This is phenomenal. With songs like this, 21 Summer, Mayday, Record Year, Humble and Kind, My Church, Head Over Boots, Unlove You, Nobody to Blame, and Shut Up and Fish, 2016 is really shaping up to dethrone 2006 as my favorite year of country music, and the year has just started.

Excellent country song and video!! I had to buy this on iTunes immediately!! Really hope radio would keep playing this and not be afraid of ballads.
Sales are amazing also! It's only 10am and already #4 on iTunes Country and top 25 all-genre. Should rise even higher on the charts once we get the full 24 hours of sales. :)

This is a nice enough song and I definitely think it's going to be a big hit, but it feels a bit too "fairy tale" to me, as in "and they lived happily ever after". I like songs about love and commitment, but I'd like this one more if it had a couple of verses about a trial or tribulation that a young married couple might face. Some of the lyrics are pretty good, but I think the only lyric that even mentioned anything negative went something like "through the good and the bad, we'll give all that we have". I realize there are a lot of fluffy songs on the radio -- songs with no real substance to them -- so I shouldn't be going after this one. But I guess that the picture that this song paints for me doesn't feel very realistic at all. It's 100% happy and 0% sad. The story in this song is the type of life that a lot of people wish for, whether they're already in love or not. But it pretty much ignores the difficulties that we will all inevitably face at some point in our lives. Also, to me, the melody/arrangement/production of "From The Ground Up" really sounds like Christina Perri's "A Thousand Years".

I really like the first verse but then it hits the chorus and it kinda loses all the momentum

I agree that this song isn't a masterpiece lyrically, but I think it does address some of those hard times in the second verse: This life will go by in the blink of an eyeBut I wouldnβt wanna spend it without you by my sideThe clouds are gonna rollThe earthβs gonna shakeBut Iβll be your shelterThrough the wind and the rainThe second verse shows the difficulty of seeing the passage of time, which can be a sad realization for people in love. Also, mentioning the earth shaking, wind, and rain symbolizes the trials this couple goes through. The idea that he'll shelter her through the hard times leads into the togetherness-focused chorus nicely, in my opinion.

Also, mentioning the earth shaking, wind, and rain symbolizes the trials this couple goes through. The idea that he'll shelter her through the hard times leads into the togetherness-focused chorus nicely, in my opinion. You bring up a good point. My counterpoint is that the line about being the other person's shelter seems to imply that they'll just be able to sweep any troubles that they might face under a rug. It still seems too easy to me. I definitely think that couples who go through life together can be each other's shelter, but the use of "I'll be your shelter" doesn't work for me here. What happens when the man (I say "man" because the song is sung from Shay Mooney's perspective) isn't able to be a shelter? His spouse can be the shelter of course...but what if both of them are struggling? Again, I do think that having another person to lean on and being able to support one another can help both people go through life. But this song just seems way too "sweet" to me. I think I saw somebody compare it to Trace Adkins' "You're Gonna Miss This". Personally, that comparison doesn't work for me. Trace's song details the happy and sad/stressful periods of a young person's life, both before and after that person gets married. "You're Gonna Miss This" takes a much more realistic approach. Another song I thought of is Kenny Chesney's "There Goes My Life", although that one's a bit different (and much stronger, in my opinion) because it starts with a difficulty right off the bat (an unexpected pregnancy). I don't dislike this song. It just feels a bit too "hey, we're in love, now let's get married, conquer the world, and live happily ever after" to me...basically it seems like the couple in this song is looking at life through rose-colored glasses. I like "From The Ground Up" well enough but I think it could have been better.

I don't disagree or agree with you but maybe you should listen to Shay describe this song. He wrote it based on his own experience with his grandparents who were married for 65 years. Of course there's going to be obstacles, but being married for 65 years is something to be proud of and using that as a subject and relating it to where they both are now, possibly getting married soon and having children, this song works perfectly in my opinion.

I'm definitely going to be in the minority here, but I don't like this. As with most of their stuff, it sounds like I am listening to Rascal Flatts or Hunter Hayes in terms of vocals, and coming from me that isn't a good thing. Furthermore, I don't hear any emotion in their voices here and the lyrics come off as cliche to me. Pretty enough melody I guess, but I still fail to see anything that special about it. Also, while I can appreciate the simplicity of the song, the production really doesn't do it that many favors either IMO. I agree with the "less is more" production choice, but I would have liked that production to blow me away somehow and enhance the melody of the song. And it just... didn't. Not for me at least. That said, it sounds like something that will smash. Listeners love this kind of sappy love song. I'm sure it will be played at many weddings.

This makes for a great wedding/engagement song, but otherwise I'm with jhomes87 that it's just a bit too fantastical. I really like the first verse and the way it weaves his grandparents experiences with his own, but the chorus and second verse seem quite under-developed by comparison. The second verse is just one empty platitude after another. I still like this; Shay Mooney sounds terrific and I like the melody quite a bit - i just wish the lyrics were a little more developed and detailed.

Well, for the niche song it is- a sappy love song, it does its job.
Agree with Music Row-it will be the wedding song of this spring for sure.
Also agree withJ Holmes that it is too sweet, unrealistic to have broad appeal and it isn't very 'interesting' to me (i.e., I wouldn't want to listen to it over and over and it will burn quickly). But to young people in love, sentimental older couples it is a perfect song.....after all when you are young and in love this is exactly how you feel and that overwhelms thinking about any of life's trials.
Bland, but well sung melody with good vocals as always for Dan + Shay. Not my favorite song from them by any means but a smart single choice and very nice addition to the sappy wedding songs collection :)

"From The Ground Up" did indeed get hourly treatment from iHeartMedia stations yesterday as it debuts at #50 on the Mediabase rolling chart with 577 spins and over 4.7 million in total audience.

This sounds really nice: harmonies are great, melody is pretty, instrumentation sounds lovely. However, there's something that isn't clicking with me on this one yet. I've only listened twice, so that may change. But right now, I'm not digging this as much as I'd hope to have been. But part of that may just be me being bitter about "What You Do To Me"...

This didn't grab me at all on first listen. The lyrics are fine enough, I suppose, but nothing that really stands out. I agree that they are cliched, and sappy. I was hoping for something more along the lines of "She Is His Only Need" or "You're Gonna Miss This", and it didn't get there for me. I also thought the melody was a bit boring. Hopefully it'll grow on me, but I haven't really been a fan of anything I've heard from them so far, and this hasn't changed that. I expect this to be a pretty big hit for them, though. I know the first day's spins are misleading due to the pre-arranged airplay, but I expect it to take off fairly quickly even beyond the eighth day.

That music video is just fabulous. Really, really strong. I love the song too and I'm totally expecting this to be huge at country radio and be their biggest hit yet.

Sorry for doubling up on posts but "From The Ground Up" is the most added song on Mediabase this week with at least 47 adds.
The official impact day is February 22nd, so I'm thinking this song will get over 100 adds by that date.

So if it debuted at #47 on Mediabase, then that must mean it will debut higher on Billboard right?

Billboard always has higher debuts than Mediabase. It takes a couple weeks for Mediabase's points system to catch up to the audience on Billboard Airplay.

Just got the chance to watch the video and listen to the song now... I quite like it! The lyrics are ok, not amazing, but I like the production and their performance is really good. Really like the video too, it complements the song very well!

Really like the video too, it complements the song very well! This song has great lyrics. I'm surprised you think they are just "ok". I mean, I could do with a little less sugar, but they aren't bad at all... They're a just a bit too "safe" for me. I don't mean that as a terrible thing though, I don't think songwriting need to be necessarily inventive to get a message across. It's just that these lyrics go for the sort of "overly-romantic-fantasy" approach that I've come to expect in country songs tackling this theme, rather than maybe offering a different (more real?) perspective. Anyway, what do I know? This sounds like a hit regardless LOL

Dang, this song is killer. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE. Got a "You're Gonna Miss This" style message. 2016 CMA Single/Song of the Year nominee. Callin' it now. I absolutely LOVE this song as well and hope it achieves GREAT success. However, when I listen to "From The Ground Up" I hear a "Dirt" style message and carbon copy. I love the fact that you brought up "You're Gonna Miss This" because it is an awesome song with similar message, which I hear as well.
