"Southern Boy" got 28 adds on impact day.
Remember, Jordan's song got 20 adds before this week, so "Southern Boy" got roughly 50 stations on impact day which is great for a debut single, especially with the over crowded single release schedule.

Long article in Music Row about Jordan Rager, his record deal with Broken Bow, "Southern Boy's" reason for being written and his upcoming album:

I was taken back this morning when I heard this song come on WYRK. They usually play lower charting songs in their playlist around the 40 minute mark of every hour, so I know when to tune in to see which one they're playing.
When the song was over the deejay (Brett Alan) said "that's Jason Aldean with Jordan Rager and "Southern Boy"....
This is why I would have been hesitant for this to be Jordan's debut single. I think it might be natural for people to introduce Jason's name before Jordan since people know who Jason is, plus Aldean splits the vocals on this song, 50/50.
"Southern Boy" is doing well so far though. It landed at #42 on Mediabase this week and has already accumulated nearly 4.0 million in MB audience.

This week so far Jordan Rager has gained 9 spins and has lost about 100K in audience this week, so not exactly a week to be real proud of. I think the combination of new releases and the fact that Jason Aldean now has his new solo single out so I think radio is now just going to be like "well now that we have a new Jason Aldean song might as well play the song that features Jason Aldean fully instead of half and half". I think the combination of both of those things is leading to this one to struggle.

I think the combination of both of those things is leading to this one to struggle. Right, and I said that a month ago... This one's got a long way to go yet. The new releases have definitely hampered it but Broken Bow knows this is a 30-40 weeks chart climb in the making. Jordan's song got knocked out of the Mediabase top 40 this week by Tucker Beathard and Kane Brown, so it'll have a significant loss in audience and spins next Monday (it should have a nice boost tomorrow, though). If this was an established struggling, then it would be noteworthy. Its a debut single that went for adds less than two months ago.

It was covered a little upthread but some more insight on why Jason Aldean sang on "Southern Boy" with Jordan Rager. NashvilleGab

KKWF in Seattle (Entercom) added "Feels Like One Of Them" and that station is usually a bore with their playlist. Worth noting.
"Southern Boy" has gained less than 300k in Mediabase audience the past five weeks.

I like this song a hell of a lot more than anything Aldean has put out by himself in a while.

This one could still blossom into a moderate hit (Broken Bow is promoting it) but "Southern Boy" has lost 20 net spins over the past four weeks on Mediabase, while gaining minimal audience...it wasn't exactly doing great before that either -- just 300k in audience gained over the month of April.
Even though this is a better and more distinct song that "Feels Like One Of Them", this decision to have Jason Aldean sing basically half of this track was a bad idea, plain and simple. Stations don't want to spin a song with prominent Aldean vocals right now, when there's already one on the cusp of the top 10 that's testing great. There's not enough spins to go around for all these songs so I would have to think programmers would think to not increase "Southern Boy" into further conversion when they already have a current Aldean song to spin. The competition (which is always there to begin with) just makes it harder for this one.
It recently cracked the MB top 40, which helps, but this one needs to start getting better gains. It strung a couple decent updates in row this week but took a step back with a loss of 100k in audience today.

I think this one might be done as today's update was really brutal as Jordan lost 30 spins and 359k in audience which is not good at all (I'm aware it's large part in getting kicked out of The Mb Top 40 which lead to loss of Bob Kingsley's Country Top 40). In a month's time Jordan has gained 433k in audience and only 105 spins gained as well. So it looks like Jordan is probably nearing the end of the road.

I doubt it's done just yet.

But that's just me, unless the ads are really good then I will take back what I said.

You don't throw in the towel on a song that has six new adds.

Jordan is now looking almost as Jordan lost 23 spins this week on Mediabase and lost 332k in audience. With the song being 23 weeks old, and still no foreseeable path into the Top 30 with the competition coming up fast (Thomas Rhett, Maren Morris, Chris Young, and Old Dominion, with new Luke Bryan and Tim McGraw probably coming within a few weeks), I wonder how much longer the label is going to promote this song. I can see this lasting a few weeks potentially, but I don't foresee this making the Top 30.

I'm sure that the folks at BB know that this wonderful single is in for a long climb on the charts, and with new singles from FIVE format megastars (Tim, Keith, Carrie, Jason and Luke) all set to hit radio within the next 4-6 weeks, patience is a must for JR & his team.

I'm sure that the folks at BB know that this wonderful single is in for a long climb on the charts, and with new singles from SIX format megastars (Tim, Keith, Carrie, Jason, Miranda and Luke) all set to hit radio within the next 4-6 weeks, patience is a must for JR & his team. It might be in for a long climb. But the facts don't lie. "Southern Boy" has gained about 300k in about a month and 79 spins, which is not good at all, (averages about 16 spins a week and 75k a week) so while this song is hanging on its not doing much of anything anymore. Patience can work but it needs to start gaining strongly real soon. The past month was essentially an unbalanced mess of gains and losses. Also fixed your quote since Miranda Lambert is also releasing new music real soon.

I have been hearing this on the radio and think it's unfortunate that it hasn't really took off better, because this is actually a pretty great song. This is one I wouldn't mind sitting atop the charts at all, but yeah that isn't happening lol

I have recently really got into this song as the melody and Jordan Rager's voice are very great. I just really wish there wasn't any Jason Aldean, as he just brings nothing for this song.
Unfortunately "Southern Boy" still struggles badly, as Jordan has gained only around 80k this week. It's important to note that Jordan lost his bullet last week and since "Southern Boy" has been on the BB chart for 23 weeks, Jordan has to re-bullet or Jordan will be leaving. Jordan already had his first bulletless week on MB so I imagine it'll be close Monday night.

"Southern Boy" is gone. Sent recurrent tonight on Billboard. Hopefully Mediabase follows so this and hopefully "Girl Next Door" can both freefall and clear the way for more songs getting in the Top 40 in the coming weeks. Both haven't done anything and the labels will hopefully drop both songs in question.

Hopefully today's update means that "Southern Boy" is done. Jordan lost 20 spins and 140k in audience. This song is clinging on to life and the label needs to recognize that this song isn't going to move any farther.
It's a shame that this did not do that well, as I really like the song but they should've never included Jason Aldean.

I feel like Aldean was used to help get more attention at radio, and it didn't work. This song would be better as a solo not a duet anyway. I think adding Aldean was a waste, I like the song overall though. I wonder if the next single will be "Feels Like One Them" the song that was originally supposed to be released before the change to "Southern Boy".

Eh, I actually don't think this would've done any better than it did without Jason Aldean. This guy doesn't seem to have a lot of hype around him so I'd guess this wouldn't have even made the Top 40 if it had been a solo release; I think Aldean's name being tacked onto it was a bad idea for LT success, but in the short-term it probably made radio a little more curious to give it some spins initially.

Official Music Video: Day late and a dollar short, unfortunately. Went recurrent on Mediabase yesterday. Also, Jordan is singing alone on this version.
