I wish that I could say that I was in a “better place” when I found out the news. It would make for a far more polished and respectable story. But I think back to that night: praying on the floor at 2am as Tricia went to the bathroom to take the pregnancy test I’d just purchased from Walgreens. I was scared. Scared to start working on new music. Scared of trying again and failing. Scared of the process of staring at myself through a page and seeing someone that I wasn’t proud of. Someone that I didn’t like. Someone that wasn’t ready to be a dad.

I’ve always had some make-believe image in my head of who I would be as a father. I held on to clear expectations of where I wanted be in my career, my age, my level of self-care, and my maturity. I basically assumed that I'd have it all together. But in actuality the hypothetical “dad" version of me looked completely different than the man whose heart was beating out of his chest on the carpet, praying to a god or spirit I hadn’t talked to in months. When Tricia walked out of the bathroom, I knew. And I knew I had to change.

5 months later we were recording in a remote cabin away from the density that is Seattle. I was finally having fun in the studio for the first time in years. Songs were getting made, finally. I was going back to the city once a week to attend a birthing class with Tricia. When I got back to the cabin the next day, Ryan had made a new beat that would eventually become the song you’re listening to. Half of it is advice about growing up. The other half is trying to figure out how to grow up myself.

When you try to escape yourself, life has an interesting way of creating situations that force you to come back. To look at who you are. This is why “Growing up” felt like the right song to re-emerge with. It’s where I’ve been the last year, through all the ups and downs. We didn’t want to do a big campaign or anything over the top with this. We just wanted to put out good music, directly to the people that have been here since the beginning. Thank you for your patience. Hope you enjoy.

Our daughter, Sloane Ava Simone Haggerty was born 2 months ago on May 29th. There is nothing like the joy and happiness that comes from bringing a baby into this universe. She has filled my heart in ways that I never knew were possible. She is the love of my life. This song is for her.

I didnt see it at all but now I do. But it did become a Radio single as it played on KIIS FM. So idk what thread is going to stay, mine or yours? Mine already had people posting on it. So who knows...

This is clearly a proper single because it features Ed Sheeran... They won't let the possibility of riding his name go by not sending the song to radio.

I'm not ready for this. And I mean that in a literal sense. I'm not ready for the doom and gloom of this shit rapper all over my radio again. Hopefully he hits a brick wall this time because he only broke through for two reasons in the first place: gimmick and privilege.

That doesn't make it a radio single. It's already been stated this is just a song release. It's available for free.

The DJ who played it on KIIS even said it wasn't a radio single...

Anyways, I shortened the intro, the two verses, and replaced the second chorus with the last in Audacity and ended with a length of 3:13. I think it would be radio-friendly enough at that length.

A little advice to Ed and Sam Smith - quit with the guest vocals on every song out there. You are both super talented but there is such a thing as overkill. Too much isn't always a good thing especially if you are putting vocals on average songs (that new Disclosure song with Sam isn't good and neither is this one.)

The gimmick of Thrift Shop was decent and he's not a bad rapper. Can't argue with privilege as far as pop radio went but I wouldn't say his success was completely unfounded. The biggest thing I think worked in his favour that also shouldn't have was how Billboard changed how they tabulate the Hip-Hop singles chart. His hip-hop success wouldn't have been as great had it not been for Billboard and as a result, it's possible he would have ended up a pop artist who rapped rather than the white hip-hop artist he's known as. Like Ed Sheeran, for example.

As to thoughts on the song at hand... eh. It's OK. But how on earth has no one compared this to Kanye's "Only One" yet? :o The intent behind both songs is pretty much the same thing.

I can't see this as being anything more than a heater/teaser/hype song. Even though it has Ed on it, it doesn't particularly have much re-playability and it's not particularly interesting either. It kind of reminds me of a less fun Just The Two Of Us by Will Smith.

Not sure I get the complaints about too many features for Ed and Sam - they only have a couple (Ed has had this, Hoodie Allen, and a Tori Kelly album cut recently; Sam had the two dance hits that are a couple years old and now "Omen"). I feel like there are better candidates for those complaints, lol.

Anyway, I know I read a Sean Ross article saying a Macklemore single release had been expected in the summer, but I don't know if this is it.

Yea, Chris Brown is on every song nowadays. I believe the last time he has had NO song or Featured song on Billboard 100 was April 2013

Hmm, KIIS and Z100 have both played this twice already.

I think this could actually end up being a decent-sized hit. I think it will be released for actual sale soon (a week or so), and it seems like it will get moderate airplay.
