Great sales for both! Justin has two top 5 hits right now, the "comeback" story, the bigger promotional blitz, so it's was really his to lose. 1D did great, improving from last year's sales and well they are reaching the point where boybands usually peaks anyway

Is it just me or Justin's promo look a little bit desperate though? Like spending a week at Ellen, releasing a video for every song on the album, etc. It's like they were really afraid of being #2.

Awesome numbers all around... I LOVE this time of year, chart watching is so exciting! Hoping Carrie can pull another 25-30k this week!

Well let's just say his team invested more money than OD's team on promotion. I'm not exactly sure what was their plan. Did we know that he would be releasing videos for each song? That's not something you can do last minute. I don't know if the plan was always to release them on the week of the album release. Great numbers for both of them. But next week is the only week that matters.

You could make that case for any and every artist who does promo for their stuff. Is it promotion or is it desperation. Depends on how you choose to look at it.

I'm just glad we have two albums doing 400+k. Don't care for either of them, though if I listened I'd probably still like JB's more.

But isn't Bieber doing way more promo than other artists usually do? Like going to Ellen once on the week of the release, not five times. Or releasing a new music video, but not 12. That doesn't mean he's doing anything wrong, it just seems his team was really focused on getting these first week figures.

Nothing wrong with wanting strong first-week numbers as they can in turn bring additional numbers later on.

It doesn't even matter since Adele is going to blow everyone away next week anyway.

It's just that I personally find it more meritable when someone is able to pull big numbers based on the music and not so much on a huge promotional blitz that might have cost more than the money they'll be making for now. Like when What do you mean was #1, they had a lyric video, a music video, the VMAs and Fallon all on the same week just to make absolute sure the song would be number 1, and then it was, for 1 week, before more popular songs, that didn't have as much promo returned to the top. For every achievement Justin had lately there seemed to be a lot of money to make it happen. (And I'm not even including the theory he leaked his own naked pictures for promo.) I think he's doing great, I just don't think his first week figures should be seen out of this context.

Meh. You can promote something as much as you want, but people still have to buy or stream it. If he put out all this promo and no one liked the songs, they would still underperform. You can't force the public to like something they aren't interested in. And every other artist has the option of promoting their material in the same way too. So I never understand why this is such a huge strike against an artist/song's success. Should artists release their material without warning and then hide in hole until their next album cycle?
"What Do You Mean" has a been massive hit regardless of its peak or how many weeks it spent there. And "Sorry" is looking to be just as big. And not just the US, Bieber is smashing it all over the world. His comeback has been executed flawlessly; he's bigger than he's ever been; and his music is much "cooler" to like than it's ever been. He's one of the biggest success stories of 2015 (in the mainstream music world) and the charts are reflecting that.

Justin Bieber will score a decisive win over One Direction on this weekβs album and SPS charts. The Bieber-1D face-off also marks the first time two albums have debuted over 400k in the same week since 2007, when Kanye West and 50 Cent squared off. Meanwhile, as many as nine debuts may land in the Top 15 this week, with Def Jam leadingβnot only at #1 but with three other new entries, two of them looking set to land in the Top 5. Hereβs how it looks at midweek. *Justin Bieber (Def Jam) 470-490k Sales, 560-580k SPS *One Direction (SYCO/Columbia) 410-430k, 460-480k *Logic (Def Jam) 100-110k, 105-115k *Jeezy (Def Jam) 80-85k, 88-93k *Chris Young (Sony Nashville/RCA) 55-60k, 63-68k Chris Stapleton (Mercury Nashville) 30-35k, 52-57k *Trans-Siberian Orchestra (Lava/Republic) 30-35k, 32-37k Now 56 (NOW) 27-32k, 27-32k *Kirk Franklin (RCA) 27-32k, 29-34k Eric Church (EMI Nashville) 24-28k, 29-33k Pentatonix, Thatβs Christmas to Me (RCA) 23-27k, 25-29k *Alessia Cara (Def Jam) 18-22k, 26-30k Carrie Underwood (19/Arista Nashville) 16-19k, 21-24k *Ty Dolla Sign (WMG) 16-19k, 19-22k The Weeknd (XO/Republic) 14-17k, 41-44k *Debuts ( HDD)

And every other artist has the option of promoting their material in the same way too. Not every artist has the money to shoot 12 videos for an album on top of the actual music videos and the lyric videos. That's just not an option unless you have the money to buy that kind of promo. Should artists release their material without warning and then hide in hole until their next album cycle? I never said that. The Weeknd isn't hiding under a rock. Or One Direction. But they are not spending a full week on Ellen or performing on every awards show there is. And this is Justin Bieber, it's not like he need all that promo to make people aware he has a new album out.

as expected with SPS, Bieber widen the lead, I knew it would win Billboard 200 with SPS but I though One Direction will win in sales but they were close enough

Madonna also have a full week stop in Ellen when Rebel Heart is released. It's for the 2nd week, but still.
I think it's pretty logical for the label to give a no hold barred promo for Justin, since Purpose marked Justin's ascension from just a star to a legit international pop superstar. Think Teenage Dream/1989

The fact that you think Bieber is overdoing it just shows that the promo has reached you, which means they've done their job. There's nothing different about this campaign than most other major pop albums. You're just taking notice of this one.

And I know there's no major release that doesn't get a lot of promo. Someone mentioned Madonna also had a full week on Ellen. But Madonna's promo also felt a little desperate to me. Between this and kissing Drake and wearing the name of her album to the Met Gala, it seemed like way more promo than she usually does, almost as if she had something to prove with this album's figures. Maybe that's the case with Bieber.

LOL at people mentioning Madonna had a full week on Ellen.
When in the past has Ellen caused a serious uptick in sales?
Madonna did a lot of promo because she loved the album. She took her time with RH and had time in her schedule to promote, unlike her last two studio albums.
Bieber's camp want album sales this week. Nothing wrong with that. But, he may get burned in the 2nd week fall.

Actually, Madonna had three days of RH performances on Ellen, and one day of singing "Dress You Up" in the bathroom. :) Not sure if Bieber's performed every day on Ellen or not. In any event, is anyone really comparing a 57-year-old's sales potential with that of Bieber?
