Artist: Eric Church Single: "Record Year" Writers: Eric Church, Jeff Hyde Album: Mr. Misunderstood Label: EMI Nashville Add Date: TBA
Broadway in Connecticut (iHeartMedia deejay) says that EMI is moving on from "Mr. Misunderstood" and "Record Year" will be Eric's new single.
Not surprising. Too much work to make "Misunderstood" a top 10 single and they rather just put a new song out there.

Great song! A tad sad that "Mr. Misunderstood" didn't do better. The album is loaded with potential single choices and "Record Year" was a safe bet.
Here is the YT link for everybody outside of the U.S. & Canada.

This isn't a surprising choice. Kind of disappointed they won't push "Mr. Misunderstood" into the top 10, but oh well. If only other labels were willing to cut their losses with songs not moving much (I'm looking at you Chase Bryant). I've said it before but i personally prefer "Round Here Buzz" for the next single. That one has to be released at some point, that's an absolute smash waiting to happen. I think this one will be pretty big as well though, and should return him to #1. The chorus is pretty witty and I could easily see this one selling well.

I almost think the label gives up easy on Eric's singles when another label would most likely push till the well runs dry. I think part of this is because Eric may not care and part of it may be to gel with his outlaw style. Either way, their method gets the job done and keeps music flowing.

Windmills on twitter said it great a few minutes ago, and exactly what I was thinking: The label saw the song struggling at radio and probably didn't get the appropriate metrics for their liking. The ACM's are in 2-3 months and getting a new song out there now gives them time for whatever the have planned. They know Eric isn't the normal artist and he doesn't need #1 or even top 5 singles to keep his current star status.
"Mr. Misunderstood" accomplished its main purpose: Create buzz for the album drop and radio's excitement. The title track seemed like the right choice to go first since the album was a surprise release.

I actually applaud Eric's team for not forcing singles up the chart. It's because of this that he's able to release more singles per album, and I think that really helps him from an album sales standpoint while simultaneously diversifying his singles discography.
As much as I really enjoy "Mr. Misunderstood", I never thought it was an obvious smash like "Give Me Back My Hometown", "Talladega", or "Springsteen". But I think "Record Year" is a song that can bring him back to the top of the charts. It's another high-quality release, and unlike "Mr. Misunderstood", "Like A Wrecking Ball", or "Cold One", it strikes me as more commercial and more radio-friendly. The good thing is that it doesn't sacrifice quality characteristics to be radio-friendly.
Simply put, "Record Year" is fantastic. Great lyrics, great vocals, great production and arrangement. I fully support it as the 2nd single (hopefully we'll get "Round Here Buzz" and "Kill A Word" as single at some point, too).

This song is a perfect example of how good a songwriter he is. I'm expecting this to be a huge hit.

I really liked this. I wasn't sold on Mr. Misunderstood, so I'm glad they moved on, but this is much much better. Here's hoping it hits the top.

Yay, yay, yay! This makes me soooo happy. Absolutely love this song. My favorite by far on the album.
Also, I absolutely love the sound of the record static that plays in the beginning of this song. I think that's brilliant. Somehow I didn't even notice it the first few times I heard the song.

This has been one of my favorites off this album for some reason. Eric definitely doesn't need #1 hits to be successful. So I'm glad to see them move on from Mr misunderstood. Wish they would do that more often. I wouldn't mind if they moved on quickly with every single and released every song on that cd Eric's onto the radio :)

Eric Church has always been hit or miss for me, but these past couple years he has definitely been way more "hit". Just listened to this, and I am definitely a fan! "Mr. Misunderstood" was great, but this is excellent! I am a little shocked to see them moving on so quickly though. I feel like "Mr. Misunderstood" has been flying up the charts; it feels like it just came out. I have no problem with songs that only chart for a short amount of time though. I am glad to see a song peaking BEFORE I grow sick of it for once!

Great song. Really happy about this decision. I think "Round Here Buzz" is the other smash on the album besides this one but excited for this one. The imagery in this song is ridiculous.

Gosh I'm glad this is being released, it's by far my favorite song on the album, I had a small hesitation that they would hold this off because of the "Counting on a needle to save me..." line, which is a nice play on words, but ultimately sticks with the idea of a record player enough to keep it clear...but I think that may have just been my worry-mind over-analyzing things. So happy this is going to be a single.

I am a little shocked to see them moving on so quickly though. I feel like "Mr. Misunderstood" has been flying up the charts; it feels like it just came out. I'd normally be shocked but since this is Eric, I'm not that surprised. I echo jhomes87's point and yours for that matter that it's refreshing to see a label/artist move on to next singles so quickly. "Mr. Misunderstood" had a fast climb to the top 20 but it's been a rather pedestrian run since then. This song has been in the #20-15 range on Mediabase for the past six weeks and has averaged about 1.0 million in audience gains the past three weeks. Radio's shown signs of hesitation converting this one once it hit the top 20 and a top 10 peak would have likely been the max it would've been able to accomplish. The label feels it's more worth getting the next single out there rather than keep trying to promote this for another half-dozen weeks or so.

Good choice. I have to admit that I'm surprised they're moving on from "Mr. Misunderstood" (one of my favourite country singles of the last few years) so quickly, but at least that's been a top 15 hit for him.
I'm not sure "Record Year" will go #1, but it should have an easier ride at radio than "Mr. Misunderstood".

We'll likely be hearing official word of "Record Year" going to radio by next week as "Mr. Misunderstood" is officially finished (lost 90 spins and over 700k in audience today).

Finally listened to this on YouTube tonight since I'm not hearing it on the radio yet. Wow this is a really good and well-written song. I'm not sure there's anyone out there who knows who they are as an artist like Eric Church does. I hope this is really successful for him.
Also, much like Mr Misunderstood, the very eclectic references that he name-drops reveal more of his influences. You can't go wrong with Songs in the Key of Life. One of my top 10 albums of all time.

Bunch of stations are starting to play "Record Year" now. It will make its debut on the Billboard Airplay chart this upcoming Monday (it has roughly 500k in audience on Mediabase this week).

I didn't care for his last single but oh wow I love this. This is up there with "Talladega" as my favorite song of his already and I've only listened to it twice.

"Record Year" looks to be the most added song on Mediabase this week with at least 43 adds on impact day.

I'm in love with this. I liked the first single but I never actually listened to the full album. I love the lyrics, the idea, the production, and I hope this gets the recognition it deserves.

I like this song, he's 2/2 for me with this era, but I feel that this song is too short :(

I like this more and more every time I hear it. He moved 54-48* on Billboard last week, and is close enough to the songs ahead of him that a decent week this week should put him in the top 40, or close to it at least.

I like this song, he's 2/2 for me with this era, but I feel that this song is too short :( I agree. Normally I don't like songs that repeat the chorus ad infinitum after the second verse, but this one is so good I wouldn't mind hearing it again.
