I usually dislike when artists name-drop fellow artists (or outdated technological devices), but the Timberlake reference is fine here. I also think it's fair to keep in mind that the period between when a song was written and when it was recorded and placed on an album can be a long wait; I think it was mentioned that the recording for this album started at least a year before the album came out. I liked when the "Rewind" reference was changed to George Strait, but I don't mind if the lyric remains in its original form if it works in the song. Was the reference changed to George Strait? I thought it was George Strait the whole time! But I could have missed something :) I believe it was originally "Tom Petty" and changed to George Strait to shout-out his Cowboy Rides Away tour.

So many name drops of him, yet he doesn't have much love for the genre at all.

A timeline: 1985: Southern Pacific releases their duet with Emmylou Harris, Thing About You, written by Petty. It reaches #14. 1985: Rosanne Cash releases Never Be You, written by Petty. It reaches #1 in 1986. Billboard names it the top single of the year. 1986: Hank Williams, Jr. releases Mind Your Own Business. It features Petty, Reba McEntire, Wille Nelson, and Reverend Ike. It reaches #1. 1989: Roy Orbison, after death, releases You Got It, written by Petty. It reaches #7.

With the past yes, but the recent comments he's made I wouldn't see a real reason for anyone to name-drop him, seems weird and off-putting to me. They may be looking past that, but with his criticisms of the genre lately (specifically the "popular" music), I can't see why they wouldn't just do like RF did and change the name to any other past artist. theboot.com/tom-petty-contemporary-country-music/tasteofcountry.com/tom-petty-blasts-country-music/theboot.com/chris-stapleton-tom-petty-open-letter/ ...and maybe this is the answer to my question, he IS an influence and they don't care what he's said lately.

Looking at it from a purely musical standpoint, a lot of modern country sonically sounds like Tom Petty and some other old time rockers/bands. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Bros, Bob Seger, etc.

Every time I hear this song on the radio, all I can imagine is Shay Mooney blaring out the vocals instead of Gary (and yes, I know Shay co-wrote it). I know comparisons have been made between Dan + Shay and Rascal Flatts numerous times already but this song is sooooo Dan + Shay, lol.

Funny that you mention it – I heard the beginning of "Nothin' Like You" today, and for a second I thought it was an old Rascal Flatts song... they sound so much alike sometimes. The chorus of Nothin' Like You is where I hear RF. Every time.

Maybe they will record their own version of "Enough" and it will finally get to be a hit!!! They'd probably have to raise the key though so the song is high enough for them...

It's amazing how well this is doing. "Riot" took 30 weeks to scrape out a #20 peak, and "I Like The Sound Of That" is already at #22 after just 13 weeks. It helps that this had some sort of [minor] pre-arranged airplay (I think from iHeartMedia) that helped it debut at #40, but even so, this one is still doing great, especially for a 4th single from a group that's had diminishing returns on late-album singles lately.
I really enjoy this one -- I love singing along to it and it sounds great on the radio. Their harmonies are on point, and I love the production. I enjoyed both "Rewind" and "Riot" a ton too. "Payback" is the only single I didn't care for, and I think it was probably a mistake to release that one (and not just because I don't like the song, but because it didn't do any favors for them/their momentum).
I'm not sure how much higher this will climb, mostly because I have a hunch that RF will want to put out a lead single soon(ish), maybe late winter or sometime in the spring. In other words, I could see them pulling promotion a la Dierks Bentley's "Riser". If not, this definitely looks like it could see a steady and smooth climb into the top 10 before all is said and done.

It is still possible for a song to be too high for Gary. Look at "Summer Nights" after the second key change.

I know that they had starting gathering songs for the next album in recent months but I don't believe they're anywhere near done recording for their next studio project. I'm expecting them to push this through the first quarter of 2016 and a lead single coming springish.

This sounds stellar on the radio, and the chorus is just pure ear-candy. I'm surprised a video was released, but it matches the fun, laid-back vibe of the song perfectly. The last I had heard, RF was picking songs for their next album, but they weren't seriously looking at getting anything out until 2016. Although I was surprised to see another single release, I always assumed it was going to be a placeholder for them until new material was released. bboat11, I'm not sure when you started following Country music, but Rascal Flatts have no shortage of a lack of hits in their career. . Perhaps recently, but certainly not in the early to mid 00's, and even "Rewind" was a moderate hit.

He was (jokingly) saying that maybe if Rascal Flatts and Dan + Shay covered Reba/Jenn Nettles' "Enough" it could finally be a hit (implying that it might be released as a single finally... since it keeps getting passed over by Reba's camp). You read his post totally wrong if you seriously thought he had no idea Rascal Flatts had any hits under the belt.

This song sounds like it was engineered for radio. I'd imagine the callout scores to be amazing for this. Is there a good chance this will be their biggest hit of the Rewind era?

For that to happen, I Like The Sound Of That would have to peak at #1 or #2. Can't believe Rascal Flatts have gone almost four years without topping the charts (Banjo hit the top in May, 2012).

This is on track to become the second biggest hit of the Rewind era (it's already made the Top 20 where "Payback" failed and all it has to do is climb at least one more spot to surpass "Riot," which it will do with ease). That said, there's no way that this is going to be anywhere close to as big as the lead single was, as "Rewind" was a Platinum-selling Top 3 hit that also went Top 40 on the Hot 100. "I Like the Sound of That" just isn't really moving the needle nearly as well, although it has started to sell a bit better lately.

This might be the quietest top 15 run, for me anyway, over the past 3-4 years -- I haven't heard this on the radio more than 4 total times. The Highway's totally ignoring it but I seem to miss it the rare times I tune into WYRK.
"I Like The Sound Of That" is up 140 spins and 600k in audience since Sunday and is up to #14 on this past Mediabase chart. This is looking like a sure thing for the top 10 and perhaps Big Machine will stick with it for a top 5 peak. The prearranged airplay with Cumulus shouldn't go without attention since that really helped this one when it was first released but I think the fact this song is uptempo and isn't grating ("Payback') in any way made radio just fall for this one.

"I Like The Sound Of That" is at #9 on Mediabase this week.
This is Rascal Flatt's first top 10 single in nearly two years ("Rewind" hit the top 10 in April of 2014).

I wonder if it would've been a bigger hit if Dan & Shay would've released it instead? Since Shay Mooney is one of the co-writers of this song along with Meghan Trainor.

Jesse Frasure co-wrote it as well. Shay Mooney and Meghan Trainor didn't want to record the song. Neither had the song in mind for their debut albums, so Brad Kennard (Big Yellow Dog publishing executive) sent the song to Big Machine Label Group and Rascal Flatts and of course it was a great fir for them since Shay Mooney sights Gary LeVox as a influence. Who knows if it would've been released as a single is Dan + Shay did record it but I know it would have sounded great since I just can't get the image of Shay Mooney singing this song out of my mind every time I hear it on the radio, lol.

It'll be interesting to see how high this one can climb. I guessed a #5 peak in the recent Predict the Peaks thread :) On a related note, Rascal Flatts has announced a summer tour, the Rhythm And Roots Tour, which will kick off June 17 in Charlotte, NC. The opening acts will be Kelsea Ballerini and Chris Lane. Tour dates are listed on Rascal Flatts' website.

All Rascal Flatts needed to do on Rewind was release slower tempo songs. This song is shaping up to be a huge hit for them. I like this song a lot too!!

I'm glad they picked Kelsea Ballerini though.

I actually think this one could hit the top. It's selling well enough, the callout is good enough, and most importantly there's like no one even close to the song in audience on either side. I think this can realistically contend for a #1 peak.
