In normal circumstances i will think that the chances of any of the OD members having a successful solo career will be near to zero, but in these times of social media things are different (the resurrection of Bieber's career prove it, or the fact that people famous on internet like Shawn Mendes, Halsey or Troye Sivan were able to sell albums before having a hit single) so maybe he will be able to do it. He is handsome and he can sing, he has already fans, so if the song is good he will have a chance. The US market will be a better judge. For previous experiences ex boyband members are able to score hits on UK on their comebacks as solo singers without being an indication of a future solo career (Mark Owen, Stephen Gately, Gary Barlow, hey Gary even had two number ones there) By the way, i think it's a good idea not wait too long for the release We can't compare Zayn to the other three ex-boy banders you listed. None of the others were ever popular in America with their band or solo. I agree with your point about social media. The individual 1D members certainly are more visible than the NSYNC/BSB/NKOTB members aside from their face (Justin/Nick/Donnie). Anyway, Zayn's song will be a hit; or at least it will debut big. I wasn't comparing him, i was saying that having a hit in UK will be pretty normal for a start of a solo career of a member of a popular boyband, the guys i mentioned were from popular boybands on the UK, they had at least one hit, but their solo careers never took off. In the USA it won't be that easy to score a hit I know fans forgive everything, but his recent interviews weren't smart at all, it's perfectly ok wanting to make different music but you better respect your old fans if you want them to continue to support you (and it's supposed that those fans liked the music you did in the band), and if there's a real departure from OD sound the reaction could go either way. People always talk about Justin Timberlake, but the truth is he started his solo career after Pop, which was an album way less popular than No strings attached, and with a less typical boyband sound. Anyway, it will be interesting to see if he is able to be a solo artist

He just doesn't have a filter anymore. He doesn't give a fuck what people think, nor should he. His attitude is "accept me for me or fuck off." Plenty of successful artists, especially in the genre he wants to do, have that attitude. He'll be just fine. I can't wait to see his success. Bring on Friday!

I mean... eh, he still doesn't strike me as very intelligent (or professional, for that matter). He is driven though, and he has people to take care of the important stuff so who cares? He's a pretty face with a good voice. Should do well unless the material is ass.

Exactly. Zayn is very smart. He just doesn't have a filter anymore. He doesn't give a f**k what people think, nor should he. His attitude is "accept me for me or f**k off." Plenty of successful artists, especially in the genre he wants to do, have that attitude. He'll be just fine. I can't wait to see his success. Bring on Friday! Well, that's exactly the definition of not being smart. When you are in the music business you need to know where you come from and he seems to totally forgot that. He is handsome, he can sing and he has already a fanbase, but if he doesn't learn to shut up from time to time he is going to burn his options really fast

Kanye has that attitude too and he's far from not smart.

The attitude is good. People like edgy. He's marketable. They're aiming to break him into an older audience anyway, in which his persona, image and attitude will work.

Kanye has that attitude too and he's far from not smart. Are you seriously comparing Zayn with Kanye West? First of all, Kanye is a rapper so the i'm too good for this world is expected. A lot of untalented rappers have that attitude and Kaney (as annoying as he can be) has talent to sustain that attitude. Zayn is an x factor contestant who ended in a prefabricated (but very successful) boyband. He has absolutely all to prove, specially because reading his interviews he seems to think that all the music that he did with OD is pure crap. All that happened with Naughty Boy was beyond absurd, and he wasn't smart there either. If his music is good and connects with an audience that attitude won't be a problem, but we'll see if that happens. We have a lot of examples of highly hyped songs that didn't end being the big hits everybody expected. Till he ends being really big (they were other boyband member who were inmensely popular that failed miserably when they went solo) he can say whatever he wants without consecuences (and we have Justin Bieber as recent example) but till then the best think you can do is trying to make the girls that adored you when you were in the band to buy your songs

The track has been playlisted by BBC Radio 1. That said, looks like he will drop his last name and his name is going to be capitalized if it's taken into consideration how it's written below.

Kanye has that attitude too and he's far from not smart. I'd disagree with this on a few levels. One, 2004/College Dropout Kanye is not anywhere on the level of 2015 Kanye. It's easy to forget now because he's been on his current level of ridiculous for several years, but Kanye was not always this over the top. You can get away with attitude later in your career but when you're first starting out you have a much shorter leash, because you haven't 'earned' the right just yet. On that note, the touch of ego Kanye did have in 2004 was visible, but he got a pass because he already had established himself as a hit-making producer. Zayn hasn't established anything yet on his own. Two, as arrogant as Kanye is he has never swung back at the people who put him on. Zayn will need to tread lightly when talking about needing to break out and do his own thing musically because if he comes across as dissing his former 1D mates he will lose some of the fans who might have still been inclined to support him solo. Three, there are different types of 'smart' and it's important to have the right kind of smarts for the occasion. Even a rocket scientist can be 'dumb' in the sense that he has no media training and doesn't know when to keep his mouth shut. That's where I am having issues with Zayne right now - even if his attitude ultimately doesn't hinder him in any way, why would he even take the chance of letting it get in the way when he's getting his solo career started? But Zayn is in a very fortunate position that despite his attitude he has seemingly not burned any bridges or made anyone behind the scenes want to tear him down. He should not abuse that.

He's on Zane (lol Zayn & Zane) Lowe's Beats 1 show tomorrow for an interview and to share music - not sure if it was specified if it'll come in full or not.

I liked that interview, he seemed so... beautiful and fragile, and I do think that he is starting to get past all of the dumb shit that occurred during the emotionally hectic split from the group, he seems more articulate with his experience in One Direction now, and I can understand a bit more where he's coming from.
Also, I'm soooooo hype for this to come out!!! I want to hear this so badly!!!

Early prediction: I don't see this song being that good. For Hot 100, I think it can reach top 40, but I don't see it reaching top 10.
