I wasn't aware it was a Tuesday - Monday cycle. I'm not even sure what I thought it was with the ad's. But we'll have to see. I don't think she would get so tweet friendly and/or have celeb friends tweet about the song if it wasn't happening or the song was pulled for something new. I'd lean more for pushed add's date. I did find it odd there was very little promotion from her outside of the little video she made and her tweets about the audio video & iTunes date. Like I said she filmed the video on Saturday. So yeah, something isn't adding up but like I said I wasn't expecting a lot like Keslea got last week but more than what she has. I should add that there was a mixed response from radio stations that tested it. Mostly people liked it but it had some harsh remarks. The worst was one station in California that more or less praised the other songs (EYB/Andy, Kelsea, Easton and David) saying how great they were and how successful they'd all be while ripping into Jen as a person stating she rubs people (fans and radio folks) the wrong way. How she went off and did weird stuff that made her fans feel uncomfortable and leave her corner. They even went on to trying to convince the listeners that the song was a swipe at Kristian Bush, Sugarland and the Sugarland fans for making her sing sugary crap as they put it. That she wouldn't have any radio success with this because of all that. It came across to me as you could tell that they had a personal issue with her or Jen's/her team didn't make the effort to make nice like the other artists/labels. It was just odd, there was very little said about song just about her as a person in their eyes.

Honestly, as I've listened, I've grown less impressed. That rarely happens to me... I love the song, but I'm not feeling it like I did at first. I think I was more excited than anything. It is FIRE, but I don't know, after a few days of listening, how this will do on country radio.

I'm surprised that there's been no mention of a new add date yet, but I completely agree that there's no way a new Jennifer Nettles lead single would get so few adds on its impact date. Hopefully they'll send out an announcement soon. Reba still hasn't announced a new single, either....maybe they're somehow reconsidering "Enough" to launch Jennifer's album/keep Reba's going? I doubt it, but you never know.

Maybe someone who is a little more familiar with this can tell me if this is a good sign. I was on allaccess and looked on the all access download page. Jennifer is #1 on the top download there while Easton, Cassadee, Kelsea and Lee round out the top five downloads. I'd assume that was a good thing and applied to radio unless it applies to something else. I'll add that after a few days of nothing I did notice some new stations testing the song mainly US99.5 in Chicago who put the song up against Blake's new song.

That doesn't really mean much as there are often songs that do nothing at mainstream radio that make it into the top 10 of that section of All Access (most downloaded under "Cool New Music"). I agree with jhomes87 that we haven't hit the real add date yet. Unfortunately, I don't know when that will be.

Is there any news on this at all? Maybe a new add's date or something along those lines. I've been checking around and have been coming up empty handed. The songs has been tested a little more this week but it just seems so light. jhomes87 someguy sabre14

No word yet on a new add date. Perhaps radio knows if there's a new add date and it just hasn't been publicized yet but I doubt it. I would wait a week or two -- if we don't have word by then (or if "Sugar" gets more than 20 adds on the 3rd or 10th), then I'd bet they're switching singles. It's certainly a strange situation but there is no way that the 27th was the add date since Jennifer only got 1 add and 4 total stations.
The song itself seems a little polarizing and I wouldn't be surprised at all if there was more negative feedback than Mercury wanted and have decided to change plans with a new single. We'll just have to wait and see unfortunately.
