Jess Glynne's "Hold My Hand" continues to gain steam in the U.S., thanks in part to a synch in a new Coca-Cola ad that places it at No. 1 on Billboard and Clio Music's Top Commercials Chart, presented by Shazam, for the month of August.
Using tagging data from Shazam, as well as sales and streaming information tracked by Nielsen Music, Billboard partners with Clio Music each month to present a chart ranking the top songs in commercials. Rankings exclude any song that has recently charted within the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100.
"Hold My Hand," originally released as a single in March ahead of the singer's debut album I Cry When I Laugh, garnered nearly 57,000 Shazam tags in August to propel the song to No. 1 with its inclusion in the 30-second Coke spot, titled "Family Gatherings.” The commercial promotes summer family get-togethers with an abundance of Coke never in short supply, whether it's at the bowling alley or at home with the relatives. The track was streamed just short of 4 million times, domestically, in August and sold 58,000 digital downloads. Glynne's voice is likely familiar to American audiences as the singer on Clean Bandit's 2014 hit "Rather Be."
Glynne's "Hold My Hand" wasn't the only major debut on the chart this month. "Get Low," the collaborative track between Dillon Francis and DJ Snake, found new life in August as part of Old Navy's "Dressed Like a Lawyer" ad, another of the clothing company's new commercials starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The song was second best in Shazam tags at 24,000 and garnered 6.4 million streams.
Two legacy acts make headway via a cappella commercial adds, including Kansas, whose "Carry On Wayward Son" is performed karaoke-style in Miller Lite's new "Karaoke" ad. Also, the "Can You Bring It: Macy's A Cappella Challenge" clip from Macy's features a children's group rendition of Jackson 5's "I Want You Back." Both songs received Shazam tags of 17,000 and 7,000, respectively, and ended up Nos. 3 and 4 on the chart this month. "Carry On" peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 back in 1977, while "I Want You Back" was a Hot 100 No. 1 in 1970.
Walk the Moon is looking for its next big hit following the runaway success of "Shut Up and Dance," and "Different Colors" looks like a solid bet after its placement into Pepsi's "But Only with Pepsi: Bottle" spot. The song drops in at No. 7 on the chart after 22,000 tags and was streamed 1.3 million times while beginning a climb on the Hot Rock Songs chart, ending the month at No. 36 (chart dated Sept. 5).
