What artists/bands have you started out disliking, only to have them grow on you after a period of time?

Carly Rae Jepsen. I hated her and CMM when if first came out, but when Good Time was released I started to check out her other stuff and now I love her.

Kacey Musgraves: I hated "Merry Go Round" and all the praise she received kind of turned me off. Then she released "Keep It Yourself," and I fell it love with it (and her album).
Eric Church: I've enjoyed a few EC songs here and there, but I only really started to respect/enjoy his music with the release of "The Outsiders."

Taylor Swift... Wasn't into her at all when she started out. Over the past few albums, I've grown to really like her!

Rihanna, hated her esp. during the Good Girl Gone Bad days, started liking her again after "Rude Boy" was released, then I played the hell out of "Loud" and "Talk that Talk".

The big one is probably Katy Perry. I LOATHED her when she first broke out, way way more than I did, or have since, other acts I wasn't fond of.
As for other acts that grew on me, it was more that I thought they were boring or that their early material didn't interest me. For the most part, that's true and I prefer subsequent projects from them.

Lana. It wasn't her music neccessarily, it was how she was marketed. Couldn't stand how blatantly fake it was until I realized that's the case with every other artist ever, so... yeah. In retrospect, I'm still not sure why I found her so particularly offensive compared to the rest. Same with Ariana, sort of. I was never quite as hostile, but for some reason the "new Mariah" image Scooter Braun tried to brand her with didn't sit right with me until 'Problem' dropped and forced me to love her. Revisiting Yours Truly and Taylor. refusing to shut up about her sealed the deal. ETA: Carly Rae Jepsen is worth mentioning too. Working up the courage to accept her was like coming out-- I kind of always knew it, but never wanted to admit it to myself.

Faith Evans. I used to think she was only Mary J. Blige knockoff but then I heard 'Reasons' and it changed my mind. Faithfully sealed the deal for me.

Madonna - I used to like a few of her songs, but she had always been totally overrated to me. However, this past year I gave her catalog another chance and I realized I enjoy a decent chunk of it. She (along with Janet) has the best workout music.
Nirvana - I used to HATE them (partly thanks to my ex's obsession with them). When one of their songs - I think it was "Come As You Are" - came on a Spotify playlist that I was listening to, I really liked it so I listened to more of their stuff afterwards. Not that I'd call myself a big fan or anything still, but I love some of their songs now.

Honestly, Nicki Minaj. The first songs I heard by her were Massive attack and Check it out, not a fan of either of those songs to this day. Now look at how that turned out BARBZ 4 LYFE!

Banks - Minus "Brain" and a few other songs I found her album as a whole to be a labor to listen to. However, with time though and more so due to the remixed Goddess album I've come to enjoy her music so much more as a whole.
Hilary Duff - Never cared for her music much at all until Dignity came into focus. I still don't care for her earlier work now, but from that point on (including her newest album too) I've been sold.

Taylor Swift used to bug the crap out of me with her little publicity stunts and "boyfriends." Oh and that smug look on her face. But it got to a point where disliking her was becoming too frustrating so I decided to start liking her instead.

Taylor Swift... Wasn't into her at all when she started out. Over the past few albums, I've grown to really like her! THIS. Never have I have been so vocal in my dislike for an artist than Taylor until Speak Now came out. I felt compelled to buy that album because Mine was drilled into my head when I was on a work trip and I really liked her turns-of-phrase and then it just all went from there. Red made me a flat out stan and by the time 1989 came out...fuhgeddaboutit! Lana del Rey took a minute to grow on me too but by the time the Born To Die album came out, I was a full fledged stan. Dave Matthews/Dave Matthews Band took me seeing them live to stop dismissing their existence altogether. Those are the only ones I can think of at the moment.

Lady Gaga-Didn't like her earlier eras but liked the material that came from "Artpop". Lana Del Rey-"Summertime Sadness" remix won me over back in summer of 2013.Before that song release,I thought she was awful but after that I listened to her album and loved it.

Taylor Swift (minus Bad Blood) and Justin Bieber. I actually think Justin is poised to be bigger than he ever was with his next album.

The Spice Girls and it also took me a couple of singles to get into Lady Gaga. I also thought Demi Lovato was lame and ended up growing to like her.

Ed Sheeran. Felt like he was not much more than a knockoff of Jason Mraz. Lego House? A Team? Really?
Then came multiply and I realized that he was a better storyteller than I gave him credit for.

Taylor Swift - didn't like her country music (maybe You Belong With Me a little bit ), from Red -era I started liking her little bit more and loved I Knew You Were Trouble. And after Shake It off(and 1989) she's grown to one of my faves! Ariana Grande - I first heard her on that Mika song and even when Problem came out I didn't like it. But about month after Problem -release I started liking it and then came Break Free, etc and now she's also one of my faves and I can't wait for new music. My Everything was one of my favourite albums last year

Over the past year or so, I would definitely have to say Jhené Aiko and The Weeknd. When the blogosphere was hailing them as the next big things in R&B, it didn't really sit well with me. But I think it was because I was thinking of R&B in a more traditional sense. Once I accepted what R&B is now, in the 2010s, I gave their music another shot, and I quite like a lot of it. I mean, they're not mind-blowing vocalists or anything, but I think they are talented, in their own little ways.

Britney. She was everything I despised. Manufactured, auto tune, lack of vocals and over marketed but then black out came and fell in love and the breakdown made her more human to me. Revisiting her older material and watching her personalities shine through one by one... Adore her now
Carly too. Hated Call Me Maybe but now she bae. Queen of pop.

Ke$ha. I gave "Tik Tok" a listen from Pulse ads because the GaGa ad led me to "Just Dance" before it broke through. However I was appalled by the aural sh*t I had just endured and "Blah Blah Blah" and drunk party girl image only made it worse. My dislike continued through "C'Mon" but I revisited Animal about 2 years ago and realized how solid an effort it actually is. Now I'm rooting for her to finish this lawsuit and deliver some great music again.

I remember hearing Shakira's "Whenever, Wherever" for the first time and thinking it was awful but then a few years later "Don't Bother" came out and I fell in love (still my fave Shakira song, too). The Oral Fixation Vol. 2 era totally sealed the deal for me and after that I went back and enjoyed her earlier material as well ("Whenever, Wherever" is still one of my least-favorites though I do like it now). I'm obviously a huge Shakira fan now (second only to Britney for favorite pop artist) so she was the first that came to mind.
