SELENA VS. THE GAMEIt’s not quite a race yet, but after one day of sales. eOne’s The Game looks like it has the potential to give Interscope’s Selena Gomez a little competition for #1 next week. Of course, we’ll have a better picture on Monday when we’ll also be looking at new releases from Toby Keith (Show Dog), R. City (Kemosabe/RCA), Mayday Parade (Fearless), City and Colour (Dine Alone) and Kane Brown (Kane Brown Music).
Selena Gomez (Interscope) 75-85k album, 85-95k SPS The Game (eOne) 60-70k, 75-85k hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=298025

That's a bit lower than I expected for Selena. I figured she'd be able to hit 100-110k given that her celebrity has increased, GFY's good reception, and that she's got Interscope behind her.

Normally I'm the one scoffing at the numbers in these threads, but I just can't agree with the shock/disappointment at that Selena #.
She just felt like a bigger/more buzzworthy star when Stars Dance came out. Come & Get It was also a considerably bigger deal. This is a case against using "chart peaks" to define a song's success; "Good For You" may have peaked higher (and even gotten more love at radio), but it was by no means the pop culture phenomenon that "Come & Get It" was.
A lot of that has to do with visibility. As I noted in the single thread, part of why "Good For You" didn't feel as big is the fact that she was nowhere to be found during the song's run. No performances. No real press/interviews about it. Not even much social media.
Praise Interscope vs. Hollywood all you want, but this was a very unremarkable launch campaign. She was basically in hiding until the middle of last month, and when she finally came out of hiding, she immediately darted off to Europe. The label didn't court the press for reviews or features (which is weird - because the album is actually REALLY GOOD), and the press they did secure didn't come out until late this past week and focused on the fat-shaming and her Lupus, neither of which hypes the album.
All in all, there was nothing to make this album feel like an "event." Even the "she's a legit/sexy/adult artist" thing isn't new, because while she may be getting more comfortable in that regard, that was the narrative that was used to promote Come & Get It/Stars Dance.
That's all a case for why this didn't feel as big as Stars Dance. But let's remember that even if it was as big - or a little bigger - the sales total still may have been sub-100K due the way the sales climate is hitting almost everyone not named Taylor Swift.

To be fair "in hiding" was due to a medical problem... Same with Style not getting a "full" push I think a lot of times there is a legit and srs reason why someone doesn't "fully promote" something , not always "LAAAAAaZZZy!!11!!!!"

Add me to the ones who thought Selena would open better with this than with Stars Dance
I hoped a bit better for The Game too.

...it was by no means the pop culture phenomenon that "Come & Get It" was. In what world was that song a pop culture phenomenon? '...Baby One More Time', 'Bad Romance', 'Wrecking Ball', 'Blurred Lines'...those songs were pop culture phenomena. 'Come & Get It' was a hit, but it wasn't any kind of phenomenon. 'Good for You' seems much more ubiquitous. I agree that Selena's sales are a bit underwhelming. I thought for sure that she'd clear 100k, since her last album opened with 97k and her star power has only increased since then. The fact that she's actually debuting with lower numbers this time is a little disappointing.

Calling Come & Get It a "phenomenon" may have been a stretch, but no moreso than using "Good For You" in the same sentence as ubiquitous. It just hasn't felt like a big event at all, and Come & Get It was without question a much bigger deal. Everyone** knew the video. Everyone knew the song. I feel like Good For You has flown under the radar to a far greater extent than you'd expect of a multi-week pop radio #1. **Since apparently conversational hyperbole needs to be clarified in this thread: No, I don't literally mean "everyone."

After 2 big hits and a 'big' hyped fanbase that's all Selena can bring? Well, Demi, you in trouble girl

Most of Selena's promo this era is in Europe right? I think her team is going to be focused to spread her international presence. I mean, Good For You reach top 5 with pretty much zero promo. I'm sure Revival will have strong legs.

Albums topping 100K in actual sales would be better, but at least it's nowhere near the record low, so there's a plus.

Glad to see her getting those higher numbers. She performed on Ellen on Friday and on the Today Show yesterday, so at least she's doing some promo now...

Awful for Janet ( -83%?) but expected. Her sales last week included 30k in album bundles according to HITS. hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=298049Tuesday, October 13, 2015 TOP 15: SELENA TAKES THE LEADIt’s still close at midweek—also known as Tuesday—but for now we’re giving a slight edge to Interscope’s Selena Gomez for #1 on Friday’s album chart. Gomez stretches her lead considerably, however, when tracks and streams are factored in. eOne’s The Game is holding up surprisingly well with The Documentary 2 and driving interest in this Friday’s release of his follow-up, The Documentary 2.5. Here’s how it looks at midweek. *Selena Gomez (Interscope) 80-85k albums, 105-115k SPS *The Game (eOne) 75-80k, 85-95k The Weeknd (XO/Republic) 33-38k, 70-75k Taylor Swift (Big Machine/BMLG) 20-25k, 35-40k *Jana Kramer (Warner Bros. Nashville) 19-22k, 21-24k Don Henley (Capitol) 18-21k, 18-21k Janet Jackson (BMG/Rhythm Nation) 17-20k, 21-24k Luke Bryan (Capitol Nashville) 17-20k, 25-28k Now 55 (NOW) 15-18k Drake & Future (YMCMB/Republic/Epic) 15-18k, 50-55k Thomas Rhett (Valory/BMLG) 16-19k, 24-27k George Strait (MCA Nashville) 16-19k, 17-20k Fetty Wap (WMG) 15-18k, 50-55k *Toby Keith (Show Dog) 14-17k, 16-19k *Mayday Parade (Fearless) 14-17k, 16-19k

^That kind of percentage drop (or close to it) is becoming more the norm.
Oct. 23 looks to be the next chance for 100K+ in album sales, with 5 Seconds of Summer and Carrie Underwood releasing albums.

I'm impressed that The Game is still #1 on iTunes as of Tuesday night. I would have thought that Selena, The Weeknd, Drake/Future and probably even Taylor Swift would have all passed him by this point.

Oh pretty decent TEA & SPS for Janet! Could it stay in top ten?
What's that Toby Keith release? Shouldn't he sell 50k at least?

Slo- I know Gomez wasn't going to approach the record low- that was just a comment, that even without a 100K+ sales debut, the climate could be worse. :)
areyouready- that wouldn't surprise me. But, at least both should top 100K.
Unbreakable should be in contention to remain in the top 10 on both charts.

What's that Toby Keith release? Shouldn't he sell 50k at least? It's a studio album that was supposed to come out in December last year but got delayed several times. The first two singles off the album have flopped. And with seemingly a lack of promotion, I'm not surprised.

In fact Good for you is a sound that fits her better, it worked with THWWIW and it worked again, there are songs that she can pull live very well and add the emotional impact. She is not the most gifted vocalist out there so she needs to find songs that really fit her. GFY in my opinion is her biggest hit, it was her first top 5 on billboard, and stayed (and still stays) on the top 10 for a good while Anyway, most of the new pop divas are better at singles that at selling albums
