Billboard says www.billboard.com/articles/news/6769320/adele-25-sales-shipping-projections-nsyncAdele's '25' Will Ship 3.6 Million Units in U.S., Could Top *NSYNC's Historic Sales WeekBy Ed Christman | November 18, 2015 8:53 PM EST Sources reveal that Columbia Records will ship 3.6 million physical copies of the singer's new album 25 in the U.S., which would probably mark the largest number of new-release CDs shipped in the past decade. The last album to ship more than that would have been *NSYNC's "No Strings Attached, which shipped 4.2 million units back in 2000.As of Nov. 18, insiders tell Billboard that parent company Sony Music is projecting first-week CD sales of 1.5 million, while Apple digital sales are expected to be about 900,000. Overall downloads should come in at about 1 million units. Sources also suggest that preorders at iTunes will wind up at about 450,000, while Amazonβs pre-orders have already topped 100,000, for both CDs and MP3s. Industry prognosticators add that the split between CD and digital downloads will probably be around 60/40, a shift from Adele's last album, the 11.2 million-selling 21, where digital only accounted for 28 percent of sales. If the digital and CD projections are hit, that means Adele would be selling about 2.5 million units in her debut week, which would make it the largest-selling album in a week in Nielsen SoundScan history, which began monitoring album sales in 1991. That record is currently held by *NSYNCβs No Strings Attached, which sold 2.415 million units back in the week ending March 26, 2000. At press time, nearly 28 hours from the album's Friday, Nov. 20, street date, it's still unclear if streaming sites will have the album. One service source says the album is not expected to arrive to streamers until the Wednesday after street date but could not say if that applied to all services or if one of the services was getting an exclusive. In addition to the initial week-one projection of almost 2.5 million, sources add that Sony projects it will sell an additional 1 million CDs over the following three weeks. By Christmas, 25 could be at 4 million units total.

Well deserved. If she's going to break a record, I want her to break ALL the records! :)

Best selling album of 2015 right out the gate (Calender Year). Are there any Black Friday deals on caskets? There's going to be a ton of bodies and we need that Costco wholesale deal to hide them all.

Now I'm wondering if all these numbers will help her sell more the way the numbers game helped Bieber and One Direction.

This year I only bought Rebel Heart on street date. Last year none. I'm planning to buy at least 3 copies on Saturday at Target (flying right after work on Friday, otherwise I would've gotten there!)

With SPS, Bieber could be past a million in 3 weeks, and 1D might get there by the end too. Add this and the possibility of Sam and Meghan crossing the million mark too, we may have a fair amount of million sellers this year.

Adele's first-week sales should count towards Billboard chart year 2016, am I right?
If that's the case, it'd be really interesting to see that the (inevitable) #1 album in Soundscan for 2015 won't even appear in Billboard's 2015 yearend chart.

Yup, that will be pretty much the case, I think. Taylor will have the Billboard 2015, while Adele will take the SS 2015, kinda like last year where Frozen have the BB, while Taylor got the SS

I knew it! And I'll tell you another thing, I don't think 3m is entirely out of the question either.

With SPS added 2,5 million is sure, without them, we'll see. 4 million by Christmas seems too low.

3.6 million shipped + 500k+ digital = 4x platinum at release. Amazing.
Amazon raised the price of the vinyl from $18.99 to $22.99. The CD is #1 on Amazon. The vinyl is #5 . Her vinyl is selling more on Amazon right now than 1D's CD.

With the figures in the Billboard article, none of them include SPS. That's all pure album sales.

Either way, some sort of record will be set.
This also tells me, with the right music and right rollout to generate interest, people are still willing to shell out 10 bucks for a CD rather than stream it for free.

SPS will obviously break the record. But I'm hoping pure sales it wont, I want at least one record from the early 00s to stick around.

But Adele is more like a unique phenomenom. She is still a music artist peddling a CD in an era dominated by streaming. Yes it is Adele but put the right product out there and people will still buy it.

One thing that will be interesting is that ADELE loses part of one 'sales' day for physical sales - Thanksgiving - not sure how many people will be picking up CD Thursday night during the door busters - so if she breaks the record will be even more amazing considering the still large portion of physical CDs.

People don't want to pay for s**tty music, that's why they stream it for free. When the music is good, and they really support an artist, they'll buy it.

Phenomenal. You know, out of all Billboard records, I always thought N'Sync's first week achievement would never be challenged/broken. It just didn't seem plausible with the decline of the industry. It took 15 years, but I'm glad to say I was proven wrong.
Way to go Adele! What a an accomplishment, especially in 2015.

OK this idea of "streaming for free" is not true, even on the free tier of Spotify. You are still paying by being forced to listen to ads. It is just that the cost is socialized and you pay for it with your time instead of your own money.

All Targets in the US received their shipments today. The store my fwb works at received 485 copies of the Target exclusive. Most stores received 200-700 copies. For comparison, the most 1D got was around 300 I believe for the higher end busy stores. Adele is going to be over 2x as much.

I really hope I can eat crow when the sales come out. But I'm also wondering if the hype is just too real with this. We've seen it before with music, movies, TV shows, etc. For weeks, people start hyping things up with insane numbers, but then they just don't deliver as much. I'm really saying this because if for some reason she "only" does like 1.7 million, people(haters) will call it a "Failure" because she was rumored to now do upwards of 3 million.

It is just that the cost is socialized and you pay for it with your time instead of your own money. Free over the air radio would then not be free either. You are being forced to listen to station ads and also forced to listen to songs they may play that you might not want to hear but, you still pay zero out of pocket.
Same goes for the free-tier of streaming. (Not that I am a fan of ad-based music, my library is big enough that I listen to what I want so I rarely opt for that anyway)

Well deserved. If she's going to break a record, I want her to break ALL the records! :) Yes my girl Britney held it for 15 years. Eminem's (solo artist) N sync's (overall) Utada's (WW first week) Mariah (apparently one of her albums sold 3.1M WW during a xmas week or something) All I want is 2.420 in the US and then 3.2M WW.

The only official "multi-metric consumption" record would be for December 2014-present. But, per the article, it will challenge for the largest album sales week in the Nielsen era, and will blow past the best female sales week.

There's no comparing 2001, the peak of album sales, to 2015, the lowest point of album sales either, but everyone does it.
