One Direction on their last legs and they are still selling that much? How are they on their last leg?! They are going on a break in March that will last at least two legs. It's very likely this is their last album.

Maybe the term leg has a different meaning in your terminology because I'm still not understanding. A wildly successful World Tour, good pre-order numbers, 2 Top 10 singles, and other achievements is far removed from the term "on their last leg."

The singles this era have done better than the Four era so this album might outsell their previous ones. Definitely not on their last leg, lol.

One Direction's album is slightly better but they are thematically also very different. Made in the A.M. contains some of their best songs whilst Purpose delivers the pop anthems we need from Justin. Amazing stuff from both.

Justin Bieber and One Direction Vying for No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart Initial forecasts suggest Bieber's 'Purpose' has early lead over One Direction's 'Made in the A.M.' It’s a race for No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart next week, as One Direction’s Made in the A.M. and Justin Bieber’s Purpose are going head-to-head. Both albums were released on Nov. 13, and are vying for the top slot on the Billboard 200 albums chart dated Dec. 5. As of Nov. 14, industry forecasters say it’s too close to call, but Bieber may have the edge in overall equivalent album units -- and for No. 1 on the Billboard 200. (Keep in mind, with six days left in the tracking week things could change based on the closeness of the race.) Sources suggest Purpose (SchoolBoy/Raymond Braun/Def Jam Records) could shift an overall 475,000 to 500,000 units in the week ending Nov. 19 (with pure album sales comprising perhaps 425,000 to 450,000 of that total). As for Made in the A.M. (SYCO/Columbia Records), it’s tracking to move around 450,000 to 475,000 total units (with about 425,000 to 450,000 in album sales). Both albums are performing much stronger than pre-release forecasts, which had both sets launching with around 300,000 in pure album sales. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The Dec. 5-dated chart’s top 10 is scheduled to be revealed on Sunday, Nov. 22. (The chart before that, dated Nov. 28, will see its top 10 announced on Sunday, Nov. 15. Made in the A.M. is One Direction’s fifth studio album, and follows four previous chart topping debuts with Four (in 2014), Midnight Memories (2013), Take Me Home and Up All Night (both in 2012). One Direction is the only group to debut at No. 1 with their first four albums. Purpose could mark Bieber’s sixth No. 1 album, and would become his fifth straight chart-topping arrival, following Believe: Acoustic (2013), his last studio album, Believe (2012), Under the Mistletoe (2011) and Never Say Never: The Remixes (EP) (2011). He logged one earlier No. 1 with 2010’s My World 2.0. Purpose was led by the single “What Do You Mean?” which became Bieber’s first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 -- and just the 23rd song to debut at No. 1 in the history of the chart.

BIEBER VS. 1D: THE LATESTUPDATE: Justin Bieber gets the slight edge today over One Direction after one full day of sales. He has taken a commanding lead on the digital front, dropping just over half after the overnight Thursday preorder redemptions. However, this race is far from over—1D remains close behind in sales. With tracks and streams added in, Bieber currently leads One Direction for the SPS crown by 25k. As it stands now, Bieber will score his best ever opening week, beating the 374k of 2012's Believe. While One Direction won't see their best first week, they appear set to beat the 387k of last year's Four by 30-40k. Both albums are wildly exceeding their first week forecasts, each possibly feeding off the other's fan base. Going into the week, each was expected to finish in the 300-350k range. In addition to Bieber, Def Jam has three other titles among the week's biggest releases. Justin Bieber (Def Jam) 425-450k albums, 475-500k consumption One Direction (SYCO/Columbia) 415-440k albums, 450-475k consumption Logic (Def Jam) 85-90k albums, 90-95k consumption Jeezy (Def Jam) 60-65k albums, 65-70k consumption Chris Young (RCA Nashville) 50-55k albums, 55-60k consumption Alessia Cara (Def Jam) 17-20k albums, 25-28k consumption 1D had previously grabbed the edge by exploding at physical retail, largely due to the four exclusive covers available at Target, while the group’s Walmart numbers are strong as well. With both sides engaged in a grueling marathon of events, promotions, tie-ins and whatnot, the advantage in this no-holds-barred throwdown is likely to shift multiple times before next week’s chart is final.

Scooter and Justin aren't playing around. Justin releasing a video for each track on the album today will definitely give him a boost in the SPS department.

Impressive that Justin will see his best debut numbers and 1D will outdo Four's first week.

I know it's not some massive cultural event but I do think the head-to-head competition is giving both acts a boost, as it did to 50 Cent and Kanye West in 2007.

Wow, that is a great strategy. let me see check these videos out. Also I might as well buy Purpose. i was going to wait but No 271 copies difference like Demi and that singing group. Let me contribute to Bieber's magnum opus.

Also not surprised about Jeezy having his lowest sales week. Aside from My Nigga, he hasn't had a big hit in the last three years, just like Ludacris. His last album also sold less than half the total of TM:103.

Would be nice if there were two albums that had 500,000+ in album sales in the first week, but it's not looking like that will happen. But, two with 400,000+ is pretty darn good, too. :)

I think it only helps that both acts appeal to a similar audience. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people are buying both albums.

The whole article: hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=298564Monday, November 16, 2015 WE HAVE A WINNERJustin Bieber will win this week’s race for #1 with what may end up with the year’s biggest debut—but it’s highly unlikely he’ll hold the record beyond one week. Including track and stream equivalents, Bieber’s Promise (RBMG/Def Jam) is currently trending to top Drake’s 535k first week of his mixtape, If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late. Bieber could see as much as 100k of his total coming from track downloads and streams. On the album chart, Bieber will fall short of this year’s record of 495k; that distinction also is Drake’s. One Direction will land at #2 with Made in the A.M. (SYCO/Columbia).Their fifth and final set will easily eclipse the 387k first week of last year’s Four. With both albums dramatically overperforming, many industry insiders are crediting the same-day release as the reason, with each album benefiting from the other’s fan base. Bieber, Scooter Braun and Def Jam chief Steve Bartels—who will have three in the Top 10—have this week to celebrate their victory. Friday’s release of Adele’s 25 (XL/Columbia) could set records that may stand for decades. Here are this week’s updated new releases: Justin Bieber (Def Jam) 425-450k album, 525-550k SPS One Direction (SYCO/Columbia) 400-425k, 475-500k Logic (Def Jam) 90-95k, 95-100k Jeezy (Def Jam) 60-65k, 65-70k Chris Young (RCA Nashville) 55-60k, 60-65k Kirk Franklin (RCA) 27-30k, 28-31k Alessia Cara (Def Jam) 19-22k, 27-30k Jeff Lynne’s ELO (Columbia) 17-20k, 18-21k

Justin Bieber Heading for Sixth No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 as He Pulls Ahead of One DirectionIt appears that Justin Bieber’s Purpose has taken the lead over One Direction’s Made in the A.M. in the showdown for No. 1 on next week’s Billboard 200 albums chart.Bieber seems to be on course for his sixth No. 1 album on the chart, according to industry forecasters. Sources suggest his new Purpose set, released Nov. 13, could open atop the Dec. 5-dated Billboard 200 chart with over 525,000 in equivalent album units earned in the week ending Nov. 19.Of that sum, perhaps 450,000 will consist of pure album sales. If Purpose sells as expected, it will earn Bieber his largest sales week yet, surpassing the 374,000 start of 2012’s Believe (according to Nielsen Music).Aiming for a No. 2 start on the chart is One Direction’s fifth studio album, Made in the A.M., which could launch with over 475,000 units (of which 400,000 to 425,000 could be pure album sales).Of course, with four days left in the tracking week, anything is still possible. Both Purpose and Made in the A.M. are performing much stronger than pre-release forecasts, which had both sets launching with around 300,000 in pure album sales. 22. If both Purpose and Made in the A.M. start according to the current forecast, it would be the first time in nearly six years that two albums sold in excess of 400,000 in the same week. It last happened in the week ending Dec. 20, 2009, when Susan Boyle’s I Dreamed a Dream was No. 1 for its fourth week (with 661,000) and Alicia Keys’ debuted at No. 1 with The Element of Freedom (417,000). Impressively, to find the last time there were two albums that debuted with more than 400,000 sold, we have to go way back to 2007. In the week ending Sept. 16, Kanye West’s Graduation bowed at No. 1 with 957,000 and 50 Cent’s Curtis started at No. 2 with 691,000.
