Well since nobody has mentioned Emerson Drive in this thread I feel the need to as the official biggest Emerson Drive fan on this message board.
Now what should I predict for Emerson Drive in 2008? I really can't predict anything for them but I can hope and pray that they have a hugely successful year with more than 1 top 10 radio hit (2 would be nice), that their album goes gold (could happen if the 1st thing happens), they actually get to perform at the ACMs and/or the CMAs and snag a few more award nominations.
Also I predict Rascal Flatts will finally win Entertainer Of The Year at at least one of the 2 shows because they deserve it!

Alan Jackson is a superstar, and has been one for well over a decade!!!!!
His body of work since 'Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning') blasted onto the R&R charts at #22 in November of 2001 and soared to #1 five weeks later (12-19) is unmatched in the industry IMHO, with the possible exception of Mr. Strait.

He is, I agree - I meant that his radio success and exposure will return, hopefully, to where they were in around 2002. That would be highly deserved and very refreshing. Alan Jackson is a class act.

I've stated on another thread that AJ's collection of hits since 1989 will probably be the most enduring of any country artist this generation--and that inlcudes Mr. Strait. He will go down, along with George, as one of the all-time greats of this generation, and deservedly so. Alan Jackson is every bit as much of a living legend as George. With that said, I'm not sure I follow your timeline Marv. I would go back to his debut album of 1990. Why discount all of the great songs and albums Alan had in the '90's that were released before "Where Were You..."? It's good to hear new material from Alan. Country radio SORELY needs some Alan.

I was not denigrating Jackson's body of work pre-2001 under any circumstances; I was merely pointing out how 'WWY' exploded at radio six years ago last month and streaked to #1 (at R&R) in just six weeks, which is extremely rare as an historical sidenote.
Two more of his other masterpieces, 1997's 'Between The Devil And Me' and 2003's 'Remember When' were also steadily moving up the charts at this time of year in their respective marches to #1, and I certainly hope that 'Small Town Southern Man' does likewise; it's one of the two best songs on the radio right now, alongside the extraordinary new single from Trsiha Yearwood.
When I became a full-time country music radio listener in 1997, Jackson's stunning masterpiece 'Everything I Love' CD was an enormous reason why; any CD which includes six top ten singles (including four charttoppers) is an absolute must-have for any country music fan.

True, "Where Were You..." was definitely the largest hit in terms of chart success of his career, but I would argue as a whole, his body of work before WWY... is even greater than his body of work since. He's released a few albums since then and has had a few gems, but the number of future classics on his resume dating from pre-2001 are just ridiculous. However, I could see how someone might make the argument that since 2001, an artist like Keith Urban or Brad Paisley may have a more impressive body of work than Alan. I think for Alan to truly give them a run for their money, you would have to include all of Alan's '90's work as well. That's all I was saying.

* Rascal Flatts will film a CMT Crossroads episode with Nickelback. The episode will be incredibly and hilariously critically reviled, but it will also go down as the highest rated CMT show ever. I'd watch that!!

While I don't doubt that Jackson is a true country superstar, I would have to argue that he is matched by Garth Brooks as well in terms of, of course, album sales and touring, but in this case, also in radio play.

With the exception of this past month, Garth Brooks hasn't done much touring since 2001. He also hasn't had a significant radio presence during this time period either. I think there are several other artists who compare more favorably to Alan during the period of 2001 - 2007 than Garth Brooks. Now, going back to 1989--well that's a whole different story obviously.

I hate to be that guy (the one who b!tches about the current state of whatever and proclaims that the country is going to hell in a handbasket), but here are my predictions for 2008... Brad Paisley - will further cross of the line between wittiness and corniness and stray further from what made him such a promising talent on his first 3 albums because he's finding the general population eats his syrupy songs up--more so than the meat that once dominated his albums. However, he can't resist his climb towards superstardom even if it means de-emphasizing the wonderful songs that pay homage to his roots and cranking out the ditties. (Even he thinks his "Ticks" song is crap. You heard his speech at this year's ACM's.) Keith Urban - Now that he has released his GH album, I think his popularity will decline, along with his album sales. He'll still be the insanely talented artist he always was, but his marraige to Nicole will keep him satsified and he'll just focus on making great music and not care in the slightest about what's radio friendly or what will sell. Toby Keith - Will try to figure out just who he is as an artist--now that he is only selling 1 million albums apiece and is lucky to score 2 top 5's per album. Does he try to ruffle some more feathers, release some more novelty tunes and get back to making headlines to steal some of the attention away from the teenybopper artists or does he say "to he!! with that" and just focus on making music for his dwindling mob? Toby will be a man at a crossroads. Montgomery Gentry - Will still not get the credit they deserve. The public will finally realize that B&D are not what they once were after their anemic "Cowboy Town" effort. However, MG has a new duo to chase in Sugarland that will continue to overshadow their efforts. Meanwhile... Many Artists (I would rather not name names) - will continue to be over-rated and radio will continue to drool all over themselves any time they receive any music that bares their names--regardless of how original, poignant, or clever the music actually is (or usually is not). Country Music in General - Will become even more of a snoozefest due to the public's apparent adoration of sugary pop-country. Me - My country radio listening percentage will continue its decline, probably dipping below 10% (if it isn't already). However, new releases from George, Alan, and Tim will spark just enough interest to keep my foot in the door of country music for yet another year. Speaking of which... Tim McGraw - will continue to shoot himself in the foot by recording the best music of his career, along with a couple of duds and choosing to release only the duds as the singles. Alan Jackson - will release a great album that will sneak under the radar once again. George Strait - will be the lone rock in the country music industry. The one constant-- the one artist who records good music, actually releases the best songs as singles, and actually gets the radio airplay and award nominations they deserve. I guess they don't call him "King George" for nothing. :) One new artist - will come out with good, original, country music and I'll never know because the odds that I will hear their song on the radio are slim to none. In fact, there have probably been a half dozen great artists come and go in the last few years that I never knew about. The country music empire as I saw it in the '90's that was so rich with great music has crumpled and is pretty much going to hell in a handbasket.

Because "Don't Forget" went #1 on R&R, and R&R is now Billboard, does that mean it went #1 on Billboard? No.

Here are my predictions...mixed in with my weak attempts at throwing in some jokes: - About 10 new Male acts will debut again. Only one or two of them will be able to stand out...with the gushing push of the industry.
- Two new Female acts will debut. Only 1 of them will be given significant airplay. After all, nothing must upset the 90 % / 10 % ratio of airplay for Males vs. Females on country radio.
- Kenny Chesney will gather his pukka shells and record a moving beach song with the remaining Beach Boys...and they will shoot the video in California with the Beach Boys taking turns wearing Kenny's cowboy hat. The song goes to # 1 in a flash and gets him in the Collaboration categories at the CMAs and ACMs.
- Gretchen Wilson will be dropped from Columbia, but may be picked up for a DUI.
- Another country couple will have a baby and give it an odd name.
- Garth will re-re-release his "Hits" songs again. This time, he'll throw in a Glow-in-the-dark Cover and some links to "free" downloads of 3 or 4 new songs that will be available on his official site when you pay to join his fan club.
- Taylor Swift comes up with another stirring tribute to a long-suffering, overlooked country legend...Kenny Chesney.
- Faith will release "the music I want to make" -- aka "Cry" Part 2. She will quickly discover that "Cry" Part 2 worked as well as Part 1 and come running back to Country again with "Jenny From the Block"/"I'm Real" version 2.0...titled "Have a little Faith in your Mississippi Girl".
- Faith will release a Christmas cd which will shockingly contain a duet or 2 with Tim.
- Tim McGraw will release a new cd. The single choices will be horrible again, but the first 1 or 2 will do Top 10/Top 5 or better based on his name alone.
- Faith and Tim will combine for a total of no less than 30 magazine covers...including at least 5 from "Country Weekly"...where they once again tell the poor unhappy people around the world how they too can achieve a perfect marriage. They will make shocking announcements...such as they are expecting child # 4, but will first announce "Soul2Soul" tour version 100.
- Carrie Underwood will continue her success and then see her sales slow down. She will announce a solo tour and continue to be one of the few Female acts allowed on country radio.
- Shania Twain will release her new cd. It will sell well, but not as well as "Up!". Despite a lack of support from Mercury and a lack of promotion in general, she will sell more than what her ridiculously low Radio Airplay numbers will show. She will receive 0 awards at the ACM/CMA awards. She may receive 1 token nomination at one of them to be sure that she shows up to perform.
- Shania will announce a new solo world tour. It will do very well, but she will not receive a nomination for Entertainer of the Year in 2008, 2009, or 2010.
- Martina McBride will release more of the same material that has both made her beloved by the industry and bored many fans to tears.
- Sugarland will remain overhyped and drain the life out of what little promotional budget Mercury decides to spend when they put out yet another cd. It will continue being the "Jennifer Nettles band."
- Rascal Flatts will continue on as the unchallenged champion of Pop, Country-less bands. The lead singer's voice will crack ( ) when he makes the acceptance speech for Entertainer of the Year.
- Big & Rich will sing or say something completely outrageous with the hopes of being original. Fans will roll their eyes while the industry greets them with standing ovations at award shows and the press hypes up a rebirth of the "Muzik Mafia" era.
- George Strait will release another cd and get at least one # 1 song from it...no matter what single(s) he releases.
- My final stunning prediction: The Entertainer of the Year category will remain a Boy's club and ACM/CMA awards categories will continue to have repeat nominees and winners from previous years. While at the same time ACM/CMA awards people will continue to praise the nominations as "diverse" and as a sign of what country fans like...yet award show ratings will go down.

Rereading this thread, seems we had a few very good prognosticators in here! I, on the other hand... * Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw will regain Pulse Country forum good will when we realize that the reason they chose crap for their respective new singles is that they, too, are sick of country radio overplaying male artists and want to force radio to give more ladies' singles a chance. Such gentlemen, those two. ::wub:: Yeah, not so much yet. Hey, maybe it's Mike Curb who is really about championing the ladies! Yeah, not so much on front, either. Didn't come close to happening, though a collective BHC performance would have been quite fun. Well...Taylor Swift toured with Rascal Flatts and Def Leppard shared producer Mutt Lange with Nickelback, and Taylor Swift shot a CMT Crossroads with Def Leppard. Those pesky degrees of separation... Hmmm...Jessica went with a signature Reba hit in naming her next product line instead. Emo, goth, same diff, right? Well, there's still time yet, Taylor -- show us how you really feel about that Joe Jonas breakup! This is the one I'm saddest not to see happen, though Brad did take a promising first step in that direction by releasing Play.

Well here goes, I'm no Nostradomus!!! Lee Ann Womack will finally get her CD finished and her first (or second single depending if you count Finding My Way Back Home the first single) will be released in the Fall of 2008. However due to the Christmas songs (like this year), many songs willnot receive the airplay and will fade. Correct: That seems to be happening right now. Last Call is still moving up the chart and Christmas songs are choking the chart. No: I don't believe they have their own record label yet, but I did here that Tim might be running for Govenor of Tennesee in 2010. Half correct: Jack did come back on the chart but his song will peak in 2009. No: Lady Antebellum got the award instead. Half Correct: Gretchen put out singles that peaked in 2008: Don't Do Me No Good (#43) and You Don't Have To Go Home (#53). Both songs bombed! Somebody tell me, did she retire? No: Didn't happen but Bill keeps on writing. Half Correct:George sings with Patty Loveless on House Of Cash on Troubadour. Whether it becomes a single, we'll have to wait til 2009. Half Correct: Cross Canadian Ragweed peaked in 2008with Cry Lonely (#59). Bomshel never made the T40. No: Neither happened Half correct: The new Lonestar peaked at #50 with Let Me Love You. McDonald never charted. Not sure: After Loud peaked at #42, it may have happened.... Chesney - Correct! Carrie: Incorrect, she had 3 Jason: Incorrect, none Sugarland: Incorrect, one (and it was a BAD one!) Taylor: Incorrect, she had 2 Rodney: Incorrect, he had 1 No: Kitty Wells, Jean Sheppard, Loretta Lynn are still alive! As for Eddy, close but missed it by THAT much, missed by one week. We'll miss you Eddy! Not sure: However, Kid Rock's All Summer Long borderline this by taking melodies from two songs to make his #4 hit. No: Didn't happen Correct, I guess: She didn't release anything that hit the chart this year. Not sure: the jury is still out on this one. I just did! ;)
