Wow, the Jay Joyce production sure is evident on this track. I was not predicting the studio version to be this contemporary but I still really enjoy the song.
I predict this to be a charting single for Brandy, perhaps even challenging for a top 40 placement since a Nashville Warner promotion team will be working this to radio. Very happy to see Brandy finally about to get more than just the odd curiosity spin from terrestrial radio.

Jay Joyce is very hit-or-miss for me as a producer, but oh wow, I love this. This sounds nothing like what I anticipated it to sound like. But yeah, this is actually quite modern sounding and I could see this at least making a decent enough dent in the country charts to make Top 40 or so. I have a feeling I'll like Brandy Clark a lot more if her upcoming album is more like this, because I just couldn't get into her debut the way I wanted to, though I did love "Stripes" a lot.

Welp, this one's on repeat. The production here is everything.
I just love her voice, too. It's so country-sounding. And of course I love the witty lyrics as well.
An excellent song from Brandy. I'm not sure how radio will take to it, but hopefully it can make some noise. I could see it being sort of a "dark horse" hit.

Oh yes. Yes yes yes. I knew I loved this song when those clips showed up on Youtube, but this production is everything. This is absolutely amazing! Radio better get their heads out of their butts for once and play this song like hell. So so soooo fucking good! <3

LOVE. I was already looking forward to this based on the clips and the fact that it's Brandy, but this sounds even better than I imagined. The production is wonderful, Brandy sounds wonderful, and the lyrics are so fun. This NEEDS to hit hard.

I love it, the lyrics are amazing, and the production is well balanced IMO. I hope this gets at least a chance at country radio.

Damn... this actually surpassed my (pretty high) expectations. Loved it! Lyrics, production, her performance... talk about getting every detail in line! Thanks Brandy!

I'm actually not a fan of this one. I was expecting more from Brandy. I hope the songs on her album are not all Rock sounding. I don't see how you guys think this is Country. It sure doesn't sound like it to me.

I love this. I really liked it when I heard it live, but this production brings it to a whole other level. There is no reason that country radio shouldn't be all over this.

Lol rsmatto. I don't like this song because I expected much more from Brandy Clark. I was hoping she would stay with the traditional country sound she is known for. I don't see anything special in this song because I think it's too much like an angry song. I think we should be hearing songs by female artists that aren't angry. Obviously there will always be those songs but I'm just hoping for much more. Maybe a unique sound or a really unique way to say that they are angry. Country to me is down home lyrics, and a sound that actually is country (which leaves out the R&B, Pop, Rap, and EDM influences). If you bring blues and rock into it, then it can sound very unique if the production is done well. The R&B and Bro-Country stuff seemed to get all the glory and that furthermore pushed away the really good traditional country songs from radio. It's sad when something not fully country gets all the glory. That's my point. The production in this song is just not good, imo.

The production in this song is just not good, imo. there'd be no "Honky Tonk Angels," no "before he cheats" "Harper valley pta," not much of shania's oeuvre, etc. Point being, angry songs have always been there. there wouldn't have been rock n roll without country music so to think "rock-influenced" songs don't belong in country is pretty telling about how narrow you think the "country" genre should be, at least sonically.

I mean I do like those songs you just mentioned but I feel like there should be new ways to tell the same story. Anyway did not mean to offend anyone if I did. I guess I just was so excited about music from Brandy Clark, that I just expected it to be a more traditional song. I hope the album as a whole will be much different than this one song. Also I'm not sure why people are calling "Heartbeat" by Carrie Underwood a R&B Country song. It's not. It's a Country Pop song. And for those who thought I hate all Country Pop songs, well that's not true. I only hate the ones that have "that weird Pop Country sound". I quoted that because it's in Hank Jr.'s title track for his new album. I do support Brandy Clark as an artist despite not liking this song. Even though I'm not a fan of this one, I hope it does well for her. Oh and also I never even said that rock songs don't belong in Country. Don't know where you got that from.

I was expecting more from Brandy. I hope the songs on her album are not all Rock sounding. I don't see how you guys think this is Country. It sure doesn't sound like it to me.I'm having trouble making sense of your arguments though so I can see why perhaps your opinions have been misconstrued.

Well seeing as Brandy has previously been a fairly traditional artist, I can totally see why hosssulpizio would be surprised/disappointed that she is not continuing in that same vein. I am honestly surprised more people are not feeling that way! As far as this song goes, I have only listened once, but I liked it quite a bit. I can tell it is one that has potential to grow on me very quickly if I give it the chance! It definitely sounds like a radio hit, so I am eager to see how it does.

Okay, this is just me nerding out over some little details again, but there's a full-page ad for this one in tonight's Aircheck Weekly and it has the logos for Warner Bros. Records, Warner Music Nashville, and Slate Creek Records. Slate Creek is a Texas-based indie label that released 12 Stories (Slate Creek also has Angaleena Presley and The Bros. Landreth on their roster). So this means that Brandy is still with Slate Creek. Obviously we knew about her affiliation with Warner, but now we know that her deal is with Slate Creek/Warner Bros. Records (Los Angeles), with Warner Nashville handling country radio promotion.

I wish we could put a censor on Country Perspective links being posted in this forum so that they wouldn't work. Seriously, that site has no actual credibility as legitimate source for reviews and it'd be nice if we could stop giving their ridiculous circus opinions an outlet to be heard as if they are at all relevant to discussion beyond "look at what absurd things this guy said." If the Country Perspective guy wants to give his opinion on Pulse of songs, then he can just sign up for an account here himself; he doesn't need people to share them for him. It's completely different from posting the thoughts of someone over at Billboard or Rolling Stone, etc.

I don't see the problem is. Besides it wasn't like he was ranting about it he gave his honest opinion on the matter. It's not technically credible but when you have Billboard and Rolling Stone never really criticizing songs there has to be some review sites out there. It's like some sites when they write about songs make it sound like every song is special in their own way. I like sites like that cause they take a song in a whole new perspective. Besides I just wanna know what was so bad about that guys review it wasn't like he was saying it was awful. Besides I like posting reviews from that site those guys writing style is very unique and they have helped me open up to music outside the mainstream.

The guy gave his honest opinion on the song. Whether you agree or disagree is totally up to you, but to be more brutal about the guy's opinion than he was about the song seems a bit harsh.

It wasn't about his opinion of this song in particular, it was of the site as a general rule. I just don't see the value in posting that guy's opinions here? I mean, it's a discussion board, so he's certainly free to sign up for an account and post it on here for himself if he so wishes, but I think linking to his reviews as if they hold some higher credibility like Rolling Stone or Billboard or Allmusic is pointless.

I never said Country Perspective had a higher credibility. I just posted the review because while I don't agree with it, it's an interesting stance on the song. Country Perspective in my opinion is a great site to read as they have a unique take on country music.

I don't see people link to reviews on this site all that often but Country Perspective links keep popping up and if we're going to share other people's thoughts on a discussion board (as oppose to our own), I think ones from credible review sites would be best. I mean we just had some complaints over posting The Boot/Taste of Country articles recently because of how click-baity they are and I think if there's issues to be found with those sites, then I see even less of a use for something like Country Perspective. But, whatever, back to talking about Brandy Clark's song tbh.
